© Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2015 PH124520 The NIPPRIG Collection LIMITED EDITION April 2015 www.IKEA.ca 2 Made by nature, crafted by hand PH124475 This April we’re proud to release the new NIPPRIG collection. Created from renewable natural materials, the collection showcases a creative collaboration between IKEA and local craftspeople in Vietnam and Indonesia. For this press kit, come travel to Vietnam’s Mekong delta to meet some of the makers of NIPPRIG and learn more about the traditional weaving techniques and natural raw materials that help make each product unique. Further in you’ll meet with Nike Karlsson, the IKEA designer who co-created the collection, as well as looking at ways of using the collection in the home too. THE NIPPRIG COLLECTION 3 PH124473 Welcome to the world of NIPPRIG This story starts on the banks of the Mekong River, a couple of hours drive south of Ho Chi Minh City, the capital of Vietnam. This part of the country is dominated by the huge river that the Vietnamese call Đồng bằng Sông Cửu Long - or the river of 9 dragons, named for the way that it splits into 9 large branches on its way to the sea. At the edge of the river in saturated green, grows a lush, leafy plant called the water hyacinth. It grows thickly everywhere, sometimes fenced in by farmers and sometimes floating down the river like green icebergs. The plant itself is a native to South America and a huge problem in South East Asia. Fertile conditions mean it grows acre over acre covering waterways like a suffocating green carpet. The local people have turned this menace into a resource by weaving it into bags, baskets and mats. The skills are old ones for this part of Vietnam, honed by farmers and fisherman over the years to create things to help them carry, cover and keep. THE NIPPRIG COLLECTION 4 PH124509 Amongst the water hyacinth people in wooden canoes pull out the succulent weed. One cuts off the roots and leaves and places them into the canoe, the other bundles the stalks into bunches like sticks of celery. PH124481 On the shore of the river spread out on a small road lined with coconut palms, the water hyacinth stalks are laid out to dry. After about a week in the hot, tropical sun the greenness is bleached away and they become a toasty brown and ready to use. THE NIPPRIG COLLECTION 5 PH124513 In houses next to the small road, neighbours gather together to turn the dried water hyacinth into baskets and mats. Because of the nature of the material the only way to do this is by hand. The material needs the eye and hand of the weaver as they trim off the stalks PH124477 and adjust each piece to fit in the right way. Every now and then there is a “pop!” sound not too dissimilar to popcorn cooking as they push some air out of the stalks. Fast hands flash as the weaving takes shape. THE NIPPRIG COLLECTION 6 PH124514 THE NIPPRIG COLLECTION 7 A natural collaboration PH124497 The NIPPRIG collection represents a creative partnership between IKEA and local producers in Indonesia and Vietnam by blending traditional products with Swedish design and a little IKEA knowhow. For IKEA designer Nike Karlsson one of the best parts of the design process was being on location. “Once you’re in the environment, in the surroundings and around the craftspeople — that’s where I find my inspiration. The local weavers know the different materials and of course they are the ones who are the experts in using it.” Once the products are decided on, work begins. Any language barriers are overcome with a sketchbook and a whole lot of interaction. “Once we start working there’s a lot of back and forth. Sometimes I make a sketch and leave it to work on something else and by the time I’m back it can have this amazing progress, or it might be that I think no, can we change something. Often we find out what the final design should be as the product grows naturally. I have an idea what we want to make, but that idea really develops when we start making it. It’s usually stripping things back, really finding the essence of the product.” Nike Carlsson, designer THE NIPPRIG COLLECTION 8 PH124496 A big part was adapting products so that they could be transported efficiently. Because each product comes fully assembled, the answer lay in stackablility. “The natural materials we used loves bends but not sharp corners, so we decided that it must be stackable. Sometimes we would come up with a design that would be too bulky to be stacked, so we’d re-design it so it could be transported or stored at home.” For Nike the best part of NIPPRIG is the work done on it together with the local makers. “I love that this collection shows off both of our worlds — Swedish design and local craftsmanship. The fact that it’s from renewable materials is even better.” THE NIPPRIG COLLECTION 9 Meet the materials used in NIPPRIG PH124464 Water Hyacinth is a lush green water plant that grows extremely thickly in tropical waterways around the world. Once dried it makes a durable material for weaving. PH124466 The strong fibrous trunks of banana plants are ideal for use in weaving. What’s more, weaving helps use all parts of the plant, which are usually destroyed after the fruit is harvested. PH124465 Seagrass is one of the oldest materials used for weaving in South East Asia. It grows on riverbanks and muddy areas and after drying is a strong and very flexible material. PH124504 Bamboo is one of the world’s fastest growing plants. It’s super strong (with a tensile strength that rivals steel) and for furniture it’s popular not just because of its strength but also the ease at which it can be shaped and formed. PH124467 Rattan is a large family of plants mostly grown in Indonesia and has long been popular for use in furniture making. It’s boiled, then sun dried before being shaped into distinctively curvy furniture. PH124468 Coconut has been used since ancient times for a variety of uses. The leaves, bark and the outer shell of the nut are all used to make everything from rope and baskets to brooms. THE NIPPRIG COLLECTION 10 One plant pot’s journey PH124521 PH124522 From start to finish, The NIPPRIG collection is a celebration of natural materials matched with local craftsmanship. This plant pot for instance uses locally harvested water hyacinth and is made by one craftsperson using traditional hand weaving techniques. Come take a look at its journey. The bottom’s woven first. Using dried water hyacinth and seagrass rope for strength, the weaver begins by using a fishbone weaving technique — for strength and appearance. PH124524 With colours matching other IKEA furniture, the weaver works their way up a frame made from powder-coated steel and seagrass rope. PH124523 Finishing touches at the top are wrapped up and any adjustments are made with a pair of scissors — the only tool used in the whole weaving process. Once the bottom is completed the sides come next. Coloured water hyacinth is woven using a “rice” weaving technique so called because of its similar look to grains of rice laying next to each other. PH124525 Ready to go. Each plant pot is quality checked and varnished for added durability and protection. All that remains is to ship them out.
