President’s Note

RCAM has a new
executive director –
Bill Gurney, former
Co-Superintendent
of SAU-29. We are
fortunate to have
Bill’s knowledge of
the Keene community and Monadnock
region, as well as his
educational background, leading the conversation
for which RCAM has become known.

More than five years ago, in response to concerns
expressed by Chamber members and others in
Keene and the Monadnock Region about the dwindling “pipeline” of trained machinists to fill jobs
in advanced manufacturing for companies in the
area, the Greater Keene Chamber of Commerce
launched an initiative called the Regional Center
for Advanced Manufacturing (RCAM).
The Chamber’s workforce development coordinator at the time, Susan Newcomer, reached out to
educational institutions in the area for support.
Keene State College, River Valley Community College, the Keene School District, and the leaders of
those organizations, signed on with the president
of the Chamber to become the “principals” of the
new initiative.
Local manufacturers joined the RCAM initiative and, for the first time – at
least in recent memory – educational institutions, the business community,
and stakeholders from the public sector met regularly to explore ways to develop a sustainable manufacturing workforce for the 21st century. That group,
RCAM’s Business Advisory Committee (BAC) has been meeting ever since. In
addition, RCAM’s Operations Committee – made up of its educational and
training partners – has been meeting regularly, and will continue to do so, led
by Keene State College.
There are a number of programs in place now that did not exist before RCAM:
Keene Community Education, under the leadership of Jan Barry, now offers a
Machining Apprentice Program; River Valley Community College has offered
a Machine Tool Boot Camp, and is the regional home to an unique program
called Work Ready; and Keene State College now offers a major called Sustainable Product Design & Innovation (SPDI), one of the fastest growing majors
on its campus. In yet another example of RCAM inspired collaboration, each
of these RCAM partners has been able to use the SPDI Lab on the Keene State
campus for one or more of its courses (several pieces of the equipment in the
lab were purchased with funds raised by the RCAM initiative).
We may take this kind of collaboration we see in RCAM for granted in the
Monadnock Region, but it is not seen that way in other parts of the state and
beyond. While workforce development issues have gained visibility in the
state in recent years, and there is no magic or quick formula for “fixing it,” the
consortium we call RCAM is a model for how the issue can be discussed, and
solutions formulated.
Bill Gurney will be based at Keene State College, where he can be reached at
[email protected], or 603-358-2296. Please contact him with thoughts on how
we can continue to make progress on developing and maintaining the advanced
manufacturing and high technology workforce our region needs to thrive.

Monadnock Family Services (MFS) is the Monadnock region’s community
mental health center. Almost 200 team members work with about 500 children
and 800 adults each year through mental wellness programs,
including those described below that receive Monadnock United Way funding.
ActingOut is a teen improvisational theater initiative. Middleand high-school students develop performance skills that also
cultivate their social, emotional, and leadership abilities. Students
who lack friends or don’t take part in extracurricular activities
often find a home with ActingOut. One girl told us “this is the
first place where I feel like I can be myself ”.
MFS clinicians in Acute Care Services are on call 24 hours every
day of the year to respond to persons experiencing a mental
health crisis. Our team teaches people in crisis how to calm
themselves and manage their feelings while the clinician makes
an initial diagnosis and plans next steps in the person’s care and
treatment. For individuals whose condition is serious but less
urgent, an Acute Care Service team member can arrange for a
6
quick appointment with a therapist at MFS for a more detailed
assessment and treatment plan.
The All R Kids Supervised Visitation Center, or ARK, in Jaffrey
is unique in the Monadnock region. It’s the area’s only neutral,
professionally supervised, child-friendly place where children can
safely spend time with parents who are under a court order to
visit their children only under supervision, due to a high risk of
abduction or violence against the child.
Some families in our region live in jeopardy of poverty, unemployment, homelessness, and hunger. Many perpetuate the ineffective or counterproductive approaches to parenting that they
experienced when they were young.

coach them to become effective advocates for their family.
The Monadnock Adult Care Center – MACC – welcomes adults
age 18 and older who need medical or other forms of care or
supervision during weekdays. MACC’s nurses and staff provide
more than medical services, physical and speech therapy, and podiatry care. They also offer structured programs that maintain and
strengthen cognitive skills and memory, the ability to socialize, and
to enjoy life with games, movies, events, outings, and a breakfast
and lunch that meet national nutrition standards.
