Those able to examine themselves, accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament are welcome to partake. Holy Communion is offered with both common and individual cups (8:30 AM). If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. In addition, two wheelchairs are available for use in the building. Please ask an usher to assist you if needed. 2 INTRODUCTION The fourth of the Old Testament promises providing a baptismal lens this Lent is the promise God makes to Moses: those who look on the bronze serpent will live. In today's gospel Jesus says he will be lifted up on the cross like the serpent, so that those who look to him in faith will live. When we receive the sign of the cross in baptism, that cross becomes the sign we can look to in faith, for healing, for restored relationship to God, for hope when we are dying. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC CHILDREN’S MESSAGE Stand GATHERING HYMN “Give to Our God Immortal Praise!” [Tune: Duke Street, LSB 848] 1 2 Give to our God immortal praise! Mercy and truth are all his ways. Wonders of grace to God belong; repeat his mercies in your song. He sent his Son with pow’r to save from guilt and darkness and the grave. Wonders of grace to God belong; repeat his mercies in your song. Words: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748. Public domain. GATHERING INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. C: P: C: P: Holy God, mighty Lord, gracious Father: We give you thanks, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and you created heaven and earth. By the gift of water you nourish and sustain us and all living things. Blessed be God now and forever. By the waters of the flood you condemned the wicked and saved those whom you had chosen, Noah and his family. You led Israel by the pillar of cloud and fire through the sea, out of slavery into the freedom of the promised land. Blessed be God now and forever. In the waters of the Jordan your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit. By the baptism of his own death and resurrection 3 C: P: C: P: C: your beloved Son has set us free from the bondage to sin and death, and has opened the way to the joy and freedom of everlasting life. He made water a sign of the kingdom and of cleansing and rebirth. In obedience to his command, we make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Blessed be God now and forever. Pour out your Holy Spirit, so that those who are here baptized may be given new life. Wash away the sin of all those who are cleansed by this water and bring him forth as inheritors of your glorious kingdom. Blessed be God now and forever. To you be given praise and honor and worship through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE “Give to Our God Immortal Praise!” [Tune: Duke Street, LSB 848] 3 Give to the Lord of lords renown; the king of kings with glory crown. His mercies ever shall endure when lords and kings are known no more! Words: Isaac Watts, 1674-1748. Public domain. PRAYERS OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. O God, rich in mercy, by the humiliation of your Son you lifted up this fallen world and rescued us from the hopelessness of death. Lead us into your light, that all our deeds may reflect your love, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit FIRST READING—Numbers 21:4-9 WORD (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) Though God provides food and water for the Israelites in the wilderness, they whine and grumble. They forget about the salvation they experienced in the exodus. God punishes them for their sin, but when they repent God also provides a means of healing: a bronze serpent lifted up on a pole. After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 4 PSALMODY—Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22 P: O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; C: for his steadfast love endures forever. P: Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, C: those he redeemed from trouble P: and gathered in from the lands, C: from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: Some were sick through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities endured affliction; they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress; he sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from destruction. Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. And let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices, and tell of his deeds with songs of joy. P: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; C: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. SECOND READING—Ephesians 2:1-10 (Please see the back page of this worship folder.) While we were dead in our sinfulness, God acted to make us alive as a gift of grace in Christ Jesus. We are saved not by what we do but by grace through faith. Thus our good works are really a reflection of God's grace at work in our lives. After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand GOSPEL—John 3:14-21 (Please see the final page of this worship folder.) To explain the salvation of God to the religious leader, Nicodemus, Jesus refers to the scripture passage quoted in today's first reading. Just as those who looked upon the bronze serpent were healed, so people will be saved when they behold Christ lifted up on the cross. Before the reading: P: The holy gospel according to John. