NCJW/Essex Launches Impact Finance
A Steppingstone to Success
his spring NCJW/Essex
is piloting a new
program designed to
support income-generating
ideas to help women get on
their feet and take the next
steps to success. Impact
Finance will advance small loans to women
looking to improve their economic and
personal stability.
Loans of up to $1000 will be awarded
to women who are on a path to
income growth through employment,
entrepreneurial ventures or professional
certification programs. The program is
by referral only through the NCJW/Essex
Center for Women and other partner
agencies.
“Impact Finance is an opportunity for
NCJW/Essex to engage in a form of social
investing,” explains Lila Bernstein, chair of
the Impact Finance Committee. “We have
undertaken an exciting mission to help fill
a need in our community that has been
made more acute by the current economic
climate. Assisting women to achieve
some measure of economic and personal
stability is a tangible and direct way to
deliver societal change.”
Loans through Impact Finance carry no
interest but have the expectation of
repayment. Trained volunteers serve as
loan officers and provide a continuing oneon-one relationship to help women set up
a payment schedule and utilize the funds in
the most effective manner.

the means to pursue,” says

nature can have a lasting impact, boosting

Message from the President
A
s I am writing this message, there is snow on the
ground and the winds are howling just outside my
door. By the time you read these words, spring will
be in the air and Pesach just around the corner.
As the seasons change, I hope you will find the NCJW/Essex
calendar refreshing! It is jam-packed with something for
everyone – a day at the 9/11 Museum, a Golf Invitational, a
Mitzvah-in-a-Minute project, a Card and Mah Jongg Party, Women’s Workshops
and our Installation of officers. But there is one event in particular that I’d like to
encourage you to mark on your calendar.
On the evening of April 30th, NCJW/Essex is hosting a Dessert and Dialogue
with nationally renowned speaker Lauren Hersh. Lauren is the Director of AntiTrafficking and Advocacy at Sanctuary for Families, New York’s leading service
provider and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking and
related forms of gender violence. As one of the country’s foremost experts on
human trafficking, she was recently featured in the excellent PBS documentary,
“A Path Appears.” This evening with Lauren is our first program in support of
EXODUS, NCJW’s Anti-Sex Trafficking initiative.
For more than one hundred years, NCJW/Essex has worked tirelessly for social
justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by
safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. Right now our energies are truly
needed to help combat the extensive – and under-recognized – trafficking
happening in the United States and in our own backyards. Raising awareness
through events like our upcoming Dessert and Dialogue is only a first step, but a
necessary one.
Through the efforts of NCJW/Essex and the work of our partners in the NJ
Coalition Against Human Trafficking, you can expect to hear more about the fight
against human trafficking. If you’d like to be a part of that burgeoning effort, I look
forward to hearing from you at [email protected]. We’d love to have
you on board.

ince 1999, Diane Beni of
Maplewood, NJ, has contributed
countless hours and talents to
NCJW/Essex, most notably for the
Teen Dating Abuse Project (TDA).
Passionate about working to prevent
domestic violence and seeing young
audiences as the place to start, Diane
serves as a presenter and trainer for
TDA and has also served as chair of the
committee. She was recently instrumental in developing a video
for TDA entitled, “Crossing the Line.”
s a relatively new face to NCJW/Essex,
Paula Green of South Orange, NJ, is
proof positive that you can work full time
and integrate meaningful volunteer activities
into your life. It wasn’t long ago that a friend
introduced her to the Back 2 School Store
and after several years of involvement,
including co-chairing the Child Recruitment
Committee, she has emerged as a leader for
the event, serving as co-chair in 2014 and again this year.
Her leadership doesn’t stop there. In addition to working on
such projects as Moving Forward, Mitzvah-in-a-Minute and the
Investment Sub-Committee, Paula serves as Recording Secretary
for the NCJW/Essex Executive Committee and Section Board.
Paula accomplishes all of this while working full time managing her
husband’s busy pulmonary medicine practice in West Orange.
It is Diane’s broad spectrum of activities as a volunteer that
has earned her the Service to Section Award. In addition to
TDA, Diane has been on the House Tour and Nominating
Committees, served as chair of Volunteer Recognition during
the Centennial Celebration, co-chaired Installation last year
and is currently co-chairing the Golf Invitational and the day at
the 9/11 Memorial.
“I am excited about being involved and staying involved,” said
Paula. “At NCJW there is a genuine desire to work together to
improve the lives of women and their families. What I’ve learned
is that changing just one life can impact many lives. It pays itself
forward.”
“I am honored to be recognized with this award,” said Diane. “I
volunteer for NCJW because I believe in its mission and goals. I
love the work and the women are truly wonderful.”
Phoebe Pollinger Hannah G. Solomon Award
A
mong her many interests, Phoebe
Pollinger of Montclair, NJ, is an avid
lover of the arts and an outspoken voice
for reproductive justice. At NCJW/Essex
she has channeled her passions and
made a difference on a community level,
earning her the distinction of the Hannah
G. Solomon Award.
Phoebe first joined NCJW/Essex in 1996
to work on the Focus on Art Show, and
then extended her work in community
arts by serving as President of Studio Montclair and a founding
chair of the Montclair Arts Council. Since then she has taken
a leading role in grant writing for NCJW/Essex and the Back
2 School Store, served on the Advocacy, Personnel Practices
and Project Evaluation Committees, and was vice chair of the
Nominating Committee. Advocating for reproductive justice,
Phoebe served on the board of the Planned Parenthood Action
Fund of NJ and chaired two important community events for
NCJW/Essex: Roe at Risk in 2014 and Roe & Religion in 2015.
“Throughout my professional career on Wall Street, I supported
the advancement of women in our collective efforts to overcome
the discrimination we consistently faced,” remarked Phoebe. “In
my retirement, both NCJW and other community organizations
have afforded me more opportunities to work for what I believe
in - women’s equality and the value of the arts. How lucky can
you get?!”

