Term 1 - Dates to remember ......................................... 1
A note from the Principal ................................................ 1
Harmony Day is celebrated throughout Australia on 21st
March each year since 1999. On this day we are
encouraged to celebrate the cultural diversity of our
country. It’s a day of cultural respect for everyone who
calls Australia home. We celebrate the cohesive and
inclusive nature of Australia. It is a time to reflect on
where Australia has come from, while also recognising
the traditional owners of this land. It is also the United
Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination.

communication, stimulating two-way conversations. At
the same time it encourages self-respect and respect of
others.

Since 1945, 7.2 million people have migrated to
Australia. We identify with approximately 300
ancestries and today around 45 percent of Australians
were born overseas or have a parent who was born
overseas. We speak approximately 300 languages,
including Indigenous ones, and four million of us speak
a language other than English at home.

PAWS LUNCH
Last Day of Term 1
On Friday we will wear Orange and as a special Aussie
treat, students will be allowed to wear thongs. We are
also holding an Aussie BBQ. I just hope we can cook 600
sausages in time!!! All sausages are Gluten free! We are
1
using the kind donations of thongs to mark out a large
Australian map. Thanks to several parents who made
bulk thong purchases to fill our stores. All dollar
donations will support our Ethiopian student, KIBATU,
again this year
Congratulations to our St Mary’s PSSA swimmers on
their efforts at Homebush this week. While we may not
have many moving to state level we certainly saw
plenty of PBs (technical swim talk) and a great deal of
determination and team effort. I felt very proud to be
part of this great school. Well done once again!
RECIPE FOR HARMONY:
We wish Mrs Richmond a speedy recovery. Pauline has
managed to break her leg and given herself a nasty
head wound. She will unfortunately be away until next
term. We thank Amy Bray for stepping in to look after
KR during this time.
A good serving of all these ingredients on a daily basis

Let us remember that every day should be a “harmony
day”!!!
A note from the Deputy Principal
It’s hard to believe that Term 1 is almost ended. So
much has been organised for our students. We have
had Ripples present a Water Safety talk to Stage 1 and
Stage 2 students; Claymation workshops have been
busily engaging our Year 4 students, Harmony Day is
happening this Friday and there is still more to come
before the end of term!
May I remind you that School Photos are being held on
Tuesday, 24th March. Envelopes have been sent home
for class and individual photos. Photos can be paid
online. Don’t forget to return all envelopes before or on
the Tuesday. Family photos will also be taken on the
th
day. Come to the office before 24 March if you would
like to purchase a family photo and pick up your
envelope.
Just a reminder that students need to be aware of
STRANGER DANGER procedures as they travel to and
from school. Never travel alone, never talk to someone
you do not know and always go straight home by the
most direct route
Playgroup is on again tomorrow 19th March with Mrs
Swadling running a mini BOOT CAMP. Please make sure
appropriate clothing and shoes are worn. So come
prepared to join in the activities. Thanks to those mums
that made play dough last time, a great hit with the kids
and to Mrs Tatafu for our exciting Easter craft.
In Term 2 we will begin the Sports in Schools program
for social skills and cooperation at the school. This
program has been organised as part of our PE, Health
and Personal Development program. Each family will
get a flyer to inform you of the program. Also you can
see what this is about in this newsletter.
Our first STEPS Gala Day will be held this Thursday 19th
March.Fingers crossed that our hundreds of students
travelling to 3 different venues will have a great day
competing and representing their schools and teams.
Many thanks to Mr Samuels for his organisation of this
event.
May I remind parents who pick their child up by car in
the afternoons, please go to the car zone for pick up
and drop off. Please, no parking in Bus Zones. In the
afternoons it has been noticed many children are
walking and running past the staff car park without
looking. It is dangerous if a car is coming out. The Staff
have talked to the students about this, as well as our
rule of waiting inside the fenced area in the afternoon.
No child should be waiting near the carpark gates. If
parking is difficult, perhaps your child could be picked
up at the back gates.
A huge THANK YOU to Mrs Anderson for all the hours
spent in organising a School, District and then Zone
Swimming Carnivals. Hundreds of names, times and
information between schools and staff went into each
of these events. A mammoth effort when Paula is not a
full time teacher!!! I have been amazed by her skills and
patience over the last couple of weeks.
The Department of Education and Communities
requires schools to publish Rules of Engagement for
Digital devices for Staff, parents and students. Blackwell
Public School has a policy stating this. It has now been
2
inserted on the P&C Facebook page. This will also apply
to emails and other digital devices used by our
community. It has been put in our newsletter for all to
read.
Kate Meredith from Educate to Communicate teachers
will suggest her as a Speech pathologist. Parents are
asked to ring Kate or another outside service to make
appointments.
Let’s enjoy what the rest of Term 1 has in store –
Harmony Day, Privilege days, Easter.

