Applications are invited for the post of IT Officer I within the University IT Services. Applicants
should be in possession of a relevant diploma qualification OR at least two (2) years’ work
experience relevant to this post.
Applicants should also have:

The ability to communicate successfully with all levels of computer users;

Good communication skills, both written and verbal (in English);

The ability to work both on own initiative and in a team and be able to adapt to different
work environments;

The ability to prioritise and schedule work;

Experience on installation, use and support of one or more of the following computing
platforms: MS Windows Vista/7/8, UNIX, Mac;

Experience on installation, use and support of end-user applications such as MS Office,
Google Apps, Web browsers, antivirus software, personal firewall and end-user security
issues and data backup practices;

The disposition to learn new skills on the job and to pursue further studies and training as
may be necessary.
Additionally, applicants should ideally have:
o Basic programming/scripting skills;
o Experience on TCP/IP networking;
o Support experience of lecture room technologies (e.g. interactive boards, connecting user
devices to data projection facilities, clickers).
The salary attached to the post is €17,308 rising by annual increments of €375 up to €19,558.
On completion of five years service in this grade, the appointee will, on satisfactory performance,
be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €408 up to a maximum
of €20,891. After a further period of two years, the appointee will on satisfactory performance be
entitled to move on to the next band with annual increments of €447 up to a maximum of
€22,362.

Further Information
IT Services manages the IT infrastructure of the University and offers a range of facilities and
services to assist members of staff, students and departments with their IT-related needs.
The role of IT Services staff is to proactively support both generic and specific IT requirements
for teaching and research in academic departments and/or IT business needs of support and
administrative departments. They proactively liaise with end-users, IT Services staff and other
stakeholders in terms of supporting these requirements and to deliver improved effectiveness
and efficiency through the use of IT across the University.
IT Services staff may be required to operate from the main IT Services site on campus, from
other sites on campus (e.g. Administration), or other University sites (e.g. Valletta Campus,
Gozo Campus, Mater Dei Hospital and Junior College), in order to service the various University
departments and as may be required by the University.
Main Duties & Responsibilities may include:
 Provide technical and operational support on:
o
computing platforms e.g. MS Windows Vista/7/8, Mac platforms;
o
application software e.g. MS Office, Google Apps, Web browsers;
o
corporate systems (including Student, Library, Finance and HR information management
systems);
o
end-user devices including desktops, laptops, tablets and telephony;
 Record and manage all faults, queries and incidents on issue tracking software;
 Investigate and resolve software/hardware problems in consultation with other IT Services
staff as appropriate;
 Service and support IT facilities including computer training rooms, computers in research
laboratories, open access workstations, printers, scanners, wireless network access,
videoconferencing and learning technologies in lecture rooms (e.g. interactive boards and
lecture capture equipment). Additionally, the post holder is required to assist with the setting
up and upkeep of such learning spaces;
 Act as point of contact with end-users and departments being serviced, be proactive to
disseminate information to users and in turn collect feedback from users for improvement of
IT services;
 Assist with purchasing of hardware and software, including liaison with suppliers;
 Monitor stock levels of equipment and consumables and ensure that equipment loaned is
kept maintained and in good order;
 Undertake routine preventive measures and assist in threat and vulnerability assessments,
followed by appropriate remedial action, to ensure optimal IT systems security;
 Assist back-office technical operation of IT systems and services, including installation,
configuration, documentation and operation of servers, backups, networks etc;
 Assist with the implementation of environmentally-friendly IT policies;
 Assist with end-user documentation of IT systems and services;
 Supervise student lab attendants and assist other IT Services staff taking over their
responsibilities as may be necessary;
 Any other duties commensurate with the grade, as required by senior IT Services staff and
respective head of service team to which the post holder is attached.
IT Services staff placed with specific University departments may be assigned duties on a dayto-day basis by these departments but will be required to coordinate with IT Services senior staff
in terms of servicing the departments and will ultimately report to the relevant head of service
team within IT Services and to the Chief Information Officer & Director of IT Services.
The post holder must be willing and able to work on an 'on-call' basis should the need arise.

The appointee is expected to work:
a. on a full-time basis, and will not be allowed to engage in any other gainful employment
without the permission of the Council; and
b. at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.
Selection Board Process
The selection process will follow the document “Guidelines for Members of Selection Boards in
the
Recruitment
of
Administrative,
Technical
and
Industrial
Staff”

In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following
selection criteria for the selection process:
a. Relevant academic qualifications;
b. Relevant work experience;
c. Aptitude and suitability; and
d. Performance in interview.
The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of six months, and to the provisions of
the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University which are now or which may hereafter
be in force.
