MARRIAGES: Couples should make arrangements in person at least one year in advance
for required interview. At least one of the parties must live within the parish boundaries, or
be a registered member of the parish. Please call the Rectory for an appointment. No dates
will be set over the telephone.
BAPTISMS: Prospective parents should telephone the rectory about three months before
the expected birth to discuss the arrangements for your child’s baptism and enroll you in the
required baptismal class. Baptism classes are held monthly on the 1st or 2nd Sunday of the
month. The baptism date will be set at the time of the class. The child’s birth certificate as
well as the godparent’s “sponsor certificate” (godparents must be practicing Catholics) must
be presented before a date is finalized.
PARISH MEMBERSHIP: We welcome all new parishioners! We ask them to register at
the rectory and encourage the use of weekly envelopes. If you are moving, please notify the
rectory.
Women’s Group: - The newly formed Women of Faith Ministry invites all women of the
parish to join us at our upcoming gatherings. Watch the bulletin for further details.
Women’s Bible Sharing: The women of the parish gather for Bible sharing on Monday
mornings, 9:30 through 11:30 in the rectory.

Dear Parishioners and Guests,
Although we no longer purchase animals for sacrifice on the steps of our churches, the temptation to turn faith into profit is
still with us. Today, as in Jesus’ time, there is wealth to be made in religion and spirituality (as we can see from the escapades
of some tele-evangelists). But even for those of us who don’t profit directly from our faith, there is a pull to make it into just
another thing we do every week, instead of a true act of worship. When we come to Mass, we can be distracted by worldly
affairs, more concerned with what is going on in people’s lives, even slipping out early so that we can get on with “real Life.”
In today’s gospel, Jesus is showing us that the time we give to God needs to be given freely and fully – without being compromised by anything else. That is what the commandment, “Keep Holy the Sabbath,” is about. For those of us who grew up with
the Baltimore Catechism, the emphasis was on avoiding “servile” work. But, consider that in the book of Genesis, the seventh
day, God’s rest, is holy because it is part of the fabric of creation; it was the “day” God rested after the work of creation, a
time to admire his work. To take time away from our routines and to draw closer to God and be in touch with his presence that
affects all we do, is holiness itself. In this sense, how can you “keep holy the Lord’s day?” ~ Fr. Jim

BISHOP PEREZ TO VISIT
Bishop Nelson Perez, one of our Auxiliary Bishops
and the Vicar for our area of Long Island, will be visiting St. Margaret on the weekend of March 14/15.
Bishop Perez will have the chance on Saturday to learn about
our ministries and activities through meetings with Staff and
those assisting them. He then will be part of our Saturday/
Sunday Masses. We look forward to welcoming him to our
community.
Catholic Relief Services Collection March 15
Next week, our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services
Collection. This Collection supports six Catholic agencies benefiting millions of vulnerable, displaced, and impoverished families and individuals around the world. From direct humanitarian
service to helping victims of human trafficking and working to
reunify families, the funds from this Collection make a real difference in lives across the globe. How will you help? Next
week, please support The Catholic Relief Services Collection
and Jesus in disguise.

In John’s Gospel, Jesus visited Jerusalem for three Passovers.
Today’s Gospel story takes place during his first visit. Try to
imagine the scene. A young rabbi from distant Galilee is
inspired to make a scene in the courtyard of the Temple that no
one would forget. He tosses over tables with money on them
and overturns and opens cages with animals and birds that get
out. What chaos! But he is not doing this to get attention. He
is doing it because he believes that people have forgotten the
most important part of praying to God. Even though it is
important for Jews and Christians to contribute support to their
places of worship, God wants something that money cannot buy.
God wants our love and trust. This is what the people in the
Temple had forgotten. The authorities don’t understand this and
want to know what gives Him the right to do this. But instead
of giving a clear answer, Jesus makes a mysterious statement
that He will do something impossible: He will rebuild a large
building in three days. It was only after the Resurrection that
His friends realized what He truly meant. His risen Body is
God’s new Temple, filled with life for all.

LENTEN / EASTER ON LINE RETREAT
This Sunday’s Gospel reminds us how easy it is to “do” religious activities, yet forget our
personal relationship with God. Our choices in Lent help us to refocus on that most important area. The internet resource: An Ignatian Prayer Adventure, which you have seen in
these past week’s bulletins is one way to deepen that connection. On our parish website
(www.saintmargaret.com), you see the same logo as you see here. Click on it and you come
to the site. There, in the center column, are the links for the retreat, beginning with assistance (“Before You
Begin”) and offering resources for 8 weeks. YOU choose the number of days, the amount of time and the
place you will use. YOU review the parts of the offerings each week and decide what you can commit yourself
to. This is not a course where you have to get all the work done, and each person can approach it in his/her own
way. What is important is choosing what you will do and staying with that routine during the full time as
best as possible. This is an opportunity to be with the Lord in your own way.
In addition, entirely extra, Fr Jim invites anyone using this experience to come together to talk about our prayer
times. Again, this is not “classwork” or “reports,” but a chance to encourage one another and hear the variety
of the Lord’s work in our lives. Come when you can on Saturday mornings at 9:00am in the Rectory
(Coffee/hot water available).

LITURGICAL MINISTRY TRAINING
Fifty years ago, the Bishops at the Vatican Council called for more active participation on the part of the
congregation at Mass. This was accomplished primarily by having the Mass celebrated in the local language
of the people. But in addition, various ministries were created to allow men and women to use their gifts to
strengthen the parish. Many people over the years responded to the invitation.
Once again, an invitation is being offered.
This April, training sessions for two important ministries are being offered: Lectors and Extraordinary
Ministers of Communion (to serve at Masses & to serve the homebound/in hospitals).
If you are interested, please write a letter to Fr. Jim before March 29th (Palm Sunday), explaining why you
want to share in either or both of these ministries. Emails to [email protected] are welcome, too. If you

There are no fancy plates or silverware. No TV, glassware or seconds. Dinner is far from a joyful
gathering of the family.
In solidarity with these our brothers and sisters in Christ, we invite you to join us the Friday before
Holy Week for a simple meal of a sandwich, a drink and a piece of fruit.
Reservations are necessary (so we can purchase sufficient food) and will close on Monday,
March 23rd. Tickets will be available after Masses on the weekend of March 21st & 22nd.
They may also be purchased in the rectory during regular business hours.

be honored at liturgies on Sunday, April 19th at St. Lawrence the
Martyr in Sayville and on Sunday, April 26th at Maria Regina in