Security Code Advocacy In Action
Israel Granting Program
NCJW/Essex sponsored “Roe & Religion” in January as the nation noted the 42nd
anniversary of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision ensuring a woman’s right to a safe and
legal abortion. A panel of religious leaders had a lively discussion about the ways in
which moral decisions are made within each religion represented and how the decision
in Roe v. Wade is supported by religious tenets and not in opposition to them.
The program was co-sponsored by many community organizations.
NCJW/Essex has designated its giving to the Israel Granting
Program to support a special project of the NCJW Research
Institute for Innovation in Education: Training Bedouin Women
for the Workforce as Educators in the Pre-School Sector. This
unique project empowers Bedouin mothers who wish to work
outside the home by training them for paraprofessional work
and placement in the early childhood education sector in their
communities. The Israel Granting Program is designed to address
the critical challenges facing women in Israel today and emphasizes
empowerment and leadership programs for women and girls as
well as gender equality.

Dianne Chirls, Israel Affairs Chair
NCJW has been working
with Atzum, the Taskforce on
Human Trafficking in Israel, to
advocate for more stringent
laws regarding sex trafficking. A
bill was introduced recently by
MK Zehava Galon which would
criminalize the act of trafficking
in Israel. The following scenario
provides a glimpse into the world
of a victim of sex trafficking:
Marika left the Ukraine planning to work in Tel Aviv as a waitress.
Though she had heard stories of girls being trafficked and sold into
prostitution, she believed she was safe because she had arranged
the job through a recruitment agency which even planned her
travel route: she would fly from Kiev to Vienna, change planes and
fly to Cyprus where she would board another plane for Cairo.
Once in Egypt she would be driven to Tel Aviv.
She knew something was wrong when she landed in Egypt and a
Russian man met her at the airport. He led her to a car where
three other frightened women were sitting. The driver dropped
the women off at a village where Bedouin guides ordered them to
start walking across the Sinai Desert. They walked for two days.
After being smuggled into Israel, Marika was purchased by a pimp
for $10,000 and told that she would be his property until she
worked off a $20,000 debt. She began working off that debt that
evening.
Fortunately, international trafficking into Israel has been almost
completely eradicated, and stories like Marika’s are rare, but
traffickers have turned inward now, looking for vulnerable Israeli
women and girls. Watch for an update in a future Eye on Israel
column on the results of the bill to criminalize human trafficking.

Bistak, DMH, Executive Director of the
Human Subjects Protection Program at
Rutgers University.
The story of Henrietta Lacks, a poor young
black woman who was diagnosed with cervical
cancer in 1951 at John Hopkins Hospital and whose cells were
used without her knowledge to develop the first immortal cell
line known as HeLa cells, was chronicled in the award winning
book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Our
speaker will discuss the ethical issues involved in the use of tissue
taken from patients during diagnostic procedures. She will also
explore legal, regulatory and social safeguards that exist today to
protect patients’ rights, and whether such safeguards prevent rights
violations akin to those experienced by the Lacks family.

Professional Networking
Event a Huge Success
T
he Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex Center for Women, in
association with Comcast Spotlight, held an inspiring professional
networking event in December hosted by the DCH Professional
Women’s Association at DCH Auto Group in Maplewood. A panel
of professional women discussed their individual career paths
and strategies for balancing work with family and personal needs.
Attendees had an opportunity to practice networking skills, brush
up on fashion trends with a representative from Bloomingdale’s and
win fabulous door prizes. The event offered women an opportunity
to network and become informed about career opportunities with
Comcast Spotlight as well as improve their skills in making good first
impressions in the business world.

