FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
MARCH 15, 2015
God pardons and raises up
those who have been unfaithful (1),
those who have loved the darkness rather than the light.
For God so loved the world
that he sent his only Son (2, 3)
to deliver the world from exile (Ps).
Liturgical Tidbits
RAISED UP BY THE MESSIAH
Intentions for March 14-March 21
Last week, when Jesus referred to the destruction of the temple, the
account from today’s first reading is what would have come to the
minds of his listeners. But, as Jesus was speaking on a deeper level,
so does today’s first reading. In the first paragraph we hear that Israel
had, in effect, “fallen” already through its infidelity to the covenant.
Lest we get too cozy, this account reminds us that God, though just,
loving, and merciful, is capable of punishing sin when that sin is
unrepentant. But we are also reminded that God, rich in mercy,
anoints individuals to be vessels of salvation as well (in Hebrew,
King Cyrus of Persia is called “messiah”). In the Gospel reading, we
hear of another Messiah being “lifted up” for our salvation in one of
the best-known passages from the New Testament. As Lent
concludes and we enter Holy Week, we need to keep our gaze
steadfast upon the cross of Christ, the Son of God who came into the
world to raise us who had fallen.

THE LIGHT IS ON FOR YOU
This week we continue the “Light is On for You”
Lenten initiative. We encourage you to invite family or friends to
consider receiving the healing, freedom and light of the Sacrament
of Reconciliation. During Lent, every Catholic church throughout
the County of Santa Clara, including our own, will offer the
Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday (March 18) evenings
from 6-8 pm. To find confession times at other churches and for
additional resources visit www.dsj.org/light
STATIONS OF THE CROSS & LENTEN SOUP DINNER
We are in the fourth week of Lent. We will continue our
preparation for Easter by making the weekly Stations of
the Cross this Friday evening, March 20, at 6:15 pm, in
the Church and then partaking of a simple meal of soup
and bread prepared by the Scouts in Farana Center hall
immediately after the Stations at 6:45 pm. Those not able to attend
the Stations are invited to join everyone in Farana Center for the
soup dinner. The soup is donated but a small offering is being asked for
the support of community programs. We welcome everyone to join us.

Neighbor-to-Neighbor Assistance: We wish to thank all of the
parishioners who generously give to our SVdP conference. Your
donations make it possible for us to help many needy families during these
difficult economic times. In February, we helped fifty-four families with
assistance including $3,750 in rent, $200 in Safeway cards, $679 in
utilities, $73 in bus passes, $183 in auto insurance, $191 in miscellaneous
food and shoes and provided forty bags of groceries from our pantry.
Join us for Rice and Bean Bagging: Please join our SVdP Conference in
bagging rice and beans for the hungry in the community on Sunday,
March 22 after the 8:30 am and 10 am Masses in the Farana Center hall
(during coffee and donuts). Families are welcome!
Feast Day: Today is the feast day of St. Louise de Marillac, a French
widow who worked with “the original” St. Vincent de Paul serving the
poor in 17th century France. With Vincent, Louise founded the Daughters
of Charity, a Catholic society of Apostolic Life that is still active in ninetyfour countries.
Food for our Pantry: Please help us stock our SVdP pantry for coming
weeks. This week we need pasta, pasta sauce, rice, canned soup, canned
meat, peanut butter, and canned fruit. Donations should be placed in the
baskets at the entrances to the Church. We can also use paper grocery bags
(preferably doubled). Please no fresh produce or partially used food.
Thank you!
WELCOME TO OUR NEWLY BAPTIZED
