INTRODUCTION
The Nuclear Institute for Agriculture and
Biology (NIAB), Faisalabad an establishment of
Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), is
primarily involved in goal oriented biological and
agricultural research. NIAB is well equipped and has a
staff of 71 scientists, 48 of them holding Ph.D. degrees
in various disciplines of science. NIAB also maintains
a close liaison with other establishments of PAEC and
various institutions involved in R & D activities at
home and abroad.
In Pakistan, much of the breeding efforts
have been made on cash crops that’s why a huge
amount of foreign exchange is spent on the import of
vegetable seed every year. Hybrids as compared to
open pollinated varieties have 3-4 times higher yield,
more uniformity and resistant to biotic and abiotic
stresses. However, before initiating hybrid breeding,
versatile genetic resources, know how about
hybridization techniques to transfer the traits of
interest, qualified and well equipped trained manpower
have vital importance. In the recent past, the area of
indoor grown vegetables has been increased rapidly in
small holding areas of Pakistan. Severe winter allows
use of plastic tunnels for early vegetable production
that also offers several advantages like protection of
the crop from frost, hails and 30-40 days early
maturity of the crops compared to their normal season.
This technology is gaining a big leap forward where
low temperature during winter season is a severe
problem for cultivation of tomatoes. This technology
gives a premium price of the produce to farmers as
well.
Since 2003, NIAB has started breeding
programme on the development of tomato hybrid
varieties suitable for open field and tunnel farming.
Research work has resulted into the outcome of
number of high yielding and disease resistant hybrids
and lines being tested at country level. Fertile and
sterile seed parent based hybridization techniques and
off-season production systems are being successfully
used to develop tomato hybrids and varieties.
Utilizing the expertise and the facilities
available at the Institute, NIAB is organizing a training
program on “hybrid seed and off-season tomato
production” in which students, teachers and
researchers from private and public sectors can
participate. This three-day training course is designed
to acquaint the participants with theoretical and
practical aspects of hybrid breeding and off-season
tomato production which will definitely lead to
develop technical manpower and wide spread use of
tunnel farming to boost micro and macro economy of
the vegetable growers in the country.
