We look forward to seeing you! LETTER FROM DEACON JOHN BETRAND Today is the 1st Sunday of Lent. Today's gospel tells us once again how Jesus went out into the desert and was tempted by Satan after his Baptism. He did this 40 days of fasting, praying and being alone to gain strength for his ministry ahead. This temping by the devil can be seen as a story about good verses evil and in this case the good wins. Mark's gospel today does not go into detail as to the tempting as do the other evangelist gospels. We know the story because we hear it totally 2 out of 3 years, but for us I ask what does the beginning of Lent mean? Lent for us is not only about praying more or fasting. Lent is about us remembering the consequences of sin, (our in particular) and the price Jesus paid for our salvation. Sincerely yours in Christ, Deacon John Bertrand RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 2nd Grade Parent Dates February 24, 25, 26 – First Communion Parent Meeting during child’s scheduled class time. RCIA: Rite of Sending and Rite of the Elect “Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God” Romans 15:7 The first Sunday of Lent, February 22, 2015 begins a very Holy time in the life of our Church and particularly in the life of our RCIA catechumen Brittany O’Brien. At the 4PM Mass on February 21st here at Nativity of Our Lord Church, Brittany along with her sponsor will take part in the Rite of Sending. With the blessings of our Pastor and our church community we send her to the Cathedral of St. Francis in Metuchen on Sunday for the Rite of Election. This celebration marks the beginning of the final weeks of preparation for those seeking to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. During this Rite, Brittany’s name will be read in the presence of Bishop Bootkoski and she will sign her name in the Book of the Elect along with all those in our diocese seeking to enter the Catholic Church. Our catechumen is encouraged to follow Christ with a greater readiness. It is a time for personal as well as communal prayer. Please continue to pray for Brittany O’Brien, and all those involved with the RCIA process. CRS Rice Bowl: Rice bowls were distributed after Mass last week. Don’t forget to download the CRS Rice Bowl app by visiting http://www.crsricebowl.org! Remember, your Lenten sacrifices change lives. Hungering for a Better Life Our journey with CRS Rice Bowl begins in Tanzania, where a simple soybean is changing lives! What actions can you take this Lent to change lives—at home and around the world? Do You Need A Helping Hand With Minor Tasks Around The House? It has come to our attention that some senior communities charge a rather large fee to replace light bulbs and perform other small household tasks. Do you need help replacing batteries in a smoke or carbon monoxide detector, opening and closing ceiling vents, or hanging pictures? There are parishioners who are willing to help in these situations. Please contact Esther Wolff by phone on 732-521-6019 or via email to [email protected]. Caring Meals: The Caring Meals group provides two great services. First, we deliver soup to our homebound parishioners. Previously we delivered soup only during the winter months, but our soup became so popular that we have decided to cook and deliver year round. Also, our group provides short-term help to parishioners who are recuperating from an illness or hospital stay with deliveries of home-cooked meals to help alleviate the additional burden of meal preparation while you heal. You do not have to be disadvantaged to benefit from this service. Nativity of Our Lord is a family and we care about you and your recovery. If you like to cook or know of someone who could benefit from either of these two services, please call Maryanne Sheerin at (609) 409-3378. We have several volunteers who are eager to help. Prayer Shawl: Our next meeting is on February 24, 2015. We meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month through June. If you would like more information, please call Dorothy Kopil at (609) 655-8138 or Greta Wieczorkowski at (609) 655-4262. Guatemala Scholarship Fund: : “If you give a person a fish, you feed them for a day. If you give a person a fishing pole, you feed them for a lifetime.” We’ve all heard that adage. We would add, “If you give a person an education, you will help the whole community.” The Guatemala Scholarship Program improves the lives of the individual, the family, and the whole village. Not many folks can claim that they have done that with $1/Day! We will also link you with a specific child, so you can monitor that student’s progress. We thank the parishioners who’ve already helped the children in our “Sister Diocese” of Santa Rosa. Make a child’s dream come true. Checks ($30/month or $360/year) can be made to Nativity of Our Lord with Guatemala Scholarship in the memo line. Elder Care: Do you need assistance with shopping periodically? Are you seeking a responsible person to sit with someone in need of supervision for a brief time? Do you require help with minor household chores? Please call Diane Malloy at 609-235-9480 to schedule this service.
