The Great War, as it was called at the time, was fought on every ocean and nearly every continent, although most of the fighting took place in Europe. It began in the summer of 1914 when a Serbian national assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. One month later, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Because of treaties that had been signed, binding countries to come to each other’s aid in time of war, countries began choosing sides. The Ottoman Empire (Turkey) and Germany signed a treaty within just five days of the declaration of war against Serbia. • President Woodrow Wilson the United States neutral in 1914. He held with this decision even after 128 Americans were killed when a German submarine sank the British passenger ship, the Lusitania, in May, 1915. Throughout Wilson’s campaign for his second term, his slogan was, “He kept us out of war.” However, in 1917, when German U-boats sank three U.S. merchant ships, just one month after Wilson’s victory, the U.S. declared war against Germany. turn to page 5 for more! Noteworthy Inventors: THE BISSELLS There aren’t too many folks who haven’t heard of Bissell carpet care products, but how much do you know about the inventors? This week, Tidbits focuses on Melville and Anna Bissell, the people who brought us the carpet sweeper. •Anna Sutherland was a 19-year-old schoolteacher when she married Melville Bissell and moved to Michigan. They opened a crockery and china business together in Grand Rapids in 1871. She found it very frustrating that all the dust from their business settled in the carpets and it was impossible to remove it from the fibers with a broom. The dust was also contributing to Melville’s health problems. He began working on a device that would sweep it all away! • Melville Bissell’s carpet sweeper utilized rubber wheels whose back-and-forth motion drove a set of bristles, which in turn agitated the dirt and swept it inside. He received a patent for his sweeper in 1876. When friends began asking where they could purchase the contraption, Bissell moved away from crockery and toward the large potential market of the sweeper. • The Bissells hired women neighbors, who worked out of their homes in Grand Rapids to tie bundles of hog bristles with string. The bunches were then dipped in hot pitch and inserted into brush rollers and trimmed. Anna made the rounds of the homes, collecting the pieces in a clothes basket, returning to the Bissell shop to assemble the sweepers. • Once production was underway, Melville hit the road to peddle his new product, knocking on doors and calling on houseware stores. • During his demonstrations, Melville tossed a handful of dirt onto the carpet and quickly swept it up with his newfangled gadget. The price was $1.50 and the sweepers sold like hotcakes. Anna took a trip to Philadelphia and persuaded John Wanamaker, owner of that city’s first department store, to take on the carpet sweeper. •In 1883, the Bissells built their first manufacturing plant in Grand Rapids. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the factory the following year. Anna quickly secured loans from local banks which enabled the Bissells to begin manufacturing just 20 days after the fire. • More tragedy struck in 1889 when Melville passed away at age 45. Although she was raising their five children, Anna quickly stepped up to lead the company, becoming the first female CEO in America. She expanded the business internationally, and within a few years, the factory was producing 1,000 sweepers daily. Even Queen Victoria of England was a fan, demanding that the castle be “Bisselled” on a weekly basis. • Anna was responsible for introducing progressive labor practices such as workmen’s comp and pension plans to her company. She became a civic leader, opening the Bissell House, a refuge for youth and immigrants. • Anna Bissell held the reins of the company for more than 30 years before she passed the baton to her son, Melville, Jr., who pushed the company toward the new era of the vacuum cleaner and rug shampooer. Even today, Bissell remains a family-owned company. In the midst of all the world’s technological advances, the original carpet sweeper remains virtually unchanged. At the time, they claimed that only 12 minutes a day allowed the brain to heal. Other researchers soon began their own investigations. In 2009, UCLA researchers discovered that certain areas of the brain are larger and have more gray matter in people who meditate. Two years later those same researchers learned that in people who meditate, the connections between areas in the brain are stronger and have less of the brain atrophy that usually comes with age. In this case, the connections weren’t just between specific parts of the brain, but in the whole brain. Whether the meditation caused brain growth or stopped the reduction wasn’t known at the time. A year later, scientists learned that the brains of those who meditate have “gyrification,” allowing the brain to process information faster. Additionally it appeared that the more years of meditation, the more gyrification was present. The UCLA researchers are back. Their updated research indicates that meditation might slow the loss of gray matter in the brain. While they expected some small amount of effect, they were surprised at the “widespread effect of meditation ... throughout the entire brain.” What does this mean for us? That we should seriously consider meditation as part of our daily routine to possibly