Paillot: Dum Spiro
Dum spiro spero means "While I breathe, I hope" in Latin and is a modern paraphrase of
ideas that survive in two ancient writers, Theocritus and Cicero. It is a motto of various
places, families, and organizations. This is also the title of this very nice animated short
using Maya created by several students for their graduation project at ESMA
(Montpellier, France).
According to the plot, a legionnaire is summoned to Caesar's tent and given a message
to deliver to the barbarian camp on the other side of some dense woodland. As the
mission is under the white flag of a courier, the legionnaire assumes that this will be a
piece of cake and indeed so it is, until he reaches the forest and finds that it is home to a
group of bears, the matriarch of which does not like to have her home disturbed or
messed up.
Born in 1987, Romain Paillot is a French composer for
Film and Television. Completely self-taught,
he studied the process of composition and film music
inspired by Hollywood Film Composers. He then studied
orchestration by himself, and has since recorded film
music with various orchestras in Europe. He has written
music in multiple genres ranging from symphonic music,
electro and minimalist music. The emotion, melody and
colorful orchestrations are at the core of his music. He
wrote scores for French TV Drama, aired on TF1 and
France 2 channels, as well as documentaries for
Discovery Channel. He is currently working on a FrenchMoroccan feature film called "Achoura,"directed by Talal
Selhami, to be released in theaters at the end of 2015.
He hopes to pursue his career in Los Angeles, the place
to be for a film composer.
