From the Pastor’s Desk...
We are now past the halfway point of
Lent. How are your Lenten practices going?
Did you know it’s not too late to start? Indeed,
the message of today’s liturgy is just that–––
the captives of Babylon are released, and God
so loves the world that He gave His only Son. If God’s loves
is so great, it’s even enough for those of us who got a late
start on Lent. It’s never too late to turn to the Lord.
Though this Sunday is nicknamed Lætare (Latin for
rejoice) the first reading doesn’t begin very joyfully: All the
princes of Judah, the priests and the people added infidelity to
infidelity, practicing all the abominations of the nations and
polluting the Lord’s temple...They mocked the messengers of
God, despised His warnings and scoffed at His prophets, until
the anger of the Lord against His people was so inflamed that
there was no remedy (2 Chronicles 36: 14, 16). Destruction of
city and temple follow, mass execution, exile. But then, when
least expected, through the least likely person (a pagan king)
God renews the covenant.
That ancient example of unmerited mercy prompts Saint
Paul to rejoice that God, Who is rich in mercy, even when we
were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life in Christ.
But Saint Paul cautions, this is not from you; it is a gift of
God...so no one may boast. Nor may we judge! A difficult
lesson for our judgmental hearts. Yet Saint Paul repeats
twice, by grace you have been saved. Thus, we are (God’s)
handiwork–––every one of us!
Rejoice indeed! God so loved the world He gave His only
Son, that everyone who believes in (Jesus)...might have
eternal life. This Good News gets even better: For God did
not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that
the world might be saved through Him. Imagine the rejoicing
in our little corner of the world, if we, loved and forgiven
sinners, went forth from this assembly as ambassadors of
God’s universal and unconditional love in Christ.

The Annunciation of the Lord - Solemn High Mass
Next week we will take up the collection for Aid to the Church
in Central & Eastern Europe and Russia. This collection
supports Catholic organizations that provide shelter and
training to seminarians in a region that still struggles from the
effects of Soviet rule. By providing pastoral care, catechesis,
and funding for building renovations, your donations help to
restore the Church and build the future while also supporting
our Archdiocese’s mission in Magadan, Russia.
Celebrate the Annunciation of the Lord with a Dominican Rite
Solemn High Mass at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25.
Living Stations of the Cross
Living Stations of the Cross from our Spanish community will
take place on Friday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m., following the
weekly soup supper. There will be translations in English.

Sr. Nancy Murray, an Adrian Dominican and sister of actor Bill
Murray, will present a one-woman show of the life of St.
Catherine of Siena on Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the

“Feeding the Hungry” is this month’s theme. It fits well with the
tradition of the preparation of food altars in honor of St.
Joseph. During the month of March, in addition to hosting a
food altar for the Solemnity of St. Joseph, we are coordinating
volunteers to serve dinner at the Brother Francis shelter each
night (except Fridays). More information is available at the
Parish Office. Please consider partaking in this service as part
of your Lenten journey. Notice that for the month of March the
Holy Family statue will be receiving your food donations for
the food pantry. St. Joseph’s Table will be set up next
weekend for the food for St. Francis House.

Dear Friends in Christ:
Next weekend we will be holding the Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe and
Russia special collection. This initiative helps the developing Church in 28 countries while also
directly supporting our mission parish in Magadan, Russia.
With this annual collection, we show solidarity with Catholics living in Russian and former
Eastern Bloc countries who are still recovering after decades of Communist persecution.
Proceeds from this collection help to train seminarians, restore churches, and pass on the faith to
the next generation. As evidenced by the recent violence in the Ukraine, this part of the world
still desperately needs your assistance to keep the Church’s light of hope alive.
Our Archdiocese’s mission parish, the Church of the Nativity, in Magadan, Russia also relies on
your support to continue its many ministries, such as life-centered counseling for expectant
mothers and outreach to traumatized survivors of brutal Soviet-era work camps.
When this mission first started in the early 1990’s, there were few Christians in Magadan and
virtually no Catholics. Now, the Church of the Nativity is a vibrant cultural center for the
community and continues to grow rapidly. With that growth, comes the necessity to expand
programs and meet the needs of a population hit hard by the recent economic turmoil in Russia.
The Church in Europe and Russia still faces many challenges. Please prayerfully consider giving
to the collection next weekend and help support missions and the people they serve to spread the
healing message of Jesus Christ.
Sincerely yours in Christ and Mary,
†Roger L. Schwietz, OMI
Archbishop of Anchorage
