Grief and Joy in Social Justice
When Amy Goodman tells stories on DemocracyNow.org, she loves to quote
numbers. She had particular passion this week to report that maybe as many
as 80,000 people crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to commemorate
the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. If she had known, she probably would
have loved to talk about the hundreds who marched in downtown Greenville
on Saturday, including at least 33 of our members. Other numbers I ask you to
think about today are the 372 members on our membership book, the dozens
among our numbers who have long histories of social action, the few among us
who feel guilt at not having done more, and finally the one who is reading this.
Ultimately each of us are on an individual journey, sometimes comforting the
afflicted, other times afflicting the comfortable. Take a deep breath. Smile. So
far, you have done the best you could.

The Myth of Powerlessness
Pat Jobe/Walter Ezell (John Seitz)
Anne Wilson Schaef, a nationally recognized voice for feminism and
recovery from addiction, says the central cultural myth in America is
powerlessness. We fear failure, like safety, and hover by our television sets
fearing to take on the powers that be. We are far more powerful than we
imagine.
Getting to Know You!
Please join us after service for coffee, snacks, and fellowship in the
Fellowship Hall at the opposite end of the building from the Sanctuary (on
the same floor); all are welcome. We look forward to getting to know you
better, even if you think we already know you pretty well.

CALL FOR PERFORMERS
The annual GUUF Talent/No Talent Show will start at 6:00
pm on April 18th in the Fellowship Hall. The Ways and
Means Committee is looking for talent, or no talent, from
the GUUF members, friends and the extended GUUF community! Indicate
your interest in participating by emailing Jan Price at
[email protected] as soon as you can! Spots on the program are
limited and are filing up fast, so respond now to let us know you're
interested in performing. The deadline to let us know you’re interested in
performing is March 18th --or until spots on the program are filled,
whichever comes first!
Early indications are that it's going to be a terrific evening. There will be
singing, dramatic performances, beautiful piano music, and lots of fun!
Tickets for the event will be $10 at the door! So mark your calendar and
plan to attend!
HOW TO RECOGNIZE A VISITOR
Do you want to say a friendly “hello” to one of our visitors, but
you didn’t get a good look at them during the service? Maybe
you can’t discern between someone you haven’t had the opportunity to
meet yet and a visitor. Never fear, the green mugs are here!
The Membership Committee has purchased lime green coffee mugs for
visitors to use in the Fellowship Hall after Sunday services. When you see
folks with green mugs, please introduce yourself and make them feel
welcome. We want our visitors to stick out so that we can, in the words of
our illustrious Pat Jobe, “slather them with affection.” Well, perhaps we
can’t get away with quite the slathering that Pat can, but we’ll make a
valiant effort!
Look for a high-topped table in the Fellowship Hall containing a large
“Welcome Visitors” sign, the green coffee mugs, The Flame, and literature
about Unitarian Universalism. The table will be manned after the service by
one of our Membership Committee volunteers.
Visitors – Please look for the high- topped table and use these green mugs
for several visits so we have the opportunity to get to know you!
MEMBERSHIP SUNDAY
Membership Sunday takes place on the first Sunday of
every odd-numbered month immediately following the
service. Anyone wishing to join the Fellowship is invited to
meet in the choir room where you will “sign the
book,” and we will share stories of our spiritual
journeys. You will also be provided with a
packet of information about the Fellowship at
that time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate
to contact one of our Membership Co-Chairs, Debbie
Plonkey at (864) 322-5174 or Liz McGrory – (410) 9246245.
There are seven principles which Unitarian
Universalist congregations affirm and promote:

Justice, equity and compassion in human relations
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to
spiritual growth in our congregations
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
The right of conscience and the use of the
democratic process within our congregations and in
society at large
The goal of world community with peace, liberty,
and justice for all
Respect for the interdependent web of all existence
of which we are a part
GREENVILLE UU FELLOWSHIP
ANNUAL BUDGET DRIVE 2015-2016
THE MISSION OF THE GREENVILLE UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST
FELLOWSHIP is to be a welcoming and accepting liberal religious community,
to embrace freedom of thought, encourage spiritual growth, and practice
social responsibility. The Greenville Unitarian Universalist Fellowship welcomes
seekers to give voice to a faith that is rational, responsible and relevant to our
real lives. We aspire to be a community where reason and love unite in service
to the spirit of life. Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, you are
welcome here.
To kick off our next budget drive, ask yourselves:
 When you were looking for a place to belong, what would have
happened had the Fellowship not been here?
 When you were lost and looking for a home, what would have
happened had the Fellowship not been here?
 When you were new to the area, how many friends would you have
made had the Fellowship not been here?
Would Gil Rowland ever have imagined that our Fellowship would flourish to
the congregation of today? We may have started small, but look at us now!
Imagine, if you will, what would happen if there were no financial
commitments to the Fellowship. If people like you had not made the financial
commitment to make sure that our Fellowship kept growing, we wouldn’t be
where we are today. This year, make that COMMITMENT! Make a
COMMITMENT that will fit your budget. If your circumstances change at any
point, don’t worry, just tell us, BUT DO MAKE THE COMMITMENT TODAY!
Pay weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually - by check, through your bank, direct
deposit, PayPal or cash – whatever suits your budget! If you need help, contact
the office ([email protected] or 864-271-4883); they’re happy to help.
Board the train!
Ride with us on
this journey that
keeps us growing.
