Once again, it is my pleasure on behalf of Queen’s Park Football Club, to welcome Pat Gillooly and his fellow Directors, Darren Young and his coaching staff and the players and supporters of Albion Rovers Football Club to Hampden Park for our SPFL Division 2 match this afternoon. This is the 5th match between the clubs this season and although all have been closely contested, we have yet to “break our duck” against the Rovers! With the league being so closely contested, it would certainly be a good time for us to put one over our old rivals. No matter, I’m sure it will be another highly competitive, fiercely fought encounter. A Word from the Gaffer. Good Afternoon and a warm welcome to today’s League 2 match against our near neighbours and title challengers, Albion Rovers. We were delighted with our crucial victory last week at Elgin, thanks to a last minute winner by Jordan Moore, which certainly made the long bus journey home pass quickly. Albion Rovers will be coming into this game very confident after their midweek victory over Arbroath which outs them in poll position. It should be an exciting and competitive game this afternoon and hopefully we can get our first victory against rovers this season. Once again thank you for your valued support. Enjoy the game. I hope you all have a very enjoyable afternoon. Gus MacPherson. Ronald A Jack President Queen’s Park Football Club Queen’s Park 1st Team Season 2014 / 2015 Blair Lochhead, 20. David McWIlliams, 21. Queen’s Park had been members of the Football Association since 1870 but had come to the view that Scottish clubs should have a national association of their own. They invited the other Scots clubs to a meeting in March 1873 to consider having a competition for Scottish teams in the following season. Representatives of eight clubs attended the meeting and they agreed to organise a cup competition and form themselves into a Scottish Football Association. A total of 16 teams entered the first Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup competition in season 1873/74. The clubs taking part were invited to contribute towards the cost of purchasing a trophy and badges (medals). A total of £56 12s 11d was raised. This enabled the SFA to purchase the Scottish Cup, which is now the oldest soccer trophy in the world. The Cup Final took place at the original Hampden Park on Saturday 21 March 1874 and it was fitting that the country’s two leading clubs, Queen’s Park and Clydesdale, were the finalists. This was the first meeting of the two teams. On their way to the final, Queen’s Park had defeated Dumbreck, Eastern and Renton, while the Kinning Park side had accounted for Granville, 3rd Lanark Rifle Volunteers and Blythswood. The game had generated considerable interest and the handsome trophy had been displayed in the window of the makers’ shop in Buchanan Street in the days leading up to the match. An enthusiastic crowd of around 2,500 was present at the game. This was a significant attendance in 1874, particularly given the relative inaccessibility of Hampden Park. In the early stages of the match, the players struggled with the extremely bobbly pitch and strong, gusty wind. Clydesdale pushed forward with the wind at their backs but the Queen’s Park defence stood firm. The first major incident of the game came after half an hour and involved something not unfamiliar to modern-day fans – a controversial refereeing decision. Following a corner kick, Clydesdale’s Fred Anderson shot for goal. The ball was scrambled away but had it passed under the tape? In the days before linesmen, the officials consisted of a referee and two umpires. One umpire signalled a goal but the other umpire disagreed. Referee James McIntyre of Ciaran Donnelly Midfielder Donnelly is currently in his 10th season with Albion Rovers having joined the club in May 2005 from his first club Hamilton the Eastern club settled the dispute by ruling in Queen’s favour. Despite it being plain as plain can be on the front of the bidding document that the World Cup would be played in the summer, Qatar will now be allowed to host the World Cup in, probably, November and December of 2022. Keith McAllister The utter nonsense of awarding a tournament to a country that bakes in the summer, and maintaining that it would be held in that baking summer, has been shown up as yet another decision that shames FIFA. All the ridiculous notions of playing games in climatecontrolled stadia are claptrap and even a winter tournament in Qatar will be a challenge for those at the side of the park, let alone those who have to try to perform on it. Who can forget Maradona’s outburst at officials after the USA World Cup in 1994 when he asked, in no uncertain terms, how the authorities expected great football in hostile weather conditions? The weather is only one of the worries. Most European countries will now have to schedule in at least two months of inaction, given that international sides will have their players from mid-October until mid-December. Add into the mix that it’s a bit rich to expect players who have just pushed themselves through a demanding World Cup schedule to return to domestic action straight away. Irrespective of how much these guys are paid, the toll on their bodies will probably mean that half of the 2022/23 season will be written off for those plying their trade in the top leagues in the likes of England, Germany, Spain and Italy. Eh…and Scotland, of course! With international fixtures being shuffled around already so as not to affect the bigger leagues and the UEFA club competitions (Scotland v Gibraltar on a Sunday evening appeal to anyone?), it is most likely that national team matches will be hit hard. Forget about friendlies.
