Liturgical Tidbits
WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY
The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples
who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely
the best known among these is the first reading from today, from
which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth
of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more
miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we
are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God.
More than examples of those who trust, they are models of selfsurrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices
about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief
in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who
can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who
can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant
town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as
God’s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves
and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and
surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise.

Happy New Year. Classes will take a break for Christmas and New
Year’s holidays. Classes will resume on Monday, January 5,
2015.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Baptism is the first sacrament of Christian initiation.
All sacraments are celebrations of Christ’s love at
work in our lives as members of a community of
faith. Parents of infants/young children are asked to: (1) contact the
parish to set a time to speak to one of the priests; (2) register for
and (3) attend a baptism information presentation. The next class is
January 17, 2015, at 10 am - alcoves of Farana Center.
SPONSORS
At least one sponsor (godfather/godmother) is required, and must
be a baptized/confirmed and practicing Catholic. Sponsors/
godparents must attend a baptism workshop - either in this parish

Thomas Becket, died December 29, 1170, killed by order of Henry
II; eight years chancellor of England; as archbishop of Canterbury
defended the freedoms and rights of the Church; canonized only
three years after his death; considered the most famous martyr of
the Middle Ages.
Wed, Dec 31: St. Sylvester I, Pope.
Sylvester, died 335; as bishop of Rome (314-335), organized
public worship and dedicated the Lateran basilica; represented at
the Council of Nicea which condemned Arianism; one of the first
non-martyrs venerated as a saint.
Thurs, Jan 1, 2015: Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of
God.
Today, is the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of the Lord. We seek
God’s blessings (1,Ps) as did Mary. Because of her Son (3), we can
confidently call God “Abba” (2)!

Bishops, Doctors of the Church.
Basil, died January 1, 379; hermit who became bishop of Caesarea
in Cappadocia; noted for his learning; foe of Arianism; wrote a rule
on monasticism; source of Eucharistic Prayer IV; along with
Gregory Nazianzen, Athanasius and John Chrysostom, considered
one of the four great doctors of the Eastern Church.
Gregory Nazianzen, died January 25, 389/390; Patriarch of
Constantinople; noted for his knowledge of sacred Scripture; called
theologus for his outstanding teaching abilities and eloquence.
Sat, Jan 3: The Most Holy Name of Jesus.
Through the particular efforts of St. Bernardine of Siena, devotion
to the Holy Name of Jesus was promoted through the inscription of
the monogram of the Holy Name, IHS (Iesus Hominum Salvator),
and the addition of the name of Jesus to the Hail Mary.
Thanks to our parishioners who returned their offerings to the Lord
for December 14: Regular collection $9,834.50
