It aims to enhance your ensemble’s learning curve through workshop, performance and adjudication at one of the world’s famous park, Hong Kong Disneyland. Performance venue and sites in the Park have been carefully chosen ensuring highest performance quality possible. Clinicians and adjudicators are selected to give detailed and useful comments during your performance. Educational clinic will be available for the adjudicator to provide personalized feedback for the participating band after the performance. If group size is 45; up to 4 professional musicians can be included. Music performed must be a least Grade 4 and above (in accordance to music graded by publisher) (b) In order to allow smooth transition of performances, performing bands are to adhere to the following schedule: a. 15 minutes at designated holding room(s) before proceeding to stage, b. 20 or 30 minutes of performance (including set up time) (c) Bands are required to select ONE required work that will be announced in August 2015 and made available for purchase thereafter. Directors are encouraged to select appropriate graded music that challenges their band. (d) Directors are required to provide three scores for each selection of your choice music. (e) Professional musician is defined as one who has obtained a professional qualification majoring in music performance and is currently performing and/or teaching as their primary source of income. (f) No sound check in the concert hall before competition commences. Disney Performing Arts (Performance) (a) Performance will be held inside Hong Kong Disneyland Park. (b) Bands are required to perform no more than 15 minutes programme. (c) Performance and proposed programme will be sent for approval by Hong Kong Disneyland Entertainment Team upon submission of all required materials before 31 August 2015. Awards (a) Adjudicators will evaluate each performing band based on 100-­‐point scale and final score will be averaged, up to 2 decimal points. (b) Types of Awards: Gold 80% and above Silver 70% – 79.99% Bronze 60% – 69.99% Fair* 59.99% and below © 2015 RGPL (TA 01548) 5 7th Winter Band Festival™ 2015 (c) For a positive learning environment, bands receiving “Fair” Awards will be announced as “Comments Only” at the Awards Ceremony. Original ratings and comments will be sent to directors after the event. (d) Results will be announced at the end of each Division. Penalty (a) In the event that performing band’s total stage time exceeded 1 minute or more than 2 minutes, the organisers reserve the rights to impose a penalty of 5% or 10% respectively. Tim Lautzenheiser is a well-­‐known name in the music education world as a teacher, clinician, author, composer, conductor, consultant, and, above all, a trusted friend to anyone interested in working with young people in developing a desire for excellence. His career involves ten years of successful college band directing at Northern Michigan University, the University of Missouri, and New Mexico State University. During this time Tim developed highly acclaimed groups in all areas of the instrumental and vocal field. Following three years in the music industry, he created Attitude Concepts, Inc., an organization designed to manage the many requests for workshops, seminars, and convention speaking engagements focusing on the area of positive attitude and effective leadership training. He presently holds the Earl Dunn Distinguished Lecturer position at Ball State University. Tim also is the Executive Director of Education for Conn-­‐Selmer, Inc. His books, produced by G.I.A. Publications, The Art of Successful Teaching, The Joy of Inspired Teaching, and Everyday Wisdom are bestsellers in the educational world. He is also co-­‐author of Hal Leonard’s popular band method, Essential Elements. Tim is a graduate of Ball State University and the University of Alabama. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from VanderCook College of Music. Additional awards include the distinguished Sudler Order of Merit from the John Philip Sousa Foundation, Mr. Holland’s Opus Award and the Music Industry Award from the Midwest Clinic Board of Directors. © 2015 RGPL (TA 01548) 8 7th Winter Band Festival™ 2015 Adjudicators & Clinicians Mr. Surapol Thanyawibool (Thailand) Head of Western Music Division, Kasetsart University A familiar face with many Asian and Singapore bands, Mr Surapol Thanyawibool is known to be one of the most distinguished conductors from Thailand. He has worked with bands in many countries and led ensembles to garner outstanding achievements in local and international music event. Mr. Surapol graduated from the Chulalongkorn University and has participated in many significant international events. His involvement in the performing arts scene includes being the Show Director of the “United of Asia” Performance at the Opening Ceremony of the 13th Asian Games and the Coordinator for the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation at the Special Concert in Celebration of His Majesty’s Golden Jubilee performance by the World Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Surapol conducted the Bangkok Christian College Band and Wat Suthiwararam School Band which the latter clinched the First Prize with Distinction and Trophy of the Week at the World Music Contest in Kerade, Netherlands in 1996 under his leadership. Mr. Surapol has also participated in the Concert Band Programme in Tenri, Nara, Japan and the Mid-­‐