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 5 After the reading: P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sit SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Hymn 543 “What Wondrous Love Is This” Stand APOSTLES’ CREED P: God had made us God’s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P: Led by Christ in our journey of repentance and moved by his compassion, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation. After each petition: P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. The prayers conclude: P: Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. C: Amen. 6 Sit GATHERING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY RECEIVING OF OFFERINGS GATHERING OF ATTENDANCE SHEETS (All members, visitors, and guests are asked to sign the red Record of Fellowship and return it to the end of the row.) Stand OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Let us pray. God our provider, you have not fed us with bread alone, but with words of grace and life. Bless us and these your gifts, which we receive from your bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. MEAL PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. You call your people to cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast, that renewed in the gift of baptism, we may come to the fullness of your grace. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 7 EUCHARISTIC PRAYER P: You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. C: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P: Remembering, therefore, his salutary command, his life-giving passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension, and the promise of his coming again, we give thanks to you, O Lord God Almighty, not as we ought but as we are able; 8 we ask you mercifully to accept our praise and thanksgiving and with your Word and Holy Spirit to bless us, your servants, and these your own gifts of bread and wine, so that we and all who share in the body and blood of Christ may be filled with heavenly blessing and grace, and, receiving the forgiveness of sin, may be formed to live as your holy people and be given our inheritance with all your saints. To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever. C: Amen. LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION P: Come to the banquet, for all is now ready. LAMB OF GOD 9 Sit DISTRIBUTION OF THE SACRAMENT DISTRIBUTION HYMNS Hymn 744 “Amazing Grace” Hymn 566 “By Grace I’m Saved” Stand POST-COMMUNION BLESSING (11:00 a.m. worship service only) P: The body and blood of our Lord strengthen and preserve you steadfast in the true faith to life everlasting. C: Amen. POST-COMMUNION PRAYER P: Let us pray. Compassionate God, you have fed us with the bread of heaven. Sustain us in our Lenten pilgrimage: may our fasting be hunger for justice; our alms, a making of peace; and our prayer, the song of grateful hearts, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. SENDING BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. He himself admitted that up to this point he cared little for God. He escaped after six years, returned to his family in southwest Britain, and began to prepare for ordained ministry. He later returned to Ireland, this time to serve as a bishop and missionary. He made his base in the north of Ireland and from there made many missionary journeys, with much success. In his autobiography he denounced the slave trade, perhaps from his own experience as a slave. Patrick’s famous baptismal hymn to the Trinity, “I bind unto myself today” (LSB 604), can be used as a meditation on Lent’s call to return to our baptism. March 19—Joseph, Guardian of Jesus The gospels are silent about much of Joseph’s life. We know that he was a carpenter or builder by trade. The Gospel of Luke shows him acting in accordance with both civil and religious law by returning to Bethlehem for the census and by presenting the child Jesus in the temple on the fortieth day after his birth. The Gospel of Matthew tells of Joseph’s trust in God, who led him through visionary dreams. Because Joseph is not mentioned after the story of a young Jesus teaching in the temple, it is assumed that he died before Jesus reached adulthood. March 21—Thomas Cranmer, Bishop of Canterbury, martyr, died 1556 Cranmer was serving as bishop of Taunton in England when he was chosen by King Henry VIII to become archbishop of Canterbury, largely because Cranmer would agree to the king’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Cranmer’s lasting achievement is contributing to and overseeing the creation of the Book of Common Prayer, which in revised form remains the worship book of the Anglican Communion. He was burned at the stake under Queen Mary for his support of the Protestant Reformation. From Sundays and Seasons.com. Copyright 2015 Augsburg Fortress. All rights reserved. The first “fifth Sunday” is Palm Sunday, March 29. On that Sunday there will be one worship service at 9:30 a.m. There will be no Bible study. At 11:00 a.m., there will be a congregational potluck dinner. Everyone is welcome. As mentioned, that particular Sunday is Palm Sunday. The children will be parading with palms during the service. This is an event that is enjoyed by everyone! Please plan on attending. Parking could be a bit tight that day; you are invited to use the office parking area immediately to the west of our church parking lot. To help with planning, it would be helpful if individuals would be willing to bring food according to the following assignments. If this is not convenient, that is no problem. It is merely an attempt to try and ensure our menu will not consist of 40 desserts and no main dish! Families with last names starting with: A – G: Main Dish H – S: Side Dish or Salad T – Z: Dessert We look forward to enjoying this meal as an Immanuel family. HOLY WEEK WORSHIP SERVICES will be held at Immanuel