Amid scandal,

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez

briefly with his Senate Foreign

and waited to speak.
Sitting before him Wednesday

congressional resolution authorizing the use of force against the

The senator’s major concern in
his questioning was whether any
new resolution would restrict
what the U.S. can do against the
Islamic State and expire after a
certain time.
“What I think Democrats are
not willing to do is to give this or
any other president an open-ended authorization for war, a blank
check,” Menendez (D-N.J.) said in
his opening statement. “This is
the critical question moving
forward.”
Menendez’s participation in
Wednesday’s hearing provided
evidence that he would not sit
quietly in a corner and wait for
the storm clouds hanging over
him to dissipate following reports
last week that the Justice Department would soon indict him.

Plan would phase in mayor, council salary hikes
By Cristina Rojas
Times of Trenton
Amid public criticism over a
plan to raise the Ewing mayor’s
salary by 180 percent and nearly
double the pay for council members, the proposal has been
revised to gradually hike the
salaries over three years.
“We were certainly sensitive to
the concerns expressed by the
public,” Council Vice President
David Schroth said Wednesday.
“We thought many of them raised

very persuasive points. Given the
totality of the situation, we felt
that was appropriate and fair to
the people as well as to the
government.”
The original pay hike ordinance
was up for a vote at Tuesday’s
council meeting, but after hearing
from those opposed to the
increases, the council proposed
the more gradual approach.
The amended ordinance will be
up for a public hearing and vote

The salary of Mayor Bert
Steinmann, who earns $17,850,
would increase proportionally
over the next three years to
$50,000. The initial proposal
called for the raise to be instituted
in full this year, retroactive to Jan.

Similarly, the proposed pay
increases for council would be
gradually increased over three
years, though the amount of the

The council president’s pay would
increase to $13,000 from $7,556;
the vice president’s pay would
increase to $12,500 from $6,296;
and council members’ pay would
increase to $12,000 from $6,296.
Council members said that the
mayor and council had gone too
long without salary increases.
“The role in the council has
expanded in my view,”
