Hort Corner
Seasonal news from our Horticultural Team!
2015 Tulip Forecast:
Horticulturists: Alex Hoefs & Ben Habanek
• 10,000 tulip bulbs have been planted around our Education & Visitor Center!
• This year’s theme is The Name Game and our goal was to plant as many
varieties of tulips named after people as possible – some of the tulip names
include, Aladdin, Ronaldo, Rosalie, Uncle Tom and so many more!
• You’ll enjoy warm tulip colors like red, orange, yellows, pinks and creams.
Butterfly Garden – Redesigned!
Horticulturist: Ben Habanek
• We are redesigning this favorite garden spot! Changes to be complete
by early summer.
• The new look will feature an assortment of colorful, nectar producing plants
that are particularly attractive to Monarch butterflies during their late
summer migration.
• A mixture of miniature plants and modern cultivars will also be featured.
Annual Garden:
Horticulturist: Alex Hoefs
• This year’s theme is Tropical Splendor and
it features big, bold, bright and inviting colors.
• The primary plant of choice is the beautiful,
popular and weather resistant, Impatiens.
Trial Garden:
Horticulturist: Jessica Cloninger
The garden will showcase all 20 winners
of the 2015 All-American Selections (AAS).
• Check out the spreading Sunpatiens (Impatiens)
known for its beautiful salmon-pink color.
• For the first time in AAS history, Pak Choi is a winner. The Bopak Pak Choi will be planted in our AAS Vegetable Winner bed! This plant matures early and tastes great!
• The dark red Petunia, Tidal Wave, will be on the
market in 2015! This beautiful flower blooms
continually, never fades and won’t take on a dingy
appearance as many petunias often do.
The Herb Garden
Horticulturist: Peggy Gibbs-Zautke
• This year’s Herb Garden theme is the Fairy Garden.
• The 2015 Herb of the Year is Savory.
• We will be growing 3 varieties of this herb: winter, summer and lemon.
