St. Stephen, Deacon & Martyr We are a Stewardship Parish Lord Jesus, walk with us in our suffering and transform our lives. 3rd Sunday of Lent March 8, 2015 Our Parish Mission Liturgy Schedule A Catholic community of faith striving to witness to the Gospel. Our Baptism and Confirmation calls us to bring Christ’s Love to our families, our work places and our community. Grateful for God’s gifts, we seek to nurture those gifts and to give back to the Lord by sharing our time, talent and material treasure. In all of our parish activities we seek to develop a personal relationship with the Lord who directs our lives and a vision that sees the world with the eyes of Christ and that leads to a commitment to justice. E-mail: [email protected] From Our Pastor Dear People of St. Stephen, Congratulations to the young people of our parish who received the sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Wypych this Saturday. Special thanks to Mrs. Pazin, our DRE who coordinated the preparation and celebration, to our religious education staff and the staff at Cardinal Bernardin School who prepared our young people, to our music ministry and all who assisted at the liturgies, to the parents and sponsors who have guided our young people in their growth in faith, and to all who helped to prepare for the celebration. We pray that our young people will continually draw upon the gifts of the Holy Spirit given in this sacrament and will always be committed to living faith in Jesus Christ. I have many emotions as I report to you that Mary Jeanne Pazin, our Director of Religious Education, will begin a well-earned retirement at the end of this school year. I am first of all grateful to Mary Jeanne for the great work that she has done over the years here at St. Stephen. She served two years as our DRE as the parish began, leading our religious education program as we worked out of Andrew High School, and has served as DRE for the past nine years. Mary Jeanne directs a program that provides religious education for nearly 1500 children in grades one through eight and coordinates our sacramental preparation programs, our Family Mass program, our grade level Masses, our Children’s Liturgy of the Word, and our cooperation in religious education with Cardinal Bernardin School. She is a joy to work with for both our staff and the many volunteers needed to run our programs. Our parish has been blessed by her dedicated work - both her creative work and her organizational work - over the years. I am very happy for Mary Jeanne that she will have the opportunity to enjoy more time with her husband, children, and grandchildren. She surely deserves the chance for relaxation and new activities that retirement offers. I and so many others feel a sadness because we will miss her regular presence with us, but we are blessed that she and her husband will continue to be part of St. Stephen as active parishioners. We are planning a retirement celebration for Mary Jeanne near the end of the school year. Details will be forthcoming. We have also formed a search committee and have begun the process of identifying her successor. The first few words of today’s first reading, the presentation of the 10 Commandments in the book of Exodus, proclaim the most basic attitude of people of faith: “I am the Lord your God.” If we accept those words, we accept the foundation of our faith. The first commandment of the 10 Commandments given to Moses, “I am the Lord your God; you shall not have strange gods before me,” and the first of Jesus’ two great commandments, “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength,” are the foundation of our Catholic faith. We proclaim that our God, the God revealed in Jesus, is Lord of all. That may seem basic and obvious. As I grew up, this was the one commandment of the 10 Commandments that I never feared that I would break. There were no “idols” or “pagan gods” on the southwest side of Chicago as there were among the people around the ancient Israelites. As I have grown older, I have come to see this as the core commandment. If I accept God as Lord, the God of all the universe and the one who gave His life for us, that God should be at the center of my life. My choices should always consider the question “what does God want me to do?” The challenge in life today is that, with the hectic pace of life, God can easily slip into the background of our lives. God can easily get lost as people are engaged in all sorts of activities. I hear too often “I believe in God, but I don’t have time for regular worship or prayer.” Any number of things can become the center of our lives – our “idols”, if you will – things that become more important than anything else. The challenge of living the 10 Commandments and Jesus’ Law of Love demands that we keep the Lord central to our lives. We know that Jesus walks with us. He is with us always, no matter what our response to Him. Lent calls us to open our hearts to the Lord and to allow Christ to transform our lives. May this Lent help all of us to affirm Jesus as Lord by the way we live each day. I want to thank the CC Boyle Council of the Knights of Columbus for their generous donation of $1,084 for our religious education efforts for children with special needs. The Tootsie Roll sale that the Knights of Columbus held at our church last August is among the fundraising efforts used by the Knights to support many programs for children with special needs. It is another example of the great work done by the Knights of Columbus. I thank them for their generosity to St. Stephen and for all they do for our communities. Finally, I invite everyone to join us for the St. Joseph day dinner next Saturday evening. It is always a very good dinner at a very reasonable price and a very enjoyable evening for everyone. Thank you to the Men’s Club for their efforts to organize the dinner. May God bless you and your loved ones. Fr. Spiritual Life The Gift of the Kingdom Kingdom Retreat 2015 The Kingdom Weekend is a spiritually uplifting gift you give to yourself. This is a special time when you get to leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life and renew, recharge and strengthen your relationship with our Lord. People just like you will share their faith journeys with the group in an intimate setting. During the weekend you will enjoy fellowship, personal reflection time, prayer services, faith sharing and Mass. There is no pressure on any of the participants to speak. You can share as little or as much as you want during the weekend. Many past participants have come out of the weekend saying that it was life-changing for them. Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22 One of our current team members, Joe Hoffman says, “Need a change? Twenty years ago, my wife Joan came back from a Kingdom Weekend beaming from ear to ear. Curiosity got to me! The following year, I attended the Kingdom Weekend and my life has never been the same since. Do you need a change of some kind? Join us on Saturday, March 21 & Sunday, March 22 and experience your change. Looking forward to seeing you in the Kingdom! My personal story is that I kept putting off going to Kingdom each year because I thought I was always too busy to give up an entire weekend. And was I ever wrong! In 2012, at the last minute, I decided it was time to attend. And that was one of the best decisions of my life. I actually think it was the Holy Spirit who nudged me to make the decision. I was definitely spiritually renewed, exhilarated and reawakened to Christ in my life. Another benefit was the wonderful people I met who are dear friends to this day. I want to personally invite each of you to make this the year you experience that “Kingdom Spirit.” (Barbara Black- Kingdom Weekend Lay Leader ) Praise Band The Praise Band will lead the music at the 11:30 Mass next Sunday, March 15 and the following Sunday , March 22. The Kingdom Retreat is a great way for the adults of our community to renew and strengthen their relationship with God. It also allows you to reflect on your life priorities. You can get to know some fellow St. Stephen members. This retreat gives you time to pray, worship and participate in group activities. The registration fee is $10. There is no set cost for the retreat, but a free-will donation will be asked at the end of the retreat. There are sign up forms in the narthex and in the parish office. Please return the sign up form to the parish office and mark your envelope “Kingdom Retreat”. Over the years the Kingdom Retreat has been a renewing weekend for many parishioners of all ages. It is a special time to reflect, pray and spend time with the Lord. If you have any questions about the Kingdom retreat, please call Fr. Jay or Karen Opyd in the parish office. You arrive at 7:45am on Saturday; the retreat ends mid-afternoon on Sunday. This is not an overnight retreat. Everyone goes home Saturday evening and returns on Sunday morning at 7:30am. Mass is celebrated on Sunday at 1pm with a family dinner following. Kingdom Support Help Needed 2015 Kingdom is quickly approaching and we are in need of a few good hands to help with the support! Time slots for helping: Saturday, March 21 7:00am to 10:00am Noon to 4:00 pm 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm Sunday, March 22 7:00 am to 11:00 am 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm If you are looking for something "extra" to do during Lent -- we can use your help! Our time together will include personal memoir, visuals, music, and conversation. Kirby Education Foundation Cookie Jar Come into the Tinley Park Chipolte on Thursday, March 12 from 5 to 8pm. Bring in this bulletin, show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier to make sure that 50% of the proceeds are to be donated to The Kirby Education Foundation Cookie Jar. The Cookie Jar is a partnership between the community, parent volunteers, and school personnel focused on providing resources and assistance to District families and students in need. Working together, we believe this partnership can eliminate barriers to learning, support students’ physical and emotional well-being, and strengthen academic performance. Parishioners….Thank you for your monthly donation of food to the Pantry over the past year. Your donation is the first step in the process of providing food for the needy people of this community. Thanks for joining us in this effort ! We are truly grateful for your steady support. Food distribution to the needy people of Tinley Park & Orland Hills takes place every Wednesday from 8am to 1:30pm. We currently are serving approximately 65 families per week. As our economy continues to struggle, we see new families every week. Thanks again for remembering us so that we could be partners with you in serving those who are in need. -(Chuck Okresik) DONATE TO S.A.F.E. St. Alexander Parish Hosts “Sacred Cloths” A presentation on the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo on Wednesday, March 11th at 7:00 PM. Faith Based Communications Shroud presentation entitled, "Sacred Cloths" deals with both the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo. It takes the audience through the history of each cloth, the scientific analyses that have been done, current data that refutes the dating of the Shroud. The inability to explain the mechanism by which the image on the Shroud was created is also explored, along with the unique photo-negative and 3D characteristics of the image. Finally, the link between the two cloths having been in contact with the same crucified person, and its implications are examined. Exhibit materials include full size Shroud images (both positive and negative), as well as crown of thorns, crucifixion nails, flagellum (whip), biblical coins. The presentation runs 70-80 minutes. For more information, please contact St. Alexander located at 7025 W. 126th St in Palos Heights, IL 708-448-4861. Polish Ministry Informacje Dotyczące Duszpasterstwa w Parafii Sw. (Wj 20, 5-7). A może stwórzmy nowy slogan: „Chrześcijanin, to brzmi dumnie” – powtarzajmy go, przeplatając z modlitwą o zrozumienie. Panie, pomóż nam zrozumieć Twoje Słowa, Twoje nakazy, abyśmy z łaską Ducha Świętego umieli zrozumieć i przyjąć Twoją Miłość i Dobro, byśmy zawsze podążali drogą Chrystusa.
