36th Annual Shields Research Day 2015 Friday, May 8th, 2015 Arcadian Court, 401 Bay Street, Simpson Tower, 8th Floor Toronto, Ontario M5H 2Y4 Goals and Objectives The purpose of the Annual Shields Research Day at the University of Toronto, Department of Anesthesia is to provide an excellent research and training opportunity for Anesthesia faculty, residents, fellows, graduate students and anesthesia assistants who wish to keep abreast of current research initiatives in the field. Our trainees (residents, fellows and graduate students) are provided with a unique opportunity to experience all the stages of presenting their peer‐reviewed work at a scientific meeting, from the abstract writing and submission process to the poster design and oral presentation phase. The Annual Research Shields Day prepares trainees for a future role in academe, under the guidance of experienced faculty mentors. The second goal of the Annual Shields Research Day is to create synergies for collaborative research (both clinical and basic science) that will enhance the work and advance knowledge beyond what each investigator can accomplish independently. Finally, the participants will have an opportunity to discuss topics of interest in the field of anesthesia and gain a better understanding on research methodologies. Goal 1 To prepare our trainees for the life‐long study and practice of anesthesia and, to prepare our trainees to initiate, and adapt to, changes in medicine, research and health care. Goal 2 To offer learning experiences that will lead to careers in clinical practice, academic medicine, and basic and clinical research. Goal 3 To develop a program that will highlight the achievements of residents and fellows’ research endeavors. Objectives At the end of this educational activity, learners will be able to:  Describe current, novel and developing research performed within the University of Toronto, Department of Anesthesia.  Identify possible areas of research which they may peruse during their career and mentors which will be able to guide them through their chosen research area.  Discuss the department’s present strengths, and the breadth and depth of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto;  Understand the knowledge and skills required to work as members of a multidisciplinary health care team.
