BALLPOINT PENS • The word "pen" comes from the Latin word "pinna" meaning feather, because the first pens were quill pens made from feathers. • When people wrote with quill pens, it was customary to carry a small knife in order to cut new pens— called a penknife. • Today ballpoint ink is dye dissolved in vegetable oils and/or castor oil. • When the first ballpoint pens went on sale on in 1945 at Gimbels in New York City, 5,000 people jammed the store to get a chance to buy one for $12.50 which was equal to a day's pay. Fifty extra police officers were called and 47 people fainted in the crush. 10,000 pens were sold in six hours, and an average of 6,000 pens were sold daily for four months after that. This in spite of the fact that the pens did not work very well. • A good pen can write 50 thousand words before running out of ink. • Every second, about 125 ballpoint pens are sold around the world. • Bic owns one-third of the ballpoint market in the U.S. • In 95% of cases, if a person is given a new pen, the first word that they write will be their name. turn to page 5 for more! Talihina, OK t wi • On January 8, 1889, the first tabulating machine was patented by Herman Hollerith. The invention heralded the modern era of machine data processing. • Born in Buffalo, NY, Hollerith received a Ph.D. in engineering from Columbia University in 1890, and taught mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before going to work for the Census Bureau. • Hollerith's job with the Census Bureau involved compiling statistics. Back then, it took 8 years to tabulate the census information— and the census was taken once every 10 years. Hollerith knew there must be a better way. He worked on the problem even after leaving the Census Office for a better job with an engineering firm. • Then one day he took a train trip. The railroad had been plagued with robbers who posed as passengers. To help catch them, the engineers kept track of everybody on board. They had a card for every person on board, and would punch holes in it to record descriptions of the passengers: punch here for light hair; there for dark hair. Punch out A, B, or C for blue eyes, brown eyes, or green eyes. Punch this corner for short people, or that corner for tall people. This gave Hollerith an idea. • Several weeks later his invention was ready: an electric tabulator. Wherever there was a hole in a card, an electrical connection would be made and a counter would register it. • He subsequently set up the Tabulating Machine Company and began to improve the design of an automatic card-feed system, a keypunch, and punch cards, which formed the foundation of the modern information processing industry. • Hollerith fought an uphill battle to get the notice he deserved. For three years he tried unsuccessfully to get financial backing and corporate interest. Finally, he asked Boston city officials to let him tabulate the town's death records. In just a few days, he tabulated data that would have kept many clerks busy for weeks. People were finally impressed, and the Army hired him to tabulate some statistics. Next he took his invention to the Paris Exposition, where he won a gold medal. • Then he applied for the job of tabulating the 1890 census. The Bureau of the Census set up a competition between all people who were interested in the contract. Herman and his electric tabulator were finished before the others were half through. He got the job. When the census was taken, it took Herman and 30 electric tabulators only six weeks to compile most of the information that had previously required eight years to accomplish. • His tabulator machines rapidly spread across the world. Countries around the world used them for their census taking, and insurance companies used them as well. Even today, his method of keeping track of information is used everywhere extensively. • In 1910, Hollerith sold his Tabulating Machine Company for a few million dollars, but he never liked the new president. In fact, he refused to buy any stock in the company. Perhaps he came to regret that, for if Herman Hollerith had invested $200,000 in that business in 1910, it would have been worth about a billion dollars by 1970. The new owners changed the name of the company and eventually became one of the world's largest corporations, selling computer hardware and software. Can you name the company? Researchers at Harvard University did a review of the literature, meaning they went back through past studies to see if there were any patterns. They screened more than 1,400 studies and winnowed them down to 32. These were examined further to answer the questions: Does yoga help heart health? Is it as good as walking for exercise? The answers: yes and maybe, although more trials need to be run. There were improvements in cholesterol, weight and blood pressure, all indicators for cardiovascular risk. One complication in the research is that there are different types of yoga, each with its own focus or purpose. The one thing any yoga can do is calm the nervous system and reduce stress, and that contributes to heart health. (It cautions, however, that it shouldn’t be counted in the 150 minutes of weekly aerobic activity it recommends.) Yoga classes can be expensive. Your best bet is to check the local senior center, and if it doesn’t have any classes, encourage the center to start some: maybe one focusing on flexibility and strength, and another on stretching and relaxation, and designed for seniors. Check with a cardiac rehab center for suggestions on yoga classes. Any yoga class you take should be designed for beginners. Ask your doctor before you start yoga, or any other program, to make sure it’s right for you, especially if you have cardiovascular risk factors NUGGET OF KNOWLEDGE In China, factory workers and office personnel alike