Mark’s Remarks We have celebrated All Hallows Eve this past Friday and All Saints Day on Saturday, and this Sunday we commemorate All Souls Day. This Christian tradition for those of us in this hemisphere of the world follows the harvest. God’s own harvest of souls occurs for all of creation, especially humanity. We remember those who have died in our parish this year. Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Guest Author: Riley O’Shea Material Science and Engineering Thoughts of a senior: During my first few months in East Lansing I didn’t necessarily have God at the forefront of my thoughts, words and actions (something I still strive to grow in). Like many college aged men and women, I was searching for who I was and who I was becoming. I knew my faith had some role in that so I continued going to Mass on Sundays and praying before I went to sleep, the rituals my parents taught me as a child. Ignatian Discernment of Spirits Series Tuesday, November 4, 6:30-8:00pm Fr. John Linden and Dawn Hausmann from the Diocesan Vocations Team are offering a series on Ignatian Discernment of Spirits this Fall. Students are welcome to join us at Emmaus House, the white house across the street from St. John Student Center (320 M.A.C. Ave). Email [email protected] for more information. However, I struggled to find ways to be intentional about my faith. Joining the Men’s Group at St. John really helped with that and gave me a way to make connections with other Catholics my age, something I was lacking. These men and others invited me to St. John on Tuesday/ Thursday nights for Daily Mass and urged me to join the undergraduate retreat, things I would not have done on my own. During the 2012 Spring Retreat, by the grace of God I encountered the love of Jesus Christ in such an intimate and real way that, with my heart overflowing, I was brought to tears of joy. 'Pax' Romana: The Blood of the Martyrs is the Seed of Christianity (2nd-3rd centuries) Tuesday, November 4, 6:30-8:00pm, SJSC All college students and members of the Graduate Student & Young Professional Group are invited to join Fr. Tucker for the first session of a three week series on Church history. We will meet in room 25B. This grace filled moment left me thirsting for God’s love and called me to a deeper spiritual conversion. In the months that followed, I began to more fully trust that God had a plan for my life and for the first time I seriously considered the priesthood as a vocation God could be calling me to. Priesthood Discernment Group at St. John was there as a support by introducing me to priests and other college aged men also seeking God’s will. Graduate Student and Young Professional Group Discipleship Night on Thursday, 11/6 More recently, the faith that I have fostered through the Catholic Church served as my rock as I went through a very difficult time in my life last year. During this period, a simple prayer got me through: Jesus, I trust in you! Join us Thursday, November 6, at Church of the Resurrection at 6:00pm for praise and worship, Mass, dinner and drinks, and a talk focused on the pillar of Communion. The guest speakers this month are Randall and Therese Cirner, and their presentation is called "'Til Death Do We Part." St. John has truly been a home away from home for me in the past 3 years. I thank God for relationships I’ve made and fostered here, especially my relationship with the Lord! Robert Barron Religion, Spirituality and Health Even if you missed the first one, you can still join us this Monday evening at 7:00pm in Fr. Mac Hall. All are invited to attend this important and informative presentation on Thursday evening, November 6, at 7:00pm in McDevitt Hall at SJSC featuring Cindy Bergeman, PhD. The better we understand Jesus, the better we understand ourselves. But who was Jesus, this itinerant preacher, whom many called the Messiah? Some people pray for a healthy recovery when faced with a grave illness. In fact, faith can give people the strength to cope with sickness. But can it boost your chances of getting well? Using biblical insights and engaging stories, Father Barron affirms that we must see Jesus most clearly through the lens of the Old Testament. Through this presentation and discussion of Priest, Prophet, King, you will better understand Jesus, become more familiar with Scripture, and realize your own priestly, prophetic and kingly mission. This lecture focuses on the pathways through which spiritual and religious practices and beliefs may affect health outcomes, and the research issues that can limit our understanding of this important resilience resource. This special presentation is part of Notre Dame’s “Hesburgh Lecture Series” and is being sponsored by the Notre Dame Club of Lansing. This DVD Series will take place the next five Mondays, 7:00-8:30pm, through December 1, in Fr. Mac Hall. Questions? Contact Al Weilbaecher at 351-5460 or [email protected]. MOMS GROUP St. Thomas, St. John Let’s Talk About…. What Pope Francis Is Saying about the Economy Would you like an opportunity to sit and chat with other Moms? Every Thursday, the Moms Group meets at St. John, 9:30am-11:00am. The children gather in the nursery with a babysitter provided by the church and the Moms gather next door. Join us on Sunday, November 9, 7:00pm, in McDevitt Hall at SJSC to talk about this! Our time together will include prayer, scripture, what the media says the Pope is saying, what he has actually said, a couple of interpretations of what he has said, as well as time to reflect on and discuss all of this. If you would like more information, contact Ed Welch at [email protected]. PRAYERS FOR PRIESTS Please pick up a copy of the November prayers for priests. In addition to other Diocesan priests, we will be praying especially for our own Fr. Dan Westermann on November 6. It only takes a few minutes each day to follow our Blessed Mother's request to pray for our priests. Faculty/Community Book Discussion Group St. Vincent DePaul In the Gospel today, we hear the good news that when we keep our focus on God and serve one another, God exalts us! As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, please say a special prayer for the poor who have no one to pray for them 5 Our reading group will meet in November on Thursday, November 6 and 20, to discuss The Power of Parable: How Fiction by Jesus Became Fiction