JOB DESCRIPTION
Main purpose of job:
The Great Britain China Centre promotes closer UK-China relations by building trust and understanding through
dialogue and forging partnerships to develop the rule of law, good governance and sustainable development. Our
Project Manager positions, based in London but travelling frequently to China, are responsible for researching,
arranging and delivering projects for GBCC in line with our mission. Our Project Managers are self-starters with the
ability to proceed without close supervision, and to make sound judgements and decisions. You will work closely with
a range of Chinese and UK partners, including government departments, universities and research centres and
NGOs, and will collaborate with a small team working to build legal and judicial cooperation. You will help organise
political and economic dialogues between China and the UK and jointly design and deliver training programmes.
The role requires the ability to acquire detailed knowledge of Chinese policy evolution in legal, judicial and other fields
and to identify practical opportunities to align Chinese priorities with policy initiatives being taken by the UK, the EU
and other international actors.

Duties & responsibilities
 Staying up to date with current events in China, the
UK and EU, in order to identify and research new
project opportunities which link Chinese and UK/EU
policy priorities in fields such as establishing the rule
of law, developing the criminal justice system and
good governance.

Organising UK-China judicial dialogue activities and
study tours for experts from both sides, collaborative
events and judicial training.

Supporting the development of the joint venture
Centre for Common Law at Renmin University Law
School in Beijing, working in partnership with Oxford
University’s Faculty of Law.

Help research new project opportunities that link
Chinese and funder policy priorities, building
Chinese partnerships and bidding consortia and
supporting successful bids for new projects to e.g.
the EU, the FCO and charitable foundations.

Organise political and economic dialogues with
Chinese partners, such as the UK-China Leadership
Forum and UK China Young Leaders Roundtable to
high standards of quality, developing corporate
partnerships, pursuing sponsorship and maintaining
close cooperative relationships based on mutual
respect and common interests.

Help build partnerships with university research
centres, supporting bids for new projects, helping to
organise training programmes and study visits in
both directions.

Manage 1-year or 3-year projects, mostly in China,
to high standards of quality, exercising tight financial
control, managing risks and delivering measurable
results on schedule, reporting to funders and
communicating outcomes.

Help manage GBCC’s important relationships with
the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, other UK
government departments, Parliament and the
Chinese Embassy in London. Assist in outreach,
website development and PR activities, alongside
the everyday running of the office and translating
and interpreting as required.

Develop and nurture close win-win relationships with
key Chinese partners, handling issues of political
sensitivity with care and diplomacy

Working closely with the Finance Manager, prepare
and manage project budgets to comply with
regulations and donor and audit requirements.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a track record of working independently to deliver measurable
results. The posts will suit candidates with experience of living and working in China who are keen to develop their
future careers in an NGO or government relations environment.
The role involves close liaison with British and Chinese government departments and international and Chinese
NGOs, universities and research institutes, as well as contact at senior levels with Chinese and British politicians and
experts including lawyers and senior members of the Judiciary. Mobility is an important requirement of this position
as it involves frequent travel to China and potentially long periods away from home. The successful candidates will be
self-motivated individuals capable of strategic thinking and able to exercise sound judgement in politically sensitive
situations, with good representational skills.
Essential qualifications and skills:
 A university degree in a relevant subject, preferably at masters level or above
 Bilingual or adequate working knowledge of both Mandarin Chinese and English
 Thorough knowledge of and experience of working in China
 At least two years of relevant work experience, and research experience.
 Excellent analytical, communication and representational skills
 Proven cross-cultural teamworking capability
A qualification in law or an applicable social science would be an advantage.
Job type: Short-term contracts of up to 51 weeks.
Salary range: £25,000 a year or higher depending on experience.
