Thee and Me Plainfield Friends Meeting Newsletter 105 S East Street Plainfield, IN 46168 (317) 839-6490 www.PlainfieldFriends.org March 2015 We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on Sunday, April 5 - just a month away! Here are some thoughts about the resurrection from Greg Laurie -------------------------------What the Resurrection Means to Us For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. — 1 Corinthians 15:22 What does the resurrection of Jesus mean to you? What does it mean to me? First, it assures our future resurrection. Because Jesus both died and rose again, we will be raised like Him. 1 Corinthians 15:20 says, "But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep." The word "firstfruits" speaks of a sampling, a foretaste, a glimpse. Jesus is the firstfruit. means, among other things, that God's justice will ultimately prevail. Third, the resurrection of Christ gives us power to live the Christian life (see Romans 8:11). Certainly the Bible does not teach that we will be sinless in this physical body we now live in. On the other hand, we can sin less, not by our own abilities, but by the power of the Spirit. Christ can make us altogether different kinds of people. We must believe that. "Old things have passed away . . . all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).God can give you the power to live this Christian life. -------------------------------Let's live in the resurrection of Jesus Bill _________________________________ Jesus has died and has risen, so we know that our resurrected bodies in some way will resemble His resurrection body. To what extent, we cannot be certain. But if they were completely like His, it would mean that we would be clearly recognizable. Second, the resurrection of Jesus is a proof of future judgment. Now that may not sound all that exciting, but it's something we need to know. We live in a society, and indeed a world, in which justice is often perverted and neglected. We look at things that happen and say, "How can that be? How could that happen?" The second time in June 1969, we had John (6 years) and Mary Jane (20 months) traveling with us. There were many tourists in the Garden Tomb site as well as in the Garden of Gethsemane. Also, there were many chairs set up for worship services held throughout the day. It was crowded and noisy to say the least, with a line waiting to look into the tomb where many Protestants believe Jesus had been buried. I wished then that John and Mary Jane could have experienced the quietness and simplicity that I had felt when Dave and I had visited those same places in June of 1963. At that time, Mildred White (former missionary at Ramallah schools) was visiting and available to show Dave and me some of the Holy Land sites. When we went to the Garden of Gethsemane, a few tourists were quietly reflecting as we walked around, some possibly stopping to pray. I thought about Jesus praying there - Mark 14:36 “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me, nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” And then He went and found the disciples sleeping and said, “Could you not watch one hour. Watch and pray....the spirit is ready, but the flesh is weak.” Then Dave and I went to the Garden Tomb where it was very quiet. After looking into the empty tomb, I turned around and looked out into the beautiful garden. Down at the end near a wall, I saw a gardener working. I thought of Mary Magdalene being there and her thinking Jesus was the gardener when He asked her “Whom are you seeking?” (John 20:15). I began to take out my camera, but when I looked again, the gardener had disappeared. However, to have that “photo in my mind” was really all I needed. I later learned that the gardener was a former Quaker student at the Ramallah Boys School - he passed away about 1965. “I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses; and the voice I hear falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses. And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own, and the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.” C.
