STILL SPEAKING NEWS & IDEAS 1 Still Speaking News & Ideas March/April 2015 WWW.PEACEUNITED.ORG PALM SUNDAY: A SACRED CONVERSATION ON RACE SUNDAY, MARCH 29 This year’s Palm Sunday Celebration includes a very timely conversation on race and racism in our community and world. In lieu of a sermon, lay leaders will facilitate small group discussions around urgent questions like: “What does racism look like to you?” and “How does race affect you in everyday living?” We’re grateful to Robert and Jimi Valiente-Neighbours, Dru Glover, David Lo, Allison Purdie, Beverly Brook, Jay Thomas and Peter Klotz-Chamberlin—who have inspired and imagined this important Sunday worship event. Peace United’s “Sacred Conversation on Race” is part of the United Church of Christ’s nationwide project promoting congregational discussion and action around racism in our communities. EASTER 2015: RISING AGAIN! EASTER SUNDAY: SUNDAY, APRIL 5! 7 am: SUNRISE WORSHIP & BAPTISM @ BEACH Join us at Almar & West Cliff as we celebrate the resurrection and rejoice in the baptism of adults. Lori Rivera and Art Alm join Dave Grishaw-Jones in leading worship! 8 am: EASTER BREAKFAST A yummy fundraiser for all ages…hosted and prepared by Peace United’s amazing youth groups. 10:30 am: EASTER WORSHIP & CELEBRATION Join us in the sanctuary for a lively, spirited celebration of the Power that heals and restores! Rise up and celebrate God’s love! 12:30 pm: EASTER EGG HUNT 3.15 STILL SPEAKING NEWS & IDEAS HOLY WEEK @ PEACE 2 NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR MISSION, SERVICE & DISCIPLESHIP WINGS TEAM WITH HOMELESS FAMILIES: The Stations of the Cross: A Community Art Expression Once again, our Worship & Arts team has organized Peace United’s friends and artists in creating a “Stations of the Cross” art exhibit for Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Beginning Thursday (April 2), you’ll find the sanctuary full of unique artistic expression, fourteen stations telling the story of Jesus’ journey to the cross. Come on Thursday, Friday or Saturday; spend some time with the art and in your own reflection on the path we follow. We give thanks for the many artists among us and their courage in bearing witness to the deep faith/struggle in their souls. Maundy Thursday: April 2 7:30 pm ~ The Last Supper: Love in Action Our Maundy Thursday worship invites our mindful reflection on Jesus’ last night in Jerusalem: his sharing of a meal with friends and his daring decision to wash their feet. We gather in the sanctuary to recall these things and to re-enact the washing of feet in our own simple service. Join us for a stirring reminder of the power of love and Jesus’ example. Good Friday: April 3 7:30 pm ~ Jesus on the Cross: Lamentation Gathered around the cross, we recall Jesus’ suffering and grieve for all the suffering we and others meet in the world. This powerful service includes a ritual of lamentation in which we articulate our grief and struggle together for understanding and compassion. Join us in the sanctuary for an evening of power and prayer. Holy Saturday: April 4 7:30 pm ~ Movie and Discussion: “Son of Man” Following up on our Palm Sunday “Sacred Conversation on Race,” all are invited to a special screening of “Son of Man”—a provocative re-telling of Jesus’ story through eyes of Africans struggling with oppression, racism and bigotry. Robert and Jimi Valiente-Neighbours will lead a discussion of the movie, following our viewing. And we hope this will extend and deepen our church-wide conversation around race and racism. Both the viewing and discussion take place in the sanctuary. We’re delighted to announce the formation of a new PEACE UNITED MINISTRY TEAM—one that will support families and social workers at the Rebele Family Shelter here in Santa Cruz. The idea is to create a Peace United team to work collaboratively and supportively with case workers and their client families: helping with occasional tasks, networking, and assisting with the search for affordable long-term housing. A one-time training is planned for Saturday, March 14, here at Peace United. Interested? Be in touch with Jim Young at 345-1699. CARING & VISITATION TEAM: This team is looking to grow and involve new members and friends! We gather monthly (the third Tuesday morning at 9:30) to compare notes, reflect spiritually and support one another. You’re welcome to meet with us on Tuesday, March 17 at 9:30 am.