West Bands and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, USA. Currently, Mr Surapol is the Head of Western Music Division at the Kasetsart University in Thailand and also the Music Director of the university’s Wind Symphony. © 2015 RGPL (TA 01548) 9 7th Winter Band Festival™ 2015 Adjudicators & Clinicians Mr. Masanori Fukuda (Japan) Music Director & Lecturer, Senzoku Gakuen College of Music Masanori Fukuda was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1962. He graduated with honors majoring in euphonium and a postgraduate diploma in performing arts from the Tamagawa University and Senzoku Gakuen College of Music specializing in conducting. He also studied with Prof. Toru Miura (Euphonium), Prof. Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Prof. Yoshitomo Kawachi, Prof. Yasuhiko Shiozawa, Mr. Douglas Bostock and Maestro Frederick Fennell (Conducting). After winning 3rd prize in the 6th Japan Wind and Percussion Competition, he was invited to perform in various concerts including recordings with bands such as the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Siena Wind Orchestra, amongst others. He also performs regularly as solo euphoniumist with the Tokyo Brass Society and Euphonium-­‐Tuba Company. He appeared in International Euphonium-­‐Tuba Conference (USA) as a member of The Euphonium Company in 1992. With his passion and pursuit for excellence in music performance, he took part in the conducting master class directed by Maestro Fennell. He won the best conductor prize in the All Japan Band Contest in 2010 and 2012 and was also awarded the Excellent Director Award from Ibaraki Prefecture Band Federation in 2010 and 2000. In 2013, he was awarded a special commendation from the Japan Band Directors’ Association. He is currently serving as a director with the Japan Euphonium-­‐Tuba Association and Japan Brass Band Directors’ Association, music director of the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music British Brass Band, Sony Wind Orchestra, Tokyo Brass Society and Brass Band Spirits Nagano. He is also a highly demanded euphonium soloist, conductor, composer, judge and clinician in Japan. In 2014, he was invited as a adjudicator and clinician by Wind Bands Association of Singapore for the 4th Singapore International Band Festival and appointed as one of the conductor for the 2nd WBAS Youth Band Festival. As a composer and arranger, a lot of works of him are published and distributed by Brain music, Sumiya Band Inn and Winds Style in Japan. Airfare is excluded due to fluctuating airfares, taxes and fuel surcharges at different booking period. This also allows you to have the choice of purchasing your own air tickets. Which airlines fly to Hong Kong? Direct flights are available from Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and United Airlines. Do visit the respective airlines’ website for their flight schedule. What other things do we need to submit other than the application form? As mentioned in page 3, you are required to submit the following together with the application form by 31 August 2015 1. Profile of your ensemble (no more than 150 words) 2. Photograph of your ensemble and conductor (at least 300dpi – in JPEG or TIFF) 3. Recent performance of the ensemble with at least 2 songs in the video recording.
Are parents and siblings of participating students allowed to join this programme? Yes, family members and spouse of participating group may support them at the competition venue and in Hong Kong Disneyland Park (admission charges apply) for Disney Performing Arts programme. Unfortunately, they are not allowed at the gala dinner and workshop. Are there rehearsal venues available before the competition? There are a multitude of places around the hotel and competition venue where impromptu practices can be held. If you require a private room for practice, bookings can be made through us at the hotel for their function room which is subjected to prevailing price and availability as advised by the hotel. Do note that there are no instruments and music stands provided at these venues. Can we extend this trip? Yes, you can. Please contact Rave Group for more information and customisation of the packages. Can we opt out of band exchange programme? Yes, you can. We have kept the band exchange programme optional as the daily official programmes are packed from morning till late evening. Sample itinerary can be made available upon request. Is there a dressing room for each participating ensemble during the competition? Due to venue constrain, each participating ensemble will not be assigned to a dressing room. Participanting ensemble shall take care of its personal belongings and instrument cases while performing on stage.
