Bell’s father had developed “Visible Speech,” a method of teaching the deaf to talk by studying the anatomical position of the speaking organs while making different sounds. Bell’s mother was deaf; however, she was able to become a pianist, a skill she passed on to Alexander. • In his younger years, Bell was educated at home, then attended private and public schools for three years. Even as a youngster, his curious mind was busy with thoughts of inventions. At age 12, while visiting a friend’s family’s grain mill, Bell observed the slow process of husking the wheat grain. Within days he had created a device that combined rotating paddles and sets of nail brushes that dehusked the wheat. He also came up with a talking doll that said, “Mama.” • At age 16, Bell had already accepted a teaching position at the Weston House Academy, teaching elocution and music. The family moved to Canada in 1870 when Bell was 23, and two years later, he moved to Boston to open a school for the dear as well as privately tutor the hearingimpaired. One of his first students was Helen Keller. • Bell spent his evenings working on a device that would transmit the human voice over wires. He hired a skilled electrician Thomas Watson, to help him. When the wealthy father of one of his deaf students heard of the experiments, he offered to financially support Bell’s work. After 2 years of laboring, in 1876, Mr. Watson heard Bell’s voice through the wire in another room in what is considered the first telephone call. At age 29, Bell was issued Patent No. 175,465, for “the method of, and apparatus for, transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically by causing electrical undulations, similar in form to the vibrations of the air accompanying the said vocal or other sound.” •The following year the Bell Telephone Company was created, and Alexander married the deaf daughter of his wealthy patron. Less than nine years later, 150,000 people in the U.S. owned telephones. • In 1915, Bell phoned Watson once again, this time for the first ceremonial transcontinental call. Bell called from New York City and Watson answered in San Francisco. • In addition to the telephone, Bell held 17 other patents, including hydrofoil boats, aerial vehicles, selenium cells, a metal jacket to assist in breathing, a device to locate icebergs, and the audiometer to detect minor hearing problems. He is also credited with the metal detector, an invention he came up with quickly in an attempt to locate a bullet in the body of President James Garfield, after the president was shot by an assassin. • In 1906, this genius with a vision said, “The day will come when the man at the telephone will be able to see the distant person to whom he is speaking.” • Although he was a gifted inventor, throughout his life, Bell always referred to himself as “a teacher of the deaf.” When he passed away in 1922, the entire telephone system was shut down for one minute as a tribute. To get as much nutrition as possible, many of us have turned to dietary herbal supplements. The problem is that we might not be getting what we expect in those pills. Now the New York State attorney general has gone after companies that don’t deliver what they’ve promised. Cease and desist letters have been sent to four major retailers that sell their own store brand of herbal supplements because either the supplements contained none of the promised ingredients or there were contaminants or fillers. According to the attorney general’s website, contaminants and fillers included “rice, beans, pine, citrus, asparagus, primrose, wheat, houseplant, wild carrot and others.” Only 21 percent of supplements tested contained any of the herbs they were supposed to have. At one retailer, a mere 4 percent of tested supplements contained the material shown on the label. The attorney general now has asked for information from all four retailers about the processing of these supplements, as well as quality control. What does this mean for those of us who use herbal supplements to try to increase our nutritional intake or to adjust a medical condition? It means we need to be careful. The more drugs we’re on, the greater the risk of interactions. For those of us with compromised immune systems, the contaminants in supplements can have adverse effects. Before taking any supplements, ask your doctor for a recommendation. Remember: The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t have to approve supplements before they end up on store shelves. While there is sometimes a coordinated effort between a whole alphabet of government agencies, most of the time the VAOIG (Department of Veteran Affairs Office of the Inspector General) is right in there. Here’s a small sample of the crooks who have been nailed recently: ● In San Antonio, a 71-year-old man is going to federal prison and paying back $1.4 