DISCUSSION
This year at the ACTIO, 26 Budokan athletes competed in 42 divisions winning 21 medals:
7 Gold, 7 Silver, 7 Bronze, 7 x 5th/7th/ 9th places
By comparison:
In 2014, 31 athletes competed in 45 divisions winning: 20 medals
8 Gold, 3 Silver, 9 Bronze, 6 x 5th
In 2013, 25 athletes competed in 39 divisions winning: 24 medals
12 Gold, 4 Silver, 8 Bronze, 6 x 5th
In 2012, 22 athletes competed in 30 divisions winning: 18 medals
4 Gold, 7 Silver, 7 Bronze, 5 x 5th places
Medals were awarded in 62% of the 42 divisions contested
73% of our 26 athletes won matches
Matches were won in 67% of divisions contested
Athletes in only 4 divisions lost to opponents who didn’t get to the semi-final meaning they couldn’t contest repechage
matches
56 matches were won out of 106 matches fought or 53% win/loss
Most number of matches was fought by Kiernan Tafft with 11 followed by Conor Edwards (9), Nathan Katz (8) and
Josh Katz (7)
4 athletes contested 3 age categories: Mira Czarnetzki, Liam Stewart, Kiernan Tafft, and Conor Edwards with Mira
medalling in all 3 divisions, and Conor coming in 2nd in Cadets
8 athletes contested 2 age categories: Amber Rudgley, Dakota Hemmings, Lachlan Brothers, Bjorn Tandean, Hussain
Moghadamshaidie, Naomi de Bruine, Josh Katz and Nathan Katz, with Amber, Dakota and Lachlan winning a medal
and Naomi, Josh and Nathan winning medals in both, Nathan winning both Juniors and Senior divisions
The positive trend in the club’s participation at State Open level is encouraging as is the progress of our athletes.
Notably, Cameron Leishman, Kyle McIndoe and Oliver Koraca had entered the competition covering an additional 6
divisions but had to withdraw due to injuries. Also Amber McIndoe and Katelyn Boyd are still recovering from injury
and they would have covered another 5 divisions. This means that we could have quite easily contested 31 athletes in
53 divisions. Last year these athletes won 1 x 2nd, 3 x 3rd and 2 x 5th places, so our medal tally this year could have
potentially also been higher with their participation.
Thanks to Amber McIndoe who since her injury before the Nationals last year has picked up a strong interest in
coaching and who provides valuable support at club training and at competitions. It was also great to see the strong
support from the club over both days, with many athletes who competed on Saturday providing pre-competition
support as training partners for warm-up and then offering positive encouragement during matches. Thanks to Dave
Coleman, Mark Stewart and Marcel de Bruine (and others who I may have missed) for looking after the club’s video
camera during the competition. Thanks to the parents who looked after the coaches over the 2 days and to Pier who
arranged the dinner on Friday night.
A number of our athletes moved up into higher age categories and weight divisions and it is important to be aware that
adapting to the new conditions could understandably take some time. Patience and planning of the priorities in
development are needed to progress.
Whilst not necessarily winning matches, it was really encouraging to see many of our athletes determined to
implement strategies taught at training and positively taking on advice provided by the club’s coaches before and
during matches. This is so important to improve in competition performance. On the flip side, some athletes who won
matches may well have been disappointed in not achieving better results due to one or a combination of a number of
factors, such as loss of focus or intensity, or not sticking to a plan, losing posture, overcooking major attacks, or not
adapting to changed strategies from opponents.
Many athletes continue to show improvement against opponents who have caused them difficulty in the past and again
patience and discipline are needed to close the gap and change the outcome in the future. Plenty of feedback was
provided by club coaches during the day and more will be provided during training. Of particular note, new club
member Mira (transfer not quite through yet), weighing in at a giant 42kg had no one in her Cadet and Junior divisions
so contested heavier divisions and did extremely well in winning Cadets and medalling in Juniors and Seniors. As the
result of Nathan and Josh’s impressive wins in Senior Men, Nathan now tops the National Senior points table at 66kg
and Josh is within 1 point in 60kg.
