Fifth Sunday of Lent
The Hour Has Come
Our readings today are filled
with anticipation. The days
are coming, Jeremiah
prophesies in today’s First
Reading. The hour has come,
Jesus says in the Gospel. The
new covenant that God
promised to Jeremiah is made
in the “hour” of Jesus - in His death, resurrection,
and ascension to the Father’s right hand.
The prophets said this new covenant would return
Israel’s exiled tribes from the ends of the world.
Jesus too predicted His passion would gather the
dispersed children of God. But today He promises
to draw to himself, not only Israelites, but all men
and women.
The new covenant is more than a political or
national restoration. As we sing in today’s Psalm, it
is a universal spiritual restoration. In the “hour” of
Jesus, sinners in every nation can return to the
Father - to be washed of their guilt and given new
hearts to love and serve Him.
In predicting He will be “lifted up,” Jesus isn’t
describing only His coming crucifixion. Isaiah
used the same word to tell how the Messiah, after
suffering for Israel’s sins, would be raised high and
greatly exalted. Elsewhere the term describes how
kings are elevated above their subjects.
Troubled in His agony, Jesus didn’t pray to be
saved. Instead, as we hear in today’s Epistle, He
offered himself to the Father on the cross - as a
living prayer and supplication. For this, God gave
Him dominion over heaven and earth.
Where He has gone we can follow - if we let Him
lead us. To follow Jesus means hating our lives of
sin and selfishness. It means trusting in the
Father’s will, the law He has written in our hearts.
Jesus’ “hour” continues in the Eucharist, where we
join our sacrifices to His, giving God our lives in
reverence and obedience - confident He will raise
us up to bear fruits of holiness.

Stations of the Cross

Did you know? The Way of the Cross is
chosen by many as part of their prayer of
renewal and reconciliation during Lent.
In the early and medieval Church, Catholics tried to
pilgrimage to Jerusalem “to walk the actual steps of
Jesus.” This, of course, was not possible for most people,
but it was always the ideal hope.
Saint Francis of Assisi, who also developed the idea of
having a Christmas Crib in each home, brought the
devotion of the Way of the Cross to people rather than
having them never be able to pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He
brought Jerusalem to them by developing the Stations of
the Cross for local churches.
The number of stations (or stops along the way of Jesus)
has varied over the years, (it is presently 14 stops) to
reflect on the suffering and death of the Lord. Now, many
years later than Saint Francis, the popular devotion is
prayed regularly in almost every Catholic Church during
the Lenten Fridays.
You do not have to even be in a church, Stations of the
Cross can be devotionally reflected and prayed in the
quietness of your personal space. You just need a
booklet to pray the journey.

bear much fruit for all who have been
willing to follow him through the
deaths of Lent, small or great, to the
light of the newly risen son. The
wheat harvest, ripened in that sun,
will yield bread for all the hungry. We who have been
fed on the life-giving Bread that is Christ can then in
turn feed the world in which we have been planted. Lent
and Easter are never only about the self but always
about the whole humanity to which we belong.

Diego Science and Engineering Fair on
March 25th in Balboa Park. The students
will present their projects in person to
judges on that day. Thanks to seventh
grade teacher, Mrs. Rita Blickenstaff for
all her efforts in preparing our students to compete at
this fair. Good luck St. Didacus students!

Being a disciple of Jesus involves both a
vertical and a horizontal dimension. It
entails a personal relationship with him as
well as a bond of unity with other disciples.
Discipleship means being united in heart
and mind with both Jesus and fellow
disciples, being part of a universal family.
Mary, mother and disciple, is at the heart
of that new family of God. With Mary, the
Church will always listen to God’s word,
ponder it with holy hearts, and, empowered by the Holy Spirit,
act on that word to bear fruit in the world.

The Solemnity of the
Annunciation
of the Lord

This solemnity recalls
the announcement to
Mary by the angel
Gabriel that she has
found favor with God and will bear the Son of
God. Their exchange is found in Luke chapter 1,
verses 26-38. When Mary asks how this is to
happen, the angel tells her the Holy Spirit will
come upon her and cites the unexpected
pregnancy of her cousin, Elizabeth, in her old
age, as a sign that nothing will be impossible for
God. This major feast, exactly nine months
before Christmas, was celebrated liturgically in
the East by the fifth century and in the West by
the seventh century.

Want to re-focus on building your relationship with Christ
during the remainder of Lent? Keep it simple and try the 1-1-1
plan. Focus on one sin, do one add-on and give up one thing.
You can change up your plan as often as you’d like.
One sin: Concentrate or focus on one sin or fault that is getting in the way of your relationship with God and with others.
One add-on: Do one positive activity that will deepen your
prayer and spiritual life. You can go do daily Mass, attend
Stations of the Cross, pray the Rosary or read a spiritual book.
The possibilities are limitless.
One give-up: Deny yourself something you really like or to
which you are attached.

Jesús present a en est a parábola, una
vez más, la lección fundament al del Evangelio ent ero, el punt o máximo del mensaje
de Jesús: el amor que se da a sí mismo, y
que por ese perderse a sí mismo, por ese
morir a sí mismo, genera vida.
Est amos ant e una de las t ípicas paradojas del
evangelio: perder la vida por amor es la forma de ganarla
para la vida et erna (o sea, de cara a los valores definit ivos); morir a sí mismo es la verdadera manera de vivir,
ent regar la vida es la mejor forma de ret enerla, darla es la
mejor forma de recibirla… Paradoja es una figura lit eraria
que consist e en una cont radicción aparent e: perderganar, morir-vivir, ent regar-ret ener, dar-recibir… Parecen
realidades cont radict orias, pero no lo son en realidad.
Llegar a darse cuent a de que no hay t al cont radicción,
capt ar la verdad de la paradoja, es descubrir el Evangelio.
Y est amos ant e el punt o alt o de la revelación
crist iana. En la nat uraleza, en el mundo animal sobre t odo, el principal inst int o es el de la aut o-conservación. La
nat uraleza animal est á cent rada sobre sí misma. Lo que
pueda ser cont rario a est a regla no es más que una excepción que la confirma.
El ser humano, por el cont rario, se caract eriza por
ser capaz de amar, por ser capaz de salir de sí mismo y
ent regar su vida o ent regarse a sí mismo por amor. La
humanización sería ese descent ramient o de sí mismo, que
es cent ramient o en los demás y en el amor. La parábola
que est amos reflexionando expresa un punt o alt o de esa
maduración de la Humanidad; t ant o, que puede ser considerada como una expresión de la cima del amor.
Si las semillas somos nosot ros, ¿a qué debemos
morir? Si, con el evangelio, creemos que no hay mayor
amor que dar la vida, que la ley suprema es morir como el
grano de trigo: para dar vida.