million for a whole laundry list of infractions over a five-year period: wire fraud, giving fraudulent info to the VA to get $2 million in work, claiming Page 4 by Freddy Groves his was a Service Disabled Veteran-owned small business and claiming that employees had certain qualifications. ● In Albuquerque, New Mexico, a man was convicted of theft and ordered to repay nearly $180,000 for taking VA money that didn’t belong to him. ● In Newark, New Jersey, a company will repay $1.3 million because of allegations that it overcharged the VA on construction contracts. Additionally, it listed itself as a Service Disabled Veteran-owned company and invoiced as such 68 times. ● In Sacramento, California, recently FORT SMITH 479-646-7369 unearthed wrongdoing resulted in a company handing over $44 million to “settle alleged false billing” allegations. The company handles records management, shredding, storage and more. It reportedly overcharged for services rendered between 2001 and 2014 when it failed to extend lower prices to government customers, as required by its contract. Also, it was alleged that the storage it did provide didn’t meet the requirements for which the government was charged. Two whistleblowers will share an $8 million jackpot for coming forward to expose the fraud. However, Irish Gaelic is listed in the Constitution of Ireland as the national and first official language. About 350,000 claim to be “fluent” in the ancestral Gaelic out of the island’s total population of about 6.5 million, although about 1.7 million say they can “speak it.” Oddly enough, the second most widely-spoken language in Ireland is Polish. • The “Mac” at the beginning of many Irish surnames means “son of,” while “O’” translates “grandson of” in Gaelic. • The Irish flag consists of a stripe each of orange, white, and green. The orange stripe is representative of Irish Protestants, the green for the Irish Catholics, with the white stripe between the two signifying the hope for peace between them. • One might think that Ireland’s national symbol would be the familiar shamrock, but it’s actually the harp, making Ireland the only country with a musical instrument as its national symbol. Dublin’s Trinity College houses the oldest harp known to exist, dating back to at least 1300. • Althone, Ireland is home to the world’s oldest pub, Sean’s Pub, dating back to 900 AD. Built on the banks of the Shannon River by an innkeeper who guided travelers across the river, there are records of every owner since its establishment. During a 1970 renovation, old coins were found within the walls dating back to the ninth century. with Janet B. Carson Courtesy of University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service. Late last summer or early fall you had an article in the paper about an herbicide to broadcast on crab grass. It was supposed to be put out in February. It’s now February and I cannot find the article. Can you tell me what the chemical is? A. Pre-emergent herbicides prevent annual weeds from germinating. Crabgrass is an annual summer weed that begins to germinate when warm weather begins. Applying a weed preventer (not a weed and feed—since you would only be fertilizing winter weeds now) in late February to late-March should help prevent most of them from growing. Let the bitter cold weather pass before you use it. There are numerous choices including: Barricade (prodiamine), Pendulum or Scotts Halts (pendimethaline) and Dimension (dithiodiamine). If you miss applying this, or you have a heavy weed presence, products containing Quinclorac will kill crabgrass during the growing season. Q. Can I thin my crape myrtle now? It’s supposed to get cold again here in Little Rock. And is it time to cut back my Liriope? Thanks! A. We all use the late February dates when talking about pruning roses, cutting back liriope, figs, fruit trees, and other summer blooming plants. Since winter has returned with a vengeance at the end of February, it will not hurt in the least to wait until milder weather returns. The key is to wait until the bulk of winter weather has passed and before new growth is in full swing. Prior to the recent ice/snow/sleet and unseasonably low temperatures, many of our roses, perennials and other plants thought spring was on the horizon and had started to grow. Crape myrtles are usually one of the last plants to break dormancy, so waiting even until mid-March is not going to hurt anything. For the liriope, just pull back the old growth to see how much new growth is emerging so you don’t cut the tips of this year’s foliage Q. Whitney Wiley Our city recently removed the Bradford pear trees that had been planted in sidewalk openings in the downtown area. The trees outgrew the space and damaged store canopies and the fruit made a mess. Do you have any suggestions for good street trees that won’t