About Jesus by John Dominic Crossan. This book is a meaningful exploration of the metaphorical stories told by Jesus and the Gospel writers. We will cover the Prologue and Part I (pages 1-137) on November 6. We meet from 5:30-7:00pm in the Library at SJSC. Everyone is welcome to join us. There will be NO YOUTH GROUP this week (for the evening session only). Annie and Josh will be at the Diocesan High School Jamboree with a group of teens from our parish. We'll meet again as usual on November 9! Jamboree is a daylong event which brings together teens from all around the Diocese for fun, prayer, speakers, faith sharing, music and Mass. LEARNING BY HEART - Our second graders are preparing to receive two Sacraments Reconciliation, which they receive in February, and first Eucharist, which they will receive in May. Children should already know the Sign of the Cross, the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and Glory Be, but we also want them to learn the Act of Contrition. Of course, in the spring the great focus is on the Mass, and how to reverently receive Communion. CALLED. THINK AHEAD and be sure to schedule your holiday events so that your teen can attend the Epiphany Retreat at St. Francis Retreat Center, January 2, 3, and 4. A true retreat is an amazing opportunity to grow in faith and to listen to God speak. It also builds a sense of community and shared purpose like little else can do. Third Graders should learn the Guardian Angel Prayer, and should know the Nicene Creed which is prayed at Mass. The Guardian Angel prayer is quite easy to learn because it rhymes: Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love entrusts me here, ever this day, be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen. We'll gather late afternoon on Friday, January 2, and return after morning Mass and lunch on Sunday, January 4. This retreat is for all teens in our parish. ADDITIONAL CATECHISTS NEEDED - Due to many late enrollments, we've had to divide many of our classes which became too big within the first couple of weeks. Thanks to those who already came forward to help with Sunday evening preschool and Sunday morning first grade. Now we are anxious to find two new volunteers so we can divide the second grade on Mondays at 4:30. We try to keep our classes to under ten students if at all possible. CONFIRMATION - Young people are capable of great things. They are capable of thinking deeply about their lives and the purpose of them. This is the focus of both our Confirmation program and Youth Program to prompt and to give teens a chance to think about the big questions. It is beautiful to see how the teens in our parish respond to the opportunity to reflect deeply on questions such as free will and how to prevent ourselves from being enslaved by our culture. This month we considered this quotation from another young person - Joan of Arc: Why such small classes? We only have an hour and fifteen minutes together each week, and we want every child to be 100% engaged every moment. That can't happen when classes are too big - when people are waiting for "their turn" - that's when boredom can set in. And - it is really fun to teach a small group because then you don't have to cope with the behavior issues that come from inattention. “I know this now. Every man gives his life for what he believes. Every woman gives her life for what she believes. Sometimes people believe in little or nothing, and yet they give their lives to that little or nothing. One life is all we have and we live it as we believe in living it and then it’s gone. But to surrender what you are and to live without belief is more terrible than dying—even more terrible than dying young." We also need a volunteer of any age (a teen or grandparent would be great) who can speak Korean to translate for two boys in that Monday Sacramental Preparation class. Attention: Young Single Women (Ages 16-32) Drop everything and take a leap of faith. Spend November 8 and 9, 2014, in Ann Arbor with dozens of other young women and the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. Explore the answer to the question “Where is God calling me?” For more information visit sistersofmary.org. 6 Holy Jacks! Youth Group enjoyed Hang Out last week by carving pumpkins - but with a twist! Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Update This past Sunday the catechumens, candidates, and their sponsors gathered to consider the topic, "Discernment". At times each of us is faced with complicated or difficult decisions. Some of those decisions are directly connected to our relationship with God. "Discernment involves a sifting through the various feelings, motives, and attitudes to listen within for God's truth." (Foundations In Faith, Cycle B, p. 19) Discernment is the process by which a person discovers God's will. The process enables a person to distinguish between movements coming from God and impulses that are not from God. This type of listening can be done in the inner dialogue of prayer. It can also be done by finding a spiritual director, a competent guide with whom this conversation can take place. Finally, discernment requires humility and openness to God's call to us. This past weekend 24 people celebrated the Rite of Acceptance/Rite of Welcome. Through this ritual they were formally introduced to the faith community, welcomed in a specific way, and presented with the crucifix which is the primary symbol of the Christian faith. 9:00am Mass, left to right, front row: candidates Jacob Sturgeon, Fraol Galan, and Elizabeth Clement; Catechumens Kenneth Burch, Tia Burch, Kevin Cunningham, Trevor Muska, Ethan Santangelo, Samantha Stewart, Luke Stine, and Vanessa Stine. Can You Help? Each year, Cristo Rey provides a sit down Thanksgiving Feast. Waiting on the guests gives us another opportunity to show them respect and honor. It also allows for our elders to rest without having to juggle plates while standing in line. Cristo Rey also delivers meals to people. Lots of volunteers are needed to make all of this happen. People are needed to cook, package meals, deliver meals, and help with clean up. If you cannot help on Thanksgiving Day but would like to contribute turkey or ham, that is also a critical need. We remember our faithful departed, especially Jerry Borgen. My he now be welcomed by the Son whom God raised from the dead.