It was informative and provided food for thought.”
Consultant Anne Wargo (standing) stressed the importance of planning,
preparation and practice in helping attendees develop their plan for success at the
NCJW/Essex Center for Women networking event.
A group of dedicated volunteers participated in the NCJW/Essex Mitzvah-in-a-Minute Holiday Shop and Wrap to help brighten the holidays for children in need. All gifts were delivered to
children in the foster care system. Mitzvah-in-a-Minute is sponsored by a generous gift to the
Legacy for the Future Endowment Fund by Ruthann and Herb Fish.

he 7th Annual NCJW/Essex Back 2 School Store (B2SS) is
only a few months away! On August 2, 2015, more than 675
economically disadvantaged children will proudly walk
through the doors of the one-day-only store that NCJW/Essex
sets up just for them. The children are identified and invited
through 32 local social service agencies.
Experience the joy of helping a child
at the Back 2 School Store!
With the help of volunteer “personal shoppers,” the children “shop”
at no cost to them for brand new clothes, school supplies
and personal care items to help them start
the school year off on the right foot.
All volunteer registration is online. All volunteers must be
NCJW/Essex members in order to participate.
Volunteers on Sunday, August 2nd must be 17 years of age or older.
Teenagers may accompany an adult to volunteer during set-up
(July 27, 28, 29) and take-down (August 3, 4, 5).

Creative Hands
Creative Hands is a needlework program
where members knit and crochet
everything – sweaters, hats, booties,
afghans and baby sets – that are then
donated to nursing homes, hospitals,
homeless shelters, women’s shelters
and children’s clinics. We are always
looking for new volunteers. We meet
on the first Wednesday of every month
from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at the NCJW/
Essex office. NCJW/Essex provides yarn
and instructions, however donations of
usable yarn, especially baby yarn, and clear
heavy plastic bags (the ones that sheets,
comforters and curtains come in) are
always greatly appreciated.

There’s no shortage of news these days
and the residents at Jewish Federation
Housing in South Orange and West
Orange look forward each week to a
lively discussion of current events with
two facilitators from NCJW/Essex. If
you like engaging with senior adults, this
is a hands-on volunteer opportunity
to generate discussion on topics such
as politics, elections, world affairs, the
economy or the breaking news of the
day. Our facilitators work in pairs and
receive on-the-job training, tips on
current events resources and support as
needed. All that’s required is an interest
in current events and an open mind!
If you want to enrich the life of senior
citizens – and be enriched in return
– this is an ideal volunteer opportunity

Empty Bowls No More
Are you looking for a community service
project that fits into your schedule?
Come join the Empty Bowls No More
Committee. The committee is responsible
for collecting and delivering nonperishable food items, which are then
donated to Christine’s Kitchen in West
Orange. This committee is growing and
we are looking for new members.
Mitzvah-in-a-Minute
Baby Bundles!
Calling all kids! Join us on Sunday,
April 12, 2015 from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
at Temple Emanu-El of West Essex in
Livingston for Baby Bundles, a community
service project for the children and
grandchildren of NCJW/Essex members.
Children (five years old and older) along
with an accompanied adult will help bundle
diapers, socks, blankets and other baby
items that will be donated to new parents
in need at Clara Maass Medical Center in
Belleville.
Teen Dating Abuse
Assistant Facilitator
Teen Dating Abuse (TDA) volunteers
are a dynamic group of people who have
been trained to go into the high schools
in Essex County to make students aware
of the warning signs of abuse in teen
relationships, how to recognize them,
safely end the relationship and learn about
healthy relationships.
Two volunteers, one Presenter and one
Assistant, are needed for each class.
Training to become an Assistant is held
at different times during the year at
the NCJW/Essex offices in Livingston.
A preliminary interview and NCJW
membership are required to participate.

Women’s Workshop
Assistants
The Linda & Rudy Slucker NCJW/Essex
Center for Women is looking for
volunteers to be workshop assistants on
various evenings from 6:45 pm to 9:00 pm
for our Women’s Workshops. We also
need assistants for workshops held in
the mornings and afternoons. Ensure
smooth functioning of events by accepting
payments, taking attendance, introducing
speakers and greeting participants.
Training will be provided.
Volunteer Spotlight - Donna Grunstein
Donna Grunstein of North Caldwell, NJ, will tell you
that she is a more well-rounded individual because of her
25 years of volunteering at the NCJW/Essex Center for
Women.
Committed and dependable, Donna spent two days a
week in the early days of the Center for Women, and
now continues to volunteer one day a week. “I don’t get a
paycheck but I get payback,” says Donna, reflecting on how
she has broadened her horizons by interacting with women
whose paths may otherwise have never crossed with hers.
“Each day I volunteer I leave with a deep feeling of having
helped women in the community through NCJW.”
Outside of volunteering, Donna pursues her flair for clothing design, having created
a huge collection of haute couture fashions since 1990. A former dancer, she enjoys
keeping fit by working out with her self-created “Donna’s Dance Walk” to oldies music.
But each day that she works at the Center for Women, whether it is reaching out
to women to remind them of workshops or fielding calls for programs offered at the
Center, she gives a bit of herself to help another and gets a little something in return. “I
smile more, I cry more, I love more,” she says. “For this I thank NCJW for giving me a
very full life.”

the Legacy for the Future Endowment Fund
are recognized in relevant NCJW/Essex
promotional and educational materials. As

contribution of $10,000, payable over
