Hats off to Louie Mayer and his team for making this possible. As some of you are well aware, we have a lot of competition for our Friday dinners due to the Lenten season. Lots of fish specials going on all over Peoria that tend to reduce our Friday Night attendance. The special Sunday Fests, we’ve held over the last few months have been a boon to the club. Hopefully, we can continue to offer these type of Sunday Fests in years to come!! Wanted! Hey folks, we’d could use a few more members or even non-members to volunteer to help in the kitchen at our events at both the Hall and at Hickory Grove. Some of these tasks are pretty easy such as working the serving line. While other tasks are a bit more challenging such as food preparation and cooking. We really need a couple of folks to step up and help with the cooking. If interested in getting involved or want to know more please drop me a note and I will direct you to the appropriate personnel. Thanks to all of you who have renewed your dues for 2015! We greatly appreciate it your promptness. For those of you who haven’t there is still some time to do so, but starting in Mid-April you may be dropped off of the membership roster, which may limit your opportunities to participate in some of the affiliate activities. The idea of Marchtober Fest is to bring the spirit of Oktoberfest to Peoria 7 months early. Also, why should the Irish have all of the fun in March! The date is Sunday, March 29th from noon-6pm. Buffet Dinner: $12/Adults & $6/Kids Beef Rouladen, Bratwurst, Schnitzel, Chicken Parmesan, German Green Beans, Red Cabbage, Sauerkraut, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, and Spaetzle! Dessert: Apfel Strudel Extra! You can expect will be offering bock biers and probably an Oktoberfest or Märzen Bier as well as wonderful German food! This is the last of our Winter Fests at the Lindenhof! Make sure you do not miss it! MÄRZEN AKA: Oktoberfestbier or Märzen-Oktoberfestbier Pronunciation guide for English-speakers: "Maer-tsen". Pronounce the "ae" in the first syllable like the "a" in "bad". Do NOT pronounce it like the planet Mars with an "en" at the end! Definition: Märzen is the historic forerunner of the Oktoberfestbier. In the Middle Ages, brewers had a difficult time brewing good-tasting beers during the hot summer months when the brew could easily become infected with air-born bacteria. To have an ample supply of saleable beer on hand during the summer, brewers worked overtime in March to brew an extra strong and wellhopped beer that would keep for a long time. Märzen is German for March, so the beer came to be known for the month in which it was brewed. In time, the March beer turned into an October beer. When the summer was over and it was safe to resume brewing again, the brewers needed to empty their kegs to make room for the new brews. That meant that Märzen had to be finished off in a hurry. Throw a little bit of merriment into the mix, and you've got an Oktoberfest with a Märzen beer party. Modern Märzen, like Oktoberfestbier, is always well-aged, usually for at least four to eight weeks. It is usually amber in color and has an alcohol content of 5 to 6.2%. We will have our kick‐off meeting at the Lindenhof on March 31st at 5:30 p.m. Food will be provided. Please watch your email for further information on that item. Our fee for the SVP Mixed Golf League is $15.00 per person (this goes towards prizes at the end of the season) so please have that when you come to the meeting. We golf at the Kellogg Executive Nine course every Tuesday 4:00 p.m. starting on April 7th and play through to August 25, 2015. Green fees this year are $11.75. Please come join us at our meeting if you are interested in golfing this season. Contact information for the league is Jane Klockenga ([email protected]) Volunteers Needs for Pretzel Booth at Beer Festival Please contact Roger Martin at 696-2530 to work at the Peoria Jaycee International Beer Fest at Expo Gardens on Saturday, April 18th. Must have at least 7-8 Harmonie supporters per shift! Shift 1 from 1-4pm and Shift 2 from 4-8pm. This was a very successful event for Harmonie last year as well as a great opportunity to promote the German-American Society! Volunteers get free admission into the event as well. This is a $15 value. Those who worked last year had a great time! I’ve requested the opportunity for Harmonie to sell brats and frankfurters besides pretzels this year, so we will need a couple more volunteers per shift. For those of you who missed signing up for pouring beer this is a great chance to participate in one of the best events in Central Illinois!!! You will need provide Roger with your name, your phone number, and e-mail address for us to sign you up. Also, you must be 21 years old to enter the festival. Membership Dues for 2015 are Payable Now! Note to all members who joined prior to September of last year, your 2015 Dues are now due. Mailing information is below. An application is attached. $30 for primary membership dues. $15 for secondary membership dues. Junior membership fees are only $10 per year. I would not recommend writing one check to cover both your primary and secondary membership dues. If you do, make sure you notify both affiliates as to what your check covers and make sure they acknowledge that your dues have been paid. I normally write separate checks to each affiliate. For Harmonie, I pay my dues on-line through CEFCU Bill Pay. Please write separate checks to each affiliate. We do not have processes in place to make sure you renewal funds get to the proper affiliate if you try to write one check for multiple affiliates. NOTE: I would encourage all members to renew by check. That way you will have a record of paying your dues. We’ve had folks over the years who somehow did not get credit for paying their dues and were dropped from our roster through no fault of their own. URGENT!!! For those of you who have moved and or planning to move PLEASE!!!!! notify Jeff Pulfer as to your new address and I will forward the change to the membership secretary in the affiliate you belong to as to your new address. I maintain the Master Roster for the GACS and due to sending out the snail mail newsletter I tend to find out that people moved prior to the affiliate membership secretaries. Music and Culture Committee News: We are always looking for people interested in the German Kultur. Volkstänzer Our folkdance group practices most Sundays at 5:00PM at the Lindenhof. We learn dances from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to perform at GACS functions as well as other venues around the area. We are always looking for new dancers who would like to join our group. German Language The Music and Culture Committee is currently sponsoring a Stammtisch at the Lindenhof the second Friday of the month at 6:00PM. A Stammtisch is an informal group meeting held on a regular basis around a large table. 1 or 2 tables will be reserved on these Fridays for practicing and/or learning to speak German. The conversation is informal but held in German. Come out, get a good German meal and have some fun with language.
