LOOKING AHEAD
The Scriptures chosen for next Sunday are: Jeremiah 31:31-34; Psalm 51:1-12 or
Psalm 119:9-16; Hebrews 5:5-10; John 12:20-23.
The issue is, as we see it unfolding throughout this Lenten series of lessons, the
covenantal relationship between God and humankind. The Covenant is the meeting
place where God and humankind meet face to face. We joyfully celebrate the God
who has made a decisive step toward us in order to help, heal, save and deliver us.
Salvation is predicated upon the divine initiative to ransom, redeem, rescue and
recruit us for eternity. We see God’s work and will displayed in Jeremiah 31:31-34,
which speaks of a New Covenant-- not like the unilateral, cosmic Covenant that was
made with Noah; not like the eternal Covenant that was made with Abraham as a
unilateral commitment of God to produce and bless Abraham’s seed forever; and
also not like the strict moral code and Covenant made from God through Moses
with the people of Israel, who had been set free from slavery in order to be God’s peculiar people devoted to
God and instrumental in creating and sustaining justice in the earth. More than these, the new relationship
would be inscribed in the hearts and consciences of those who are in right relationship with God. Notice these
elements of Jeremiah’s new covenant:

Keith Gamble-Woodwind Music Lessons is offering music lessons for saxophone, flute and clarinet for a

Deborah Scales, a retired DPS band and orchestra teacher is available to assist in beginning strings, snare
drum, trumpet and trombone. There is no fee for her lessons. Lessons available for young people and adults.

(1) The New Covenant is collective and not individualistic. The individual will find life by being a member of a
people who are bound together with God. God is making a New Covenant to a new community, a new
people of internally motivated obedience.
Teen Connect Bible Study has star ted. Lear n the Wor d of God studying topics suggested by teens
that directly impact their daily living. Studies are 5:30 to 6:30 PM every Tuesday and include guest speakers,

(2) The New Covenant is a renewed covenant. It does not annul Mosaic law, but fulfills the Ten
Commandments and the Covenant Code of moral and spiritual conduct. The way God is related and bound
to us is the model of how we should be related and bound to one another.
The 2015 Hartford Adult Golf League is accepting registrations. We will be playing at Rouge Park Golf
Course, on Wednesdays, beginning in May. Golf fees will be $325 per player for the complete season, which

(3) The freedom and initiative of the New Covenant is not libertarianism or antinomianism, that is, without
commandments, statutes rules and regulations. The New Covenant means that the laws of God will be so
enlivened by the love of God that they will be written on hearts of flesh and not merely inscribed on tablets
of stone. That’s the only kind of law that really works on a day to day basis, the law that lives in the hearts
and consciences of those who have learned to know the law by heart and not just by head.
This New Covenant is praised throughout Psalm 119, where love and law embrace to form the moral
indoctrination and internalization of a Godly sense of human independence, inter-dependence and responsibility.
We are considering especially Psalm 119:9:16. The issue is this: “How can young people keep their way
pure?” It is the most difficult thing in all the world to be young; because youth must prove themselves to be
worthy of trust, consideration and acceptance, though they are new to life, lacking in achievement, absent of
history, experience, deep perspective, broad understanding and the wisdom that comes only through age,
experience and long reflection. Yet Psalm 119: 9-16 provides nine ways for young people to behave wisely and
wonderfully by:
(1) Seeking God wholeheartedly, verse 10a
(2) Not wandering from God’s Commandments, verse 10b
(3) Treasuring God’s Word in one’s heart, verse 11a
(4) Reciting with one’s own voice the teachings and laws of God’s Learning is loving, verse 13,
(5) Delighting in the path that God has decreed, verse 14a
(6) Fastening one’s mind on God’s Teachings, verse 15a
(7) Gluing one’s eyes on the path where God leads, verse 15b

Did you know that the Members Orientation Class is not just for new members? If it’s been years since you
last attended, never attended or did not complete the series, you are invited to come and learn more about your
Baptist heritage, after which you will be awarded your certificate of completion. Classes meet in the Chapel at
9:30 AM on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sundays.
You cannot read this Psalm without rededicating yourself to the Sunday School.
Hebrews 5:5-10 presents us with a profound look at our Great Savior, Jesus Christ, who is the Source,
Substance and Structure of our salvation. Notice these three features of Christ:
I.
Jesus is not a self-appointed priest, but the one designated by God (5:5-6, 10). He is God’s Son. He is also
a unique priest who stands in the succession of the mysterious and mystical Melchizedek, who ministered to
Abraham and received tithes of all from Abraham. Jesus is not our elected representative, but God’s gift of
God’s own self, soul and substance, in order that we might be citizens of God’s Paradise of praise, prayer
and power.
II. Our Great Savior has fully with us identified in weakness, intimacy and vulnerability. Jesus does not come
to us with an affected, superficial, supercilious “God complex.” He is meek and lowly of heart. He
sympathizes with our feebleness and frailty. He comes with no demanding imperial consciousness, but as
broken bread, poured out water, spilled blood, scattered light, open door and suffering servant. He begs for
no release from anxiety, easing of pain, rescue from death nor rush to happiness--only unbroken dialogue
with God. He learns obedience from suffering. Is there any other way to learn except by suffering?
III. Our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ, is the Source of salvation for all who obey him. His example of
reliance on God, amid his identification with human suffering, establishes a firm basis for Christian
conversion and decision as we new Christians learn through Christ to live according to God’s will, spirit
and word.
John 20:20-33 shows us Jesus as one who is so committed to our salvation that he is willing not only to die, but
to view death as his hour of glorification, exaltation, completion and attraction. It is the death of Christ that
empowers Christ to draw all people and all races and all nations to Himself.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE REFLECTION
The three SELMA TO MONTGOMERY MARCHES in
1965 were part of the Selma Voting Rights Movement and
led to the passage that year of the Voting Rights Act, a
landmark federal achievement of the 1960s American Civil
Rights Movement. Activists publicized the three protest
marches to walk the 54-mile (87 km) highway from
Selma to the Alabama state capital of Montgomery as
showing the desire of black American citizens to exercise
their constitutional right to vote, in defiance of
segregationist repression.
A
series
of
discriminatory
requirements
and
practices disenfranchised most of the millions of African
Americans across the South since the turn of the century.
The African American group known as The Dallas County
Voters League (DCVL) launched a voters registration campaign in Selma in 1963. Joined by organizers from
the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), they began working that year in a renewed effort to
register black voters. Finding resistance by white officials to be intractable, even after the Civil Rights Act of
1964 ended segregation, the DCVL invited Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the activists of the Southern
Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to join them. SCLC brought many prominent civil rights and civic
leaders to Selma in January 1965. Local and regional protests began, with 3,000 people arrested by the end of
February.