hold off age-related brain changes. Meditation can be learned, and so it’s best to start with a bit of instruction. If your senior center doesn’t offer classes, go online and research “learn meditation” to help you get started. You also might find ongoing classes in your area, and it’s possible that they will be free. NUGGET OF KNOWLEDGE The Six-Day War was fought between June 5 and June 10, 1967, and was Israel’s response to an accumulation of Arab forces along its borders. Initiated by Israel’s Defense Minister General Moshe Dayan, attacks were launched simultaneously against Egypt , Syria, and Jordan. In six days, Israel was decisively the winner, taking control of the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. Nicknamed “The Red Baron,” this German officially shot down 80 enemy aircraft in 20 months of combat. This included 21 planes in just one month, April, 1917. His plane was shot down near Amiens, France, in April, 1918, and the 25-year-old Richthofen perished in the crash. • America’s “Ace of Aces” was Eddie Rickenbacker, a man with a colorful history. At age 24, he was a daring race car driver, setting a world speed record of 134 mph (216 km/hr) at Daytona in 1914. He didn’t even have his first ride in an airplane until 1916. Although he had a lifelong fear of heights, he had a desire to fly. Flight training required a college degree and a maximum age of 25. Claiming to be 25, he applied for training, and after just 17 days as a student pilot, he graduated and was made a lieutenant in the 94th Aero Squadron. (Answer on Page 6) with Janet B. Carson Courtesy of University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service. A couple of years ago, I put quite a lot of work into starting an iris bed. The iris I planted originally came from my mother, so for sentimental reasons, I would like for them to do well. I have nutsedge that has taken over the bed and I am not sure what to do. I have considered digging the bulbs up and starting over, but I bet I won’t be able to prevent moving the grass also. I wonder if the grass seeds or whatever it is were in the some soil I bought and put in the bed. Help! Weeds, grass especially, has long been a problem in iris beds since we don’t mulch the rhizomes and exposed soil tends to be a breeding ground for weeds. Bermuda grass is often the main culprit, and we have grassspecific herbicides that can kill the grass, and not damage the iris. That being said, if you do have nutsedge, that isn’t a grass but a sedge, and the grass herbicides don’t work. Nutsedge or nutgrass, is one of the most difficult weeds to eradicate. It comes back from seed as well as from a small nutlet or bulb-like structure underground and it is quite tenacious. I would suggest digging up your iris and cleaning off the rhizomes (the bulb like structure) and then replant for a A. season in another bed while you eradicate the weeds using a hoe, Roundup, and soil solarization. Then replant back in the bed in late July. Having just moved to Hot Springs Village from Texas, I asked my neighbor why there weren’t any pecan trees around here. He said the soil was not right for them, that pecans need more clay, not the rocky soil we have here. This seems kind of strange, since Hickory trees, a relative of pecans, are thick as ticks on a hound around here. Are there any varieties of pecan that would grow well here? There are pecan trees all over Arkansas, and we have numerous commercial producers as well. For home gardens, I usually recommend pecan trees as a shade tree, since they get so large and are not easy for a home gardener to spray to keep away insects and diseases. Here is a link to our fact sheet on pecan production for Arkansas It lists many varieties and gives some pointers on growing them. http://uaex. edu/publications/PDF/FSA-6110.pdf I had an inexperienced yard guy last year. Before I knew it he had “weed- Q. A. Q. Whitney Wiley eated” the bark off my very young dogwood, red maple and golden raintree. They look pretty bad at this time and I’m wondering will I lose these trees or is there something I can do to help them heal. Unfortunately, trees don’t heal like humans. Once wounded, the wound is always there, it just depends on how deep it was and how well it is callousing over. If the trees were damaged completely around the trunk of the tree, chances for success are even more limited, as this can girdle the tree, cutting off the supply of food and water to the top of the tree. Dogwoods in particular are not very forgiving when it comes to trunk damage. I would assess the damage. Clean up the wound and see if you see the rounded bark like growth around the wound itself—this is the callous that covers up damage. If the area is large, decay can set in and compound the problem. If the damage is severe, you have two options. One is to cut them back beneath the wound and regrow it into a tree, but an easier option would be to buy some new trees. A. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver ۩ It was American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox who made the following sage observation: "To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men." ۩ During the Victorian era, a well-dressed gentleman was never outdoors without a hat, and most had different hats for different occasions. Of course, the cost of such haberdashery could mount significantly, so one enterprising British soul registered a design (which was much less expensive than registering a patent) for a "duplex hat" -- an elaborate contraption that, by means of hidden springs, could convert from a top hat to a bowler hat to suit the circumstances. ۩ Before you ink yourself, you might want to consider this: The cost of removing an unwanted tattoo can be up to 10 times as much as it cost to get the tattoo in the first place. ۩ If you're like the average American parent, your kids get $3.40 from the tooth fairy for each tooth lost. ۩ You've doubtless heard of peak oil -- that theoretical point at which the global production of oil reaches its maximum output, after which production gradually declines decline -- but what about peak poultry? Those who study such things say that the world hit its peak production of chicken for human consumption in 2006. ۩ The first canned meat product, known as Hormel Spiced Ham, was developed in 1937. Several imitators followed, and the executives at the Hormel Company, concerned about the new competition, decided to have a competition to rename the product. The winner, Broadway actor Kenneth Daigneau (and brother to the company's vice president), won $100 for the winning entry: Spam. ****** Thought for the Day: "A good speech should be like a woman's skirt: long enough to cover the subject and short enough to create interest." — Winston Churchill (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc. March is National Caffeine Awareness Month, so Tidbits is spotlighting this well-known substance and its characteristics. • Caffeine is a naturally-occurring stimulant found in the leaves, beans, or fruits of more than 60 different types of plants across the globe, including the coffee plant, tea bush, kola nut, and guarana berries. Caffeine is also produced synthetically and added to many products. • Everyone knows that caffeine can give you a temporary boost during the day, fighting off drowsiness, boosting energy, and improving mental alertness. It does this by stimulating the central nervous system, the heart, muscles, and controllers of blood pressure. Caffeine is completely absorbed by the small intestine within 30 to 45 minutes after consumption. It is then distributed throughout the body’s tissues. The greatest blood concentration is reached within one to two hours, and its effects diminish in three to five hours. This isn’t true of all folks, since body weight and frequency of consumption can affect absorption. Those who don’t consume caffeine regularly are more sensitive to its effects. • Besides improving alertness, caffeine is also used to treat asthma, low blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes. For some suffering from migraines, combining caffeine with aspirin or acetaminophen has proven beneficial. In fact, caffeine can improve the effectiveness of a painkiller by 40%, and can help the body absorb the medication more quickly. Caffeine is even added to creams applied to skin, which can reduce the itching and redness associated with (continued on page 8) of Western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma February 20, 2015 Make sure you have the Education, Coverage, and Support You Need! After the war, he was General Motor’s head of sales for Cadillac and LaSalle automobiles. He purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1927 and operated that for 15 years. In 1933, he became the general manager of Eastern Airlines, and later became part owner and president of the company. • The top Canadian flying ace of the war, credited with 72 “kills” was Ontario-born hero Billy Bishop, who downed 67 of that total in just six months. • Because of the late entry into World War I, the United States only experienced 53,402 battle deaths. The estimated death toll for all countries involved topped 8.5 million. The Spanish flu was responsible for about one-third of the total military deaths. • Thirty different poisonous gases were used during World War I, with France the first country to employ gas against enemy troops. The French fired tear gas grenades on the Germans early in the war in August, 1914, and the Germans followed up the following April with poisonous chlorine gas. It wasn’t until 1918 that gas masks with respirators were used as protection. Many countries signed treaties at the end of the war outlawing chemical weapons. • World War I came to an end on November 11, 1918, when Germany accepted the settlement terms. More than 65 million men from 30 countries had fought in the war. November 11 was declared a holiday known as Armistice Day, which today Americans call Veterans Day and Canadians call Remembrance Day. • World War II was history’s deadliest war, with an estimate of 50 million to 72 million deaths, up to 3.1% of the world’s population. The Axis Powers consisted of Germany, Japan, and Italy, along with Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, and Slovakia. Their enemy, the Allied Forces, was made up of the U.S., Great Britain, China, and the Soviet Union. About 70 million people fought in the armed forces of the Allied and Axis nations. The total civilian casualties from bombing raids, massacres, starvations, and death camps will never be known. • In September, 1939, Germany invaded Poland, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, and France, all of which fell to Germany. Only the United Kingdom remained to oppose them. • The 41-day Battle of the Bulge in December, 1944 and January, 1945 took place in the Ardennes Forest in Belgium, France, and Luxembourg, and was Germany’s attempt to split the Allied armies. About 