break up the sidewalk, cause minimal mess and don’t grow so big the damage buildings and store canopies? A. I think many people erroneously thought that Bradford pears were small trees, and they are anything but. They also have a tendency to snap in storms, so it is probably for the best that they were removed. Some good choices include male gingkoes (females have messy, smelly fruit), Chinese pistache, little leaf linden and zelkova. Another new trend is fastigiated trees—or those that grow tall and narrow. Slender silhouette sweetgum (it unfortunately does produce sweetgum balls), and fastigiate European hornbeam, tulip tree, and English oak are just a few of the available choices Q. We have both a dwarf peach and Elberta peach. When is the best time to plant them? We just bought them and they are in the large buckets that they came in and in our garage with florescent lighting A. As soon as the ground is workable, I would plant. Container plants can be planted year-round as long as you can dig in the soil, and the ground is not saturated. I would assume you bought them dormant, and thus could go in the ground outside. You don’t want them in the garage for too long, or they could break dormancy and not be ready for outside conditions. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver ۩ It was a wise man, Will Rogers, who observed, "Half our life is spent trying to find something to do with the time we have rushed through life trying to save." ۩ Cleopatra's husband was her brother, Ptolemy. ۩ Melanie Roberts, a 41-year-old Ohio woman, was forced to have her left leg amputated. Shortly thereafter, while still recovering, she was shocked to receive a $600 bill for the funeral of her leg. Evidently, she was supposed to pay for the limb's burial -- and the bill was even broken down into the separate costs for the plot, the minister, the hearse and the gravediggers. ۩ The name "Alice" means "noble kind"; "Amy" means "beloved"; "Angela" means "messenger of God"; and "Amanda" means "lovable." ۩ During the Muslim feast of Al-Adha, a sheep was to be sacrificed on top of a four-story building in Cairo, Egypt. In a fit of terror or anger, the doomed sheep rushed the executioner, who then lost his balance and fell to his death. ۩ Ever wonder why so many coin banks are shaped like pigs? Here's the story: In ancient times, a lump of clay was called a "pygg." A clay bowl formed from this lump would often be used to hold loose change, and it was called a pygg bowl bank. According to legend, at a later point in history, a potter unfamiliar with the term received an order for several of these pygg bowl banks. Instead of the bowls, he made coin banks shaped like pigs; they became such a hit that they're still around today. ۩ The Puritans wouldn't allow the singing of Christmas carols. ****** Thought for the Day: "'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.' Let’s examine the history of this group and the fascinating woman who founded it. • Juliette “Daisy” Gordon was born into a wealthy Savannah family in 1860 and attended an exclusive boarding school and French finishing school. After her marriage to a very wealthy Englishman, William Low, the couple moved to England. • Daisy had experienced several ear infections prior to her marriage, leaving her nearly deaf in one ear. A fluke accident at her wedding robbed her of the hearing in her other ear. A grain of good-luck rice lodged in her ear and punctured the eardrum, bringing about an infection that completely destroyed her hearing in her good ear. • After several years abroad, Juliette’s marriage ended in divorce, and she returned to the States. Because she had lived such a financially-privileged life, she longed to do something meaningful with her life. In 1911, she met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, after which she determined her course of action. • In 1912, Juliette invited 18 girls to the first meeting of the Girl Scouts, and they embarked on a mission of physical, mental, and spiritual development, along with community service. The girls played sports, went on camping trips, studied the arts, practiced homemaking skills, learned first aid and survival skills, and sold war bonds. By 1920, there were 70,000 Girl Scouts across America. By the end of the 1920s, that number had grown to more (continued on page 8) of Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma March 13, 2015 THE EMERALD ISLE Make sure you have the Education, Coverage, and Support You Need! The city of Dublin has more parks per square mile than any other European capital. Over 97% of the city’s residents live within 330 yards (300 meters) of a park. •The Irish potato famine of the 1840s was the result of blight, a disease that destroyed the leaves and tubers of the plant. Years of unusually cool weather with large amounts of precipitation