Deputy Principal
How well is your child using language?
P&C News 2015
By the time a child reaches their sixth birthday language
should be well developed.
Annual P&C Easter Raffle
The P & C Easter Raffle to be drawn at assembly on
Monday, 30th March. We are asking our school
community to help support this event by donating
Easter eggs, baskets or anything Easter related for us to
put together as prizes. Donations can be handed into
our school office from today onwards. All donations big
and small will be graciously accepted!
Here are the key indicators of school readiness in
language skills.





Speech that is easily understood with the
majority of speech sounds produced correctly.
Complex sentences in expressive language with
few grammatical errors and a wide vocabulary.
They will understand a wide range of concepts,
be able to answer / ask questions and follow 23 step directions.
Emerging literacy skills-awareness of rhyming
words, the understanding that words are made
up of sounds and have familiarity with handling
books.
Ability to attend to adult directed tasks,
cooperative pretend play and independence
with basic dressing skills.
Fine motor skills-correct pencil grip and the
ability to draw a person and basic shapes.
th
Raffle tickets have gone on sale from Monday, 16
March 2015 and are available at the front gate. Sales
will be from 8:30am - 9:15am in the mornings and
2:30pm - 3:15pm in the afternoon. We are also asking
for volunteers to help with the ticket sales so if you can
spare a little time in the mornings or afternoons then
we would love to see you. Any help will be appreciated!
Thankyou
P & C fundraising committee
P&C Election BBQ Fundraiser 2015
Date: Saturday, 28th March 2015 Reminder
The ability of a child to manipulate speech sounds is
also an indicator. If your child is experiencing difficulties
as these, you are best advised to see a speech
pathologist.




That time of the year where our local community needs
to elect new local government members.
Difficulty with recognising the same sounds at
the beginning or end of a word.
Difficulty blending multiple sounds together to
form a word
Difficulty discriminating between sounds and
letters ie. Knowing what the letter is called and
the sound it makes.
While sight word reading is important for
reading fluency, progression to more difficult
and unfamiliar texts requires a flexible sound
and sight word reading system.
Blackwell P & C will be holding a BBQ Fundraiser on the
day to feed all the hungry voters!
Duration of BBQ will be 7am to 4.30pm which includes
setup and cleanup. We will be needing numerous
helpers on the day to help cook, serve, setup and
cleanup. A roster has been setup and if there are any
volunteers that could help throughout the day could
you put your name down on the roster and the
allocated timeframe you would like to help. The roster
can be found on top of the P & C Suggestion box
located in the office.
Any time you can volunteer would be greatly
appreciated.
If you have any concerns regarding the Speech of your
child please see your child’s class teacher. Our teachers
also approach parents if they notice a child is having
difficulty with language. As we work in partnership with

Parent Help Needed
Our school has just purchased new updated Reading
books for Stage 1 and for Home Reading. These books
need to be covered in plastic. It is a mammoth chore to
cover all of these books at school along with the other
procedures in organising the books.
If you have a bit of time at home at night or on the
weekend, perhaps you can help contact these readers.
If you would like to help out in doing this please fill out
and return the slip below to Mrs Wilson. The books and
contact will be left in a bundle for you to collect from
the Office. We will give a pack of 6 books at a time.
Covered books can be returned to the Office. We

Rules of Engagement
In joining our community on Facebook, Blackwell Public School follows both the DEC Code of Conduct and Facebook
terms and conditions.
Students
Please note that the Facebook terms and conditions state that no one under the age of 13 years should have a
Facebook profile. Therefore, any primary students who 'Like' or comment on the Blackwell Public School Facebook page
will be deleted and reported immediately.
Comments Policy
Blackwell Public school encourages interaction from Facebook users but is not responsible for comments or wall
postings made by visitors to the page.
Comments posted also do not in any way reflect the opinions or policies of Blackwell Public School.
BPS asks that people making comments on the page show their respect for their fellow users by ensuring the discussion
remains civil, especially since Facebook allows individuals 13 and over to join.
Comments are also subject to Facebook’s Terms of Use and Code of Conduct.
Remember that your name and photo will be seen next to your comment, visible to the tens of thousands of visitors to
the page.
We reserve the right, but assume no obligation, to remove comments that are racist, sexist, abusive, profane, violent,
falsehoods or are wildly off-topic, or that libel, incite, threaten or make ad hominem attacks on BPS students,
employees, guests or other individuals.
We also do not permit messages selling products or promoting commercial, political or other ventures. Facebook
encourages all users to utilise the “Report” links when they find abusive content.
Friending Staff on Facebook
Please note that the Department of Education and Communities has this advice for teachers ‘Friending’ parents on
Facebook:
The line between your professional and personal life could become blurred making it difficult to manage your
professional relationship with the parents when that becomes necessary.
You also need to bear in mind that becoming a Facebook friend with a parent could result in their children getting access
to your account as well.
You also need to be mindful that you need to be careful what you say on Facebook if you have parents as friends as
comments made online can be misunderstood and could result in parental complaints made to your principal.
In short, please do not ask to friend a member of staff on Facebook as refusal often offends.

