Father Theodore Hesburgh, the past
President of the University of Notre
Dame, died a month ago on February
22. In 1958, he delivered the homily
at the dedication Mass for St. John
Church & Student Center in East
Lansing by invitation from Msgr. MacEachin, the pastor
of St. Thomas Aquinas and founder of SJSC.

visit Red Cedar Friends, Cristo Rey, Islamic Center of
East Lansing and Bharatiya Temple. Boarding of the
bus will start at 7:45am and depart from STA parking
lot at 8:00am. Tours of each facility will include a short
presentation. The bus is handicapped accessible.
“Father Ted served as the 15th president of the University
of Notre Dame from 1952 until his retirement in
1987. He was one of the nation's most influential figures
in higher education, the Catholic Church and national and
international affairs. While serving four Popes and
accepting 16 presidential appointments, Father Ted was a
moral force in virtually all major social issues of his day,
including civil rights, peaceful uses of atomic energy,
campus unrest, treatment of Vietnam draft evaders, thirdworld development and immigration reform. Next to Notre
Dame’s founder, Father Edward Sorin, no one has had a
greater impact on the University than Father Ted. With
his appointments to the faculty, his creation of great
centers and institutes for scholarship and research, his
commitment to our Catholic character, and most of all his
leadership, charisma and vision, he turned what was a
school well-known for football into one of the nation’s great
institutions for higher learning. Of his many
accomplishments at the University, Father Ted was
particularly proud of Notre Dame’s admission of women to
the undergraduate program beginning under his leadership
in 1972.”

for the SJSC St. Vincent de Paul Society to collect

March 22: Warm Blankets Orphan Care
International, for Bulboa Church Orphan Home in
Wakiso District, Uganda. Bulboa Church offers a
safe nurturing environment, with the pastor and his
wife acting as foster parents for children orphaned by
Aids and left to the streets because they are forsaken
by all.
March 29: The total collection for Palm
Sunday will be split between two Matthew 25
recipients:
Sisters of the Holy Cross—This mission in Sao
Paolo, Brazil, provides emergency food needs for
children living in the slums there.

Palestine Children’s Relief Fund for Huda Al
Masti Pediatric Cancer Dept.—Provides medical
care in the West Bank for children in the Middle East
and Gaza who are unable to obtain necessary and
specialized treatment in their homeland.

They will examine frequent stress points in
relationships like arguments, debt and money
management, division of labor, family dynamics and
more. All single or dating students or parish young
professionals aged 18-25 are welcome.
I want to always be worthy of God’s grace and love. I
want to show that love to others through my words
and actions. I don’t want to ever miss an encounter
with God, whether He is speaking to me or using me
to speak to another.
I want to be open to God’s plan for me. I want to not
worry so much and trust that God is leading me to
great things. I want to have the courage to always say
“yes” to all that God asks of me.
One day I want to have kids, and I want to be able to
tell them about God using personal stories. I want to
raise them to know God as I know Him, as a friend.

Faith-Based Stories & Reflections
6-7:30pm Wednesday March 25
All students and parishioners are invited to attend this
week's final Soup & Substance, held in McDevitt
Hall, downstairs St. John Church & Student Center.
ASB groups will share their experiences and spiritual
insights over a simple (but delicious!) meal prepared
by the best soup chefs in the Midwest.
Mercy in the Summer
College and Grad Students – Join us this summer
as we go out into our community to answer Jesus’
command to serve God by serving others. On seven
Fridays spread out over the course of summer, we
will participate in activities that will combine service,
prayer, reflection, and fellowship.

their Alternative Spring Break Trips”
Partnering with local non-profits at work in the
greater Lansing area, the service topics will address
the seven Corporal Works of Mercy:







Come and hear our MSU students share their stories
and reflections on their week of service at locations
across the country during their spring break. All are
welcome! Parents are also encouraged to bring their
junior high children and teens to hear and be inspired
by our college students sharing their inspiring stories
of service and how these experiences impacted their
faith. Join us for our final Lenten Soup &
Substance program this Wednesday evening,
March 25, in McDevitt Hall at St. John (please
note the change of venue!).

