Students Applying to the Sport Management Program
From: The Sport Management Admissions Committee
We are pleased that you are interested in the Sport Management program at Florida State
University. The Department of Sport Management is proud of the program which is recognized for the
quality and preparation of its graduates for positions in the sport industry. Admission to the program is on
a competitive basis; only a select number of students are admitted, and admissions occur one time during
the year. Limiting admissions is one way we continue the high level of quality in all areas of teaching, and
student participation. Please note that admission to Florida State University does not automatically
make a student eligible for admission to the Sport Management program.
Applications submitted by March 2, 2015 will be considered for admission in the Fall 2015 term.
No students are admitted in the Spring or Summer terms. Students transferring to Florida State
University from another institution must first submit an application for admission to the university. Students
with the highest GPA and who have completed the prerequisite coursework will have top priority for
admission. Students otherwise meeting the minimum admission requirements (including a 2.75 or higher
GPA) will be held until the end of the application period. The admissions committee will consider all the
information submitted in making admission decisions. In addition to the GPA and course prerequisite
requirements, the number of students admitted is based on available Departmental resources. In a typical
year 90 students are admitted for the Fall term.
All documents submitted for application to the Sport Management Program for admission for the
Fall 2015 semester must be received by the March 2, 2015 deadline to be considered a complete
application. All elements of the application package will be used in determining whether a student will be
admitted to the program. The GPA will be calculated from the grades earned at the time of application.
Acceptance decisions are contingent upon the student’s GPA at the end of the Spring semester. A student
may be initially accepted if his or her GPA at the time of application is 2.75 or higher. If a student’s
overall GPA falls below 2.75 during or at the conclusion of the Spring semester, the Department reserves
the right to deny admission.
If there are any questions concerning the application process, the requirements, the forms, or the
deadlines, please feel free to call or write:

The Undergraduate Program in
Sport Management
The undergraduate program in Sport Management is designed to provide students with both the
academic foundation necessary to successfully continue on to a graduate degree in Sport Management, or
to take an entry-level position in the sport industry. The program is monitored to ensure the curriculum
aligns with the standards forwarded by the Council on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA).
There are four features of the Florida State University program in Sport Management that are
unique. First, the program is structured as "limited access." Only a restricted number of the best-qualified
students are admitted once a year. The courses in the major are limited in size. Second, students have the
opportunity to obtain valuable job related work experience via a practicum experience. The program
philosophy is based upon a balance between theory and practical application. Students will have
opportunities to apply what they have learned in class to working in various sport organizations. Third, the
courses are arranged into four "blocks.” Students will have the same classmates in all of their “block”
courses. Students have the opportunity to forge personal and professional relationships, which may last
throughout their careers. Because students register in "blocks," there is little difficulty registering for the
required courses. Finally, the course curriculum allows each student the flexibility to select elective courses
that are geared towards a greater understanding of a particular subject area.