Introducing.... Mrs Turnbull (KT)
This is my 7th year working at Blackwell P.S and I am so excited to be
teaching Kindergarten where everyday is full of love, laughter and learning.
Prior to Blackwell, I worked at Oakville P.S in the Hawkesbury for 8 years
teaching all grades K-6.
I feel so lucky to have the 2 best jobs in the world, being a teacher and
being a mum! My amazing husband Tim and I have beautiful twin daughters
who are almost 4 years old and in August this year we are expecting
another little bundle of joy. On the weekends, we love spending the day in
the city, getaways to the coast and family movie nights. I also enjoy
cooking, reading, and musical theatre, but I especially love teaching and am
very lucky to be working with Mrs Wrigley again this year in KT.
Introducing.... Mrs Wrigley (KT)
I have been a teacher for over 35 years and I started my career at
Lethbridge Park and Hebersham before moving to Bennett Rd and finally
coming home to Blackwell Public School. I have been married to a beautiful
man for 35 years and have 2 amazing children who have become teachers
themselves. I love spending time at the beach, reading and enjoying time
with my wonderful family – especially my 2 adorable grandchildren. I
absolutely love teaching and am enjoying another great year on the Kinder
Turtles with Mrs Turnbull.
IMPORTANT DATES….
Kindergarten Easter celebrations will begin in Week 10 with our Privilege Day on Wednesday 1st April. The day will have
a Visual Arts focus and children will rotate around the Kinder classrooms completing various Easter tasks such as
constructing Easter baskets, iPad art activities etc.. Please note this year that all Kinder students will make their Easter
hat at school. We are asking if you could send in supplies to assist your child’s class, such as felt shapes, stickers,
feathers, cotton wool and glitter. We will be making our hats in class with our buddies that week.
On Thursday, 2nd April we will be holding our Infants Easter Hat Parade. You are welcome to join us for a picnic recess
at 11:00am on the day and following recess at 11:30am, our parade will take place in the hall. We look forward to
seeing you all there. Students can wear mufti on this day.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE …
There have recently been some cases of head lice reported in Kindergarten classrooms, we ask that you please be
vigilant in checking and treating your child’s hair as required.

Belongings
Just a reminder: all students’ hats, jumpers, bags, drink bottles and lunch boxes require labelling to ensure they

jacket for your child so they can stay warm.

Hello from Mr Farag
I love the community spirit here at Blackwell, which makes me feel I belong to my extended family. I admire this

STAGE 2 NEWS
What a busy start to Term 1, 2015 and here we are in Week 8 already. We still have a lot to do before our well
deserved Easter break.
This week we congratulate our regional swimmers who participated at Homebush on Monday. Year 4 children
have enjoyed completing Claymation and have produced some interesting and individual film clips. Thursday is
our Gala Sports Day, so don’t forget hats, sunscreen and plenty of water. Finally on Friday all of Blackwell are
joining together to celebrate Harmony Day. All students will be offered a sausage sandwich for lunch. Remember
to wear ORANGE!
During Week 10, Year 3 and Year 4 children will construct a diorama showing the habitat of a native Australian
animal. The children have been asked to bring a shoe box to school and will also need to start thinking about a
variety of materials they will need and even some animal models. A note went home earlier this week regarding
our special ‘Privilege Day’.
th
School Photos take place on Tuesday, 24 March this term. So get spruced up and don’t forget to bring your
envelope on the day.
Homework is a valued part of school life at Blackwell Public and does include your child’s class presentations. We
encourage all children to participate and your support to ensure your child is prepared is appreciated.
Stage 2 Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest excursion. A note has gone out today with the newsletter
about the Stage 2 Excursion. Permission note and payment to be returned to the school office by Friday, 24 th April.
With just over two weeks to go, let’s put our heads down and enjoy it.
A Little About Stephanie Coard
After growing up in the beautiful Blue Mountains I spent nineteen years travelling and working overseas.
After the birth of our son George, my husband and I returned to Australia to bring him up. He is now
fifteen and towers over me. My family and I enjoy cooking, watching movies, reading, trips into Sydney
and road trips. Part of every weekend is spent with Harry, our dog, at George’s football matches during
the season.
I have worked at numerous schools and have spent eight enjoyable years teaching at Blackwell. I would
say that one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is enabling children to develop into independent
thinkers and valued members of the community.

Please be aware that if a student receives a blue or white slip for poor behaviour, that these slips are copied and
sent home to you as a behaviour notification. Please sign these and return them back to Mr Woolard, Stage
Supervisor.
STAGE 3 CAMP
Lots of children have been bringing in their notes and money for the Canberra, overnight camp. The amount can be
paid off in instalments. Please remember to clearly write your name, class and amount on the envelope.
EASTER CHALLENGE
On the Wednesday and Thursday of the final week stage 3 will be competing in the 24hr egg challenge. On the
Wednesday afternoon students will be given an egg in a clip locked bag. The egg must remain in the bag and
remain with the student for 24 hours. Let’s see if Stage 3 can complete the 24hr egg challenge.
REMINDER STAGE 3 PARENTS