610,000 American forces were involved in the battle, with nearly 100,000 killed or wounded. It remains the deadliest battle U.S. Army troops ever fought. • Over 16.1 million U.S. troops served in World War II, with total deaths over 405,000. Of the total number of Soviet males born in 1923, only 20% survived World War II. (continued on Back Cover) Steve’s Yard Care Let Us Convince Your Yard That You Care! The 23-year-old Bronte told him that he would find her “romantic and eccentric,” and not practical enough to be a clergyman’s wife. Her novel “Jane Eyre” was published eight years later. ۩ On March 3, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signs a bill creating the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands. Known as the Freedmen’s Bureau, this federal agency oversaw the transition of blacks from slavery to freedom. ۩ On March 4, 1888, Knute Rockne is born in Voss, Norway. He would go on to become one of the most successful coaches in the history of college football, leading Notre Dame during its golden era in the 1920s. Rockne won three undisputed national championships with the Fighting Irish. ۩ On March 7, 1938, Janet Guthrie, the first woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500 races, is born in Iowa. In 1976, she was the first woman to compete in a NASCAR Winston Cup superspeedway race. ۩ On March 6, 1945, members of the Dutch resistance attempting to hijack a food truck unwittingly ambush German Lt. Gen. Hanns Rauter, head of the Nazi SS in Holland. In retaliation, the SS put to death 263 Dutch. Rauter later was executed for war crimes. ۩ On March 2, 1978, in a famous case of bodysnatching, two men steal the corpse of film actor Sir Charles Chaplin from a cemetery in Switzerland. After a five-week investigation, police arrested two auto mechanics, who led them to ChaplinÕs body. ۩ On March 8, 1982, the United States issues a public statement accusing the Soviet Union of using poison gas and chemical weapons against rebel forces in Afghanistan. Evidence to support these charges was largely anecdotal. Some critics charged that the accusations were a smokescreen behind which the United States could go forward in upgrading its own chemical weapons arsenal. © 2009 King Features Synd., Inc. Puppies! It makes me feel guilty that I can’t just adopt a dog and care for it. Should I really feel this bad? -- Harry in Trenton, New Jersey Dear HARRY: I think you’re taking a very responsible attitude toward pet ownership. Instead of running out and getting a dog, you sat back and asked yourself if you could afford it. And that’s important, along with questions like, do you have the time to spend with a dog, is your family or roommate in agreement about owning a pet, and are you allowed to keep one in your apartment. But you can help make the world a better place even if you aren’t able to keep a pet. I encourage you to contact a local shelter to see if it accepts volunteers. Many need unpaid volunteers to help with a variety of tasks, from paperwork to cleaning cages and play areas. Some have enough people on site to handle all the work, so don’t be too disappointed if you’re not needed. Look for other opportunities instead. Sign up for classes that train you how to care for pets in a shelter. Research pet charities, and give a small percentage of your paycheck to one. Or, if you can’t spare even a couple of dollars a month, become a fundraiser ... from phone campaigns to waggy walks, you can help a pet-care organization raise thousands of dollars. Cash is what many shelters desperately need to keep caring for abandoned pets. Send your questions or comments to [email protected]. Readers whose questions are published in the print edition will receive a free copy of my booklet, "Fighting Fleas," also available as a Kindle download. Please support these Animal Rescue Facilities. Give them a call and ask them what they need -- money, pet food, volunteers, labor, etc. Kiah. a beautiful 5 year old Husky/ Shepherd mix. Research also indicates that caffeine can offer a fair amount of protection against Parkinson’s Disease, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. •It’s estimated that 90% of North Americans consume caffeine on a daily basis, averaging about 280 mg/day. A low to moderate intake is between 130 mg. and 300 mg. per day. An 8-oz. cup of coffee varies from about 95 mg. to 200 mg. per cup, depending on type of coffee and brewing time. It would seem to make sense that dark roast coffees would be higher in caffeine, but they actually have less than lighter roasts. Because the process of roasting burns off caffeine, dark roast has a lower content because of a longer roasting time. • The average cup of black tea contains between 40 and 120 mg. of caffeine, with green tea totaling 60 mg., depending on how long the bag is steeped. •In the soda department, Pepsi and Coke deliver around 35 mg. of caffeine in a 12-oz. serving, while Mountain Dew has 54 mg. and Barq’s root beer has 22 mg. The energy drink Red Bull contains 80 mg. and the 16 oz. Monster Energy drink packs a punch of 160 mg. • While most folks can handle the caffeine in 2 to 4 cups of coffee, too much can cause headaches or dizziness, abnormal heart rhythms, dehydration, insomnia, irritability, and the jitters. There have been instances of an overload of caffeine resulting in death. The amount necessary to be fatal would be equal to about 80 to 100 cups of coffee, but is more likely the result of caffeine pills or powder.