combined with the water mold Phytophthora infestans caused the potatoes to rot in the field year after year. Nearly half of Ireland’s population depended solely on the potato for food. As a result of the five-year blight, about one million Irish perished from starvation or famine-related diseases. Another estimated two million emigrated away from Ireland, and the island’s population declined by nearly 25% between 1844 and 1851. The population has never returned to prefamine levels. • In 1908, the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast was expanded to accommodate the construction of two massive ocean liners, the Titanic and the Olympic. In April of 1912, the completed Titanic sailed out of Belfast to pick up passengers at ports in England, France, and Ireland for its maiden voyage. The last port of call was Queenstown, Ireland, where hundreds of Irish waited to immigrate to America. Four days later, the ship lay at the bottom of the North Atlantic, having hit an iceberg, 450 miles (725 km) short of their New York City destination. • Ireland did not enter World War II, choosing to remain a neutral country. • Although the name of Patrick is closely associated with the country of Ireland, it’s far from the most popular boy’s name. Jack is the number one name for boys there, with Patrick a distant 19th. • An athlete from Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, has the choice of competing for either Great Britain or Ireland at the Olympic Games. • Ireland’s County Galway is home to some pretty long place names, including Muckanaghederdauhaulia, which means “marsh of the pigs between two seas,” and Carrowkeelanahaglass, meaning “a narrow green marshland by a stream.” The longest is Glassillaunvealnacurra, which translates “little green island of the mouth of the weir.” • Although Guinness is the world’s largest brewer of stout beer, Ireland is not the world’s largest consumer of beer, an honor that belongs to the Czech Republic. (Ireland is down the list at #4.) Brewed in the St. James’ Gate Brewery, Guinness has been in production since 1759.Today, the Guinness Storehouse is Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction. Located in a converted fermentation plant, it has been remodeled into the shape of a giant 7-floor, 14-million pint glass of Guinness. I love going out and throwing the Frisbee for him to catch. I’d like to teach him to do more, but a friend told me Australian Shepherds are just too hyper to train. Is he right? -- Larry C., Omaha, Nebraska Dear LARRY: Australian Shepherds are very active and can get hyper when they don’t get enough exercise. But they’re also extremely smart and very trainable. You have to stay on top of their training though, because an Aussie will look for a loophole at every chance. Moe sounds like a great candidate for agility training. You’ve probably seen it on television: dogs speeding through chutes, weaving around poles and leaping over small obstacles. Learning to handle each obstacle provides both physical and mental stimulation, something that active dogs like shepherds need. Professional trainers who offer agility classes abound in every major city. Shop around and ask your vet or friends about trainers they’d recommend. Meet with trainers in person to make sure you and Moe are comfortable with them. While you’re looking, you can start Moe on the path. Pick up a book on agility training at a bookstore, the library or online. Purchase or build a couple of basic agility obstacles, like a jump bar, a tire or a low table (for pause training), and begin teaching Moe to respond to commands off-leash (in a secure area, of course). Send your questions or comments to [email protected]. During World War II, they planted Victory Gardens. •The tradition of Girl Scout cookies dates back to 1917, just five years after Juliette Low founded the organization. A scout troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked cookies and held a sale in their high school cafeteria as part of a service project. Over the next two decades, Girl Scouts across America held sales of cookies baked by their own troops, packaging them in wax paper, and selling door-to-door for 35 cents a dozen. In 1934, Philadelphia Girl Scouts became the first to sell commercially-baked cookies, and within two years, the national organization licensed the idea. During World War II, when there was a shortage of sugar, flour, and butter, the Girl Scouts sold calendars as their service project. By 1948, 29 commercial bakers were licensed to bake the three varieties – peanut butter sandwich, shortbread, and chocolate mints. Today, cookie sales during the short eightweek time period the Scouts hold their sale are close to $790 million. • A group of 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia, has grown to 3.9 million members worldwide today.