regularly take a nap after lunch. Article 49 of the Chinese constitution maintains that “the working population has a right to rest.” Many Japanese companies provide employees with quiet, darkened relaxation rooms. A French expert named Pierre Fluchaire maintains that, “It is a huge mistake to go sixteen hours without sleeping. Nothing is so civilized as a siesta.” He feels that American businesses could improve productivity by encouraging a little napping now and then. You remember boot camp ... and what it was like to finally be finished. So far, the non-profit organization has sent nearly 17,000 packages to graduates of Navy and Marine Corps boot camps, and it will bring the Air Force and Army into the fold in 2015. I know the holidays have many of us spread a little thin, but I’m asking you to open your wallets and send some money to Operation Gratitude, which gets no handouts from the government, not even the Post Office. Every single staple was made by hand and inscribed with his insignia. • George McGill patented the modern stapler in 1866, but his contraption weighed 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg) and was not very portable. Each staple had to be inserted individually. McGill showcased his invention at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. • McGill's design was improved in 1905, but the stapler had to be smacked with a mallet to secure the staple because the staples were connected to each other with a thin bit of metal. • At first the stapler was such a rare contraption that firms would buy a single stapler and the entire company had to share it. • In the 1920s Swingline invented a stapler that used a row of staplers that were connected by glue instead of by metal. This made stapling easy and quick, and mallets were no longer required. • The world’s most expensive stapler was an antique Remington model manufactured in 1919. It sold for $760 on eBay. (Answer on Page 6) with Janet B. Carson Courtesy of University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service. I had several beautiful amaryllis plants over the holidays. Now that they are done blooming, what do I do with the bulbs so they will bloom again. After bloom, cut off the bloom stalk, but leave the foliage in-tact. Allow it to get as much sunlight as possible and water as needed. When spring arrives (if it ever does!) move the plant outside. You can plant the bulb in the ground or grow it in a container outside. Give it full morning sun and afternoon shade—that will help you keep it watered. Fertilize monthly until September. At that point, you have two options. One is to leave it planted in the ground and mulch heavily after a frost, or bring the bulb inside, stop watering and allow the foliage to die down. Once dormant, ignore it for a while. The amaryllis bulb has a mind of its own and will start growing when it is good and ready. When you see a sprout beginning in the center of the bulb, increase sunlight and water. You should see a flower in 6-8 weeks. Then you repeat the process. . My triple-bloom amaryllis fell over during the night and broke the flower stalk off. Is the bulb reusable? If so, what is needed? A. Q. A. This is not an unusual occurrence on amaryllis. The flowers are large and come with three to five blooms per stalk, so the plants are often top-heavy and fall over if left unsupported. Cut off the flower stalk and use it as a cut flower. The foliage should be emerging, and you may even be lucky and have another flower spike. Let the foliage grow. Give it a sunny window and regular water. Once spring arrives, move it outdoors, fertilize every month or two through August, then let the foliage die back and start the cycle over again next fall/winter. The bulb should not be damaged, just the flower stalk. Next time, be sure to turn it periodically to keep it from leaning, and consider weighting the pot a bit to keep it stable, or provide staking. Last year, I purchased a rosemary bush in the shape of a Christmas tree over the holidays. After the holidays, I planted it in a planter and put it by my front door (outside) in a sunny location. The tag said it could stay outdoors to 10 degrees. It died soon after I moved it outdoors. I did not leave it out in temperatures below 20 degrees so I am disappointed that I may have killed it. I have seen them in stores now, and Q. Whitney Wiley would love to try again. Any advice would be appreciated. Rosemary is quite winter hardy in most parts of Arkansas. There is a bit of difference in varietal hardiness, but if the tag said hardy to 10 degrees F, I think you had a hardy variety. If you do choose to buy one this year, don’t leave it indoors at all. That is probably what killed it. They do not take indoor conditions well. I would suggest planting the rosemary in the ground or in a large container. If the plant is in a quart sized pot, the root system is going to get much colder than it would like. Giving the plant more soil volume can also help protect the root system, and make it easier to keep watered. I have a question about limelight hydrangeas. I’ve read that they can take full sun, but does that apply even here in Little Rock? Believe it or not, but yes. The paniculata hydrangeas will tolerate full sun. Limelight is a tough performer in full sun to partial shade and gets quite large. The beauty of these hydrangeas is that even if they get winter damaged, they still bloom, since they bloom on the new growth. A. Q. A. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver ۩ It was feminist and social activist Gloria Steinem who made the following sage observation: "Logic is in the eye of the logician." ۩ Some historians claim that Moses had a stutter. ۩ If you're like the average American, your vocabulary consists of roughly 45,000 words. ۩ Despite the sound of the word, those who suffer from amusia do not have any impairment of their sense of humor; rather, they're tone deaf -medically unable to hear or accurately reproduce relative pitch. ۩ When the wildly successful 1965 film "The Sound of Music" was released in South Korea, one theater owner felt that the movie was too long. He took it upon himself to remedy the situation -- by cutting out all the musical numbers. ۩ If you're planning a trip to the Canadian province of New Brunswick, you might want to include a stop to see the Reversing Falls of St. John. While the St. John River flows into the Bay of Fundy at low tide, high tide in the bay is so extreme that it causes the water to reverse itself and flow from the bay back into the river. ۩ It's been reported that famed chef Julia Child loved to eat corn chips with peanut butter. ۩ You might be surprised to learn that out of the 362 episodes of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" that were produced over the course of a decade, Hitchcock himself directed only 20. ۩ Those who study such things say that the fastest-growing sport among high-school students in Minnesota is trap shooting ****** Thought for the Day: "These are bagpipes. I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. He was interested in computers from the moment they began appearing. At 15 he disassembled and reassembled an Apple II computer for fun. • While attending the University of Texas, he started his own computer company out of his dorm room, calling it PCs Limited. With a thousand dollars start-up capital, he began manufacturing his own kind of computer with the revolutionary idea that he could sell them directly to the customers instead of going through a third party. This kept his prices much lower than his competitors and also kept him in close contact with consumers. •At 19, Michael quit college to run his computer company, re-naming the company after himself. By 1992 his firm was listed on the Fortune 500 list of the largest companies in the world, making him the youngest CEO ever to head a Fortune 500 company. •Today his company is the most profitable PC manufacturer in the world, and he ranks high on the “Forbes” list of America’s richest people. The company is based in Texas and employs nearly 83,000 people worldwide. What’s Michael’s last name, now carried on personal computers worldwide? PENCILS • When an oak tree tipped over in Cumbria, England, in the mid-1500s, a deposit of extremely pure graphite was discovered underneath it. Graphite is a form of carbon. Other graphite deposits are soft, but this deposit was solid. Bits could be sawn off into sticks. The locals used these sticks for marking sheep. Today it remains the only graphite deposit found in solid form. • Because solid graphite had never been heard of, people mistook it for a form of lead, giving us what we now call "pencil lead" even though pencils have no lead in them. • The news of these writing sticks spread around the world, and England held a monopoly on pencils for centuries. • The first pencils made from these graphite sticks were wrapped in string or leather. Around 1560, an Italian couple invented the prototype for the modernday pencil by encasing a stick of graphite inside a hollowed-out stick of wood. This prevented the pencil lead from breaking and prevented the black carbon from rubbing off on the fingers. Later, this method was improved by splitting a stick in half, hollowing out the center, inserting the graphite, and then gluing the two halves of the stick together. This is how pencils are still made today. • During the Napoleonic wars, England refused to export any graphite to France, and Napoleon was desperate for pencils. In 1795, officer Nicholas Jacques Conte ground soft graphite into powder, mixed it with clay, pressed it into sticks, and baked them in a kiln. The success of this formula broke the English monopoly on pencils because soft graphite is widely available. The recipe Conte concocted is used by pencil manufacturers today. PENCIL FACTS • 14 billion pencils are manufactured each year. • A tree can make around 300,000 pencils. • Hexagonal pencils outsell round by 10 to 1. • You can make pencil marks permanent by washing them in skimmed milk. • Carpenters' pencils are rectangular so they don't roll away during work. • John Steinbeck is said to have used more than 300 pencils to write his novel "East of Eden." • During World War II rotary pencil sharpeners were outlawed in Britain because they wasted so much scarce graphite and wood, so pencils had to be sharpened with knives. She was fine, then she took short and deep breaths, and wouldn’t eat or come out of her igloo. A couple hours later we found her passed away, lying on her side. We don’t understand what happened. Unfortunately it was Sunday, and we have no small-animal vet in our town. Just curious if you have any idea what may have happened. -- Diana, via email Dear DIANA: I’m sorry to hear about the death of your pet. Sadly, guinea pigs can fall victim to a number of different illnesses, and can do so shockingly fast. Sometimes, they show few to no outward symptoms. Respiratory illnesses, especially pneumonia, strike guinea pigs hard. Adenovirus, an illness that doesn’t always directly cause death, can lead to pneumonia as the guinea pig’s immune system weakens. Guinea pigs also can suffer a stroke or heart attack at any age, often for no apparent reason. When a guinea pig (or hamster, or other pet rodent) begins to show signs of distress -- such as weight loss (more than 2 ounces is cause for an immediate vet visit), hiding away in her igloo or refusing to eat -- getting help quickly is important, and that means getting your pet to the vet within hours or even minutes to give it the best chance. In this case, a veterinarian wasn’t available right away.