This initiative was inspired by the book “Mercy in the
City: How to Feed the Hungry, Give Drink to the Thirsty,
Visit the Imprisoned, and Keep Your Day Job”. As such,
author Kerry Weber has agreed to serve side-byside with our students during our final service project
and to lead a discussion of our experiences.
We begin at 6:00pm with prayer and a simple meal of
soup and rolls, followed by our student presentations from
6:30-7:30pm. Operation Rice Bowls will be available or
feel free to bring canned goods for our St. John Food
Cupboard if you can!
Non-Michigan State University students that are
returning to their SJSC/STA home parish for the
summer are encouraged to participate! Contact John

Faculty/Community Book Discussion Group
Our reading group will meet on Thursdays, April 9
and 23, to discuss two articles from Commonweal.
On Thursday, April 9, we will discuss, “An Interview
with Cardinal Walter Kasper -- Merciful God,
Merciful Church.” commonwealmagazine.org
i.d. 916 Discipleship Night For Young Adults
i.d. 916 seeks to urge young adults in their 20s and
30s to answer the call to discipleship through
monthly talks and fellowship, faith sharing groups and
more.
During his first Angelus address, Pope
Francis recommended a work of
theology that “has done me so much
good” because it “says that mercy
changes everything; it changes the world
by making it less cold and more fair.”
That book is “Mercy: The Essence of the
Gospel and the Key to Christian Life”, by
Cardinal Walter Kasper. In May 2014, two editors
from Commonweal had the opportunity to sit down
and talk to Cardinal Kasper about his book and the
importance of mercy in the world today.

SMALL THINGS
This past week Youth Group enjoyed
the presentation by Fr. John Linden
and Dawn Hausmann on Theology of
the Body.....so much so that by
popular request the display of
materials was brought back for a
second week, so teens could get the
materials that interested them.
CALLED.
The FIFTH GRADERS are
learning about God's amazing
love and forgiveness through
the Divine Mercy
devotion. They watched a
short video about Saint
Faustina, and read a more
detailed story about how she
came to be given this devotion. Then the students
got the chance to make a decorative version of one
decade of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, to hang on their
wall or keep by their bedside. Finally, the class prayed
the chaplet together.
This month's CONFIRMATION SESSION is
affectionately thought of as "Speed Dating" - the
students get to meet a variety of faith-filled Catholics
and hear how the Holy Spirit has moved in their
lives. Our first session last week, we met Mr. Paul
Jarzynka, Mrs. Alison Stanley (pictured here) and
Deacon Jim Kasprzak.

MAGNIFIKID!
Bulk Subscriptions will be available again this year.
Magnifikid! is a wonderful resource for children
between the ages of six and twelve. In each month’s
packet, children will find a booklet of sixteen color
pages with the readings for each Sunday and the Holy
Days of Obligation. Each Magnifikid! issue also includes
the prayers of Sunday Mass, with explanations of difficult
words, a daily prayer suggestion for each week, and
many ideas for ways to live the meaning of the readings
at home.
Butter and Chocolate Lambs & Crosses
We will be selling butter and chocolate lambs and
crosses again this year after all Masses on Palm Sunday
(and during Holy Week in the Formation
Office). These make a very good way for you to
share your Catholic faith and traditions with family
and friends - if people ask, "Why a lamb?" you can
explain that Christ is the Lamb of God who gave His
life for the World! The rest of the
tradition is explained on a sheet you
will receive with your purchase! We
will also have some other fun and
educational items for Easter
baskets. Our sale goes toward New
Horizons for Children and their hosting program for
Eastern European orphans.
Purchased individually, a year's subscription to
Magnifikid! is about $36. Our goal is to get enough
families to participate so that we can get our bulk
subscription price down to $13 for the year....which
we were able to do last year. Each month you can
either pick your child's packets up at St. John or at
St. Thomas Aquinas. If you'd be interested in joining
in with our group subscription, please let us know.

robes for the infirm and blankets for babies which are

hooks (any size) or knitting needles that you would be

RCIA Update
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults
This past Sunday the catechumens/elect
celebrated the Second Scrutiny. They
have considered ways in which they need
to move away from the darkness of sin. They prayed
for a spirit of conversion and the light of faith. The
entire parish community prayed for them and were
reminded of their own need for ongoing conversion.
At the RCIA session, the elect, candidates, and their
sponsors prepared for the Third Scrutiny by
discussing the gospel story of the Raising of Lazarus
from Dead. They considered what is happening in the
world today and where the power of death is at
work. They asked what "stone" needed to be rolled
away from their hearts. They considered how they
might be "bound" by sin, addictions, prejudices,
fears. They asked what keeps them from moving
toward the freedom Jesus is offering them.