for members of the congregations served by the LAWRENCE AREA CLERGY (an organization of which Immanuel is a member). These services—Monday, March 30; Tuesday, March 31; and Wednesday, April 1 —will begin at noon, run approximately 30 minutes, and be followed by a soup luncheon in the Activity Center. The luncheon will be provided by the congregation of one of our guest churches. Since the pastor of the hosting congregation generally is not asked to preach or lead liturgy for these worship services, Pastor Randy will be attending these services and sitting in the pews. Please plan to hear the Passion of our Lord in these special worship services! YOUNG FAMILIES FELLOWSHIP AND BIBLE STUDY is April 12th from 5-7pm in the Activity Center. It will be a pot-luck style meal so bring an entrée and side dish to share. Child care will be available during the bible study, just bring $2 per child to cover the cost. Plan on joining us! Any questions email Lisa Lahm at [email protected]. JUSTICE MATTERS UPDATE The Justice Matters Solutions Briefing will be on April 14, 2015 at 6:45 pm at Free Methodist Church. All team members and network members are encouraged to RSVP as soon as possible at the Justice Matters Website: www.justicemattersinkansas.org. This event will enable us to produce 2,000 informed supporters to our Nehemiah Action Assembly in May. CONTRIBUTIONS FOR NEW STAFF POSITION As you know, Immanuel has added a staff position to the budget to assist with the education ministry, college ministry and the music ministry. Please consider regular giving to fund that position. Donations can be made using the designated gift envelopes or they may be included in your regular giving envelope. Please put “new staff position” on the memo line on your check. Immanuel will need to have at least one year of salary in the account before advertising for the position. 15 NOTICE TO MEMBERS WHO PURCHASE GROCERY BUCKS – We received notice from Dillons that they will no longer sell Dillons grocery cards to us at the 6% discount we have enjoyed for the past 7 years! But you need to sign up and assign Immanuel Lutheran to your card for us to receive the payback. It will not be the 6% but it will be something paid quarterly based on how much we spend and how many people are in the program. Here is what you need to do. 1. Go to dillons.com 2. Click the Tab along the top labeled “community” and select “Community Rewards” 3. Either sign in (if you already have an account) or create an account (you must have an e -mail address). Want to get to know Immanuel’s family better? What better way than over food! If you desire to share your Sunday lunch plans with others, please meet in the Activity Center at 12:15pm each Sunday. Contact Eleanor Woodyard for more information, 842-3092. 16 GOING TO THE HOSPITAL? HAVE A MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY WHO IS? Please notify the church office if you or your family member wishes to be visited when hospitalized. Because of hospital policies, the church does not receive a phone call notifying us when a member is admitted to the hospital. Thanks for keeping this in mind! STEWARDSHIP SENTENCE – Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Even the good we do in this world is a gift from God, prepared beforehand for us to do. And this too is a gift! For isn’t doing good also good for the one who does it? So from first to last, from the Lord’s free salvation given to us to the good works God has prepared for us to walk in, it is all a gift of God’s grace. FUNERAL PLANNING: In the days following a death, it can often be overwhelming for family members to put together the details of a funeral. Whether it is following a long illness or a surprising accident, your loved ones may wonder what your wishes really were. Have you identified your wishes, written them down, and shared them with your family? To help you with this decision making, ILCUSC’s Health and Wellness Committee has printed a “Funeral Planning Worksheet” for your use. You may find copies of this document on the table in the church’s entryway. THE LUTHERAN HOUR In the end, forgiven sinners will not regret having followed Jesus. Listen to “The Lutheran Hour” next Sunday at 7:30 a.m. on radio station WIBW 580 AM (Topeka), at 8:00 a.m. on KCMO 710 AM (Mission), or at 8:30 a.m. on KLWN 1320 AM (Lawrence), as Lutheran Hour Speaker Rev. Gregory Seltz preaches on the topic, “No Regrets? Follow Jesus!” based on Matthew 16:21-26. Or you can listen to “The Lutheran Hour” on streaming MP3 at http://www.lutheranhour.org/default.asp A GREAT WAY YOU CAN HELP A HURTING FRIEND Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative who is going through a difficult time? Here's a great way you can help them—tell them about our Stephen Ministry! Stephen Ministers are members of Immanuel who have received special training to provide high quality, confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one, coping with a cancer diagnosis, going through a divorce or separation, battling a chronic illness (or caring for a spouse or parent who is chronically ill), experiencing a great deal of stress, facing the loss of a job—or encountering any of countless other life challenges. Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receivers to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. (Males are matched with males, and females are matched with females.) The caring relationship lasts for as long as the person needs care. It's free, and it's a powerful way you can help a hurting friend. To learn how to connect someone you know with a Stephen Minister, talk with Immanuel’s Stephen Ministry Leader, Pastor Randy.
