NEWS CELEBRATING A CENTENARY OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATING YOUNG WOMEN Issue 4 – 20th March, 2015 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents, Students and Friends of OLSH, Collaboration across the community, working together to raise awareness of the important role which kindness plays in our school, is the message I shared with students this week. Fair play and a sense of justice are at the very heart of our values. We all have to learn that it sometimes takes courage to be kind. With today being ‘Bullying NO Way’ day we are saying ‘say no to bullying’ and promoting ‘say yes to kindness’. IMPORTANT DATES Monday, 23rd March—Monday, 2nd April Year 12 Exams Monday, 30th March 3.45—7.00pm Year 7 Interim Reports Parent/Teacher Interviews Thursday, 2nd April Last day of Term for Staff and Students Monday, 20th April Staff and Student Return Year 11 Exams begin Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32 I attended the CDSA Public Speaking Finals last week at Christian Brothers Lewisham and out of over 400 students across the Sydney Archdiocese in each year group, Shiarni Rodwell of Year 9 and Emma Murphy of Year 12 reached the final. They were wonderful ambassadors for the College and both spoke with great clarity and sophistication. Emma Murphy Year 12 and Shiani Rodwell Year 9 qualified for the final of the CSDA Public Speaking competition. Your feedback is invaluable and will assist us in our present and future planning for the College. What a magnificent Open Day we had last week. The school was shining; the students proud of their school, teachers presenting engaging and creative lessons for our primary school visitors and our visitors were in awe of the energy and the breadth of our curriculum. It is one of our annual highlights where we get to share with others why Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is such a great school. Let us look forward with Hope and Gratitude. Mrs Jenny Fowler College Principal FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL YEAR 7 PARENT TEACHER EVENING A reminder to Year 7 parents that the Year 7 Parent Teacher Evening will be held on Monday, March 30 between the times of 3.45 to 7.00pm. Appointments are now open on our Sentral Parent Portal. At this evening, Interim Reports can be collected which will give an indication of your daughter’s initial progress in Year 7. We look forward to this opportunity to discuss with you the first term of your daughter’s OLSH experience. YEAR 12 EXAMS Year 12 and their teachers have been carefully planning towards their half yearly exams which begin on Monday. Whilst this is an important time for each Year 12 student, it is vital that at home, students have a balance of exercise, good nutrition and plenty of sleep. Each 2 unit subject is of equal importance and over these last few days of intense preparation, the more organised and confident students can be, the better they will feel as they walk into the exam room. Best wishes to all of our HSC Candidates. STUDENT ATTENDANCE A major focus of 2015 has been making the most of every minute of school. At the beginning of the year we outlined our revised policy on lateness where students who are late 3 times in one fortnight for whatever reason will be issued with a detention. These detention letters are posted home each fortnight. We ask that all parents support us in helping each girl to be at the College for the entire day each day. We have purchased a student swipe-in kiosk at our office. This requires students to swipe in or out if they are late, sick or need to leave early. Students need to use their library ID cards for this purpose. Students were informed at Assembly on Wednesday of the need to keep their library cards on them at all times. OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER 36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033 PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465 P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: [email protected] w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL (continued) OPEN DAY Our Open Day last Tuesday week was a magnificent showcase of our College. We had over 1000 visitors through the College on Open Day and Meet the Principal Evening. Our students were magnificent on this day as they led the way in escorting guests, helping teachers deliver lessons for Primary students, performing and catering for our guests. Thank you to all staff and students involved. We are proud of the involvement offered by parents on this day and thank all parents who gave of their time on the BBQ which catered for about 900 people. It is a pleasure to work with parents who seem to have a good time together whilst helping with College events. HIGHLIGHTING LEARNING There has been much to celebrate on the learning front in recent weeks. Out of over 400 students across the Archdiocese in each year group, Shiarni Rodwell of Year 9 and Emma Murphy of Year 12 reached the final 10 students in the CSDA Public Speaking finals. Our Year 11 Mock Trial team won the legal case against Brigidine College on Monday and we continue to have increasing numbers making use of our extended library hours each Monday and Wednesday until 5.30pm. Year 12 are to be congratulated on the focus that they have given to their study by staying back until 7pm each evening this week. Over 150 students have made use of this. The settled and serious approach that students have shown to their first round of assessment tasks across the College have highlighted to the staff an increased level of student engagement in their learning and augers well for the remainder of the term. Congratulations to all students for persisting with their learning this term. On this occasion we remember and celebrate the Angel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she was pregnant with the Son of God! The Angel greets Mary with the now-famous words ‘Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee!’ I always imagine that Mary, at that stage an unmarried teenager, would have been somewhat overwhelmed by the angel’s appearance, but still she answers: ‘Let it be done to me according to thy word.’ Appropriately, the Annunciation is celebrated exactly nine months before Christmas! We will mark the Solemnity of the Annunciation at OLSH by praying the traditional Marian prayer, the Angelus. This ancient prayer intersperses an account of the incarnation with the prayer Hail Mary. Considering the special connection that we have with Mary at OLSH, the Angelus will be a familiar and comforting way for us to ask for Mary’s help and guidance. The full text of the prayer is below. Leader: The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary, Response: And she conceived of the Holy Ghost. Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with Thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Leader: Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Response. Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with Thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Leader: And the Word was made flesh. Response: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with Thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Leader: Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. Response: That we might be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Leader: Let us pray, Pour forth, we beseech Thee, Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that, we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Response: Amen Mr Andrew Martin Leader of Religious Education and Mission OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER 36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033 PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465 P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: [email protected] w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au YEAR 7 REPORT To say that Term 1 is busy for Year 7 students would be an understatement. Apart from the usual new beginnings involved with high school - timetables, classes, assessment tasks etc. - students have been on camp, celebrated Mass with Champagnat Catholic College and will attend a dance tonight. Amazingly, I have never seen a more enthusiastic group of students. They have participated wholeheartedly in all activities from the swimming carnival to the “The Show”. Year 7 students have taken all these challenges in their stride whilst being cheerful and positive and showing true OLSH spirit. At the Opening School Mass, Year 7 students were presented with a Bible by a Year 12 student: “You are and always will be an OLSH girl”. The profound meaning of these words is becoming more and more evident as the term progresses. Our charism calls us to be on earth, the heart and hands of Christ. At the Ash Wednesday liturgy Sr Anchilla shared with us, the work of the Sisters at Bakhita Village in South Africa. Year 7 have listened eagerly to the talks about our Chevalier family given by Sr Philippa and Sr Lorraine. This has enabled us to understand our call to share Jesus’ love with everyone. They have shown a natural affinity for this mission in the way that they relate to both their teachers and their peers and their involvement in fundraising activities for those in need. The concern and kindness Year 7 show others affirms that they truly are and always will be OLSH girls. Mrs Lyn Blundell Leader of Pastoral Care, Year 7 OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER 36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033 PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465 P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: [email protected] w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au NUMERACY Numeracy helps us use mathematics effectively to meet the general demands of day-to-day life at home, at work and in society generally. It also helps us to learn and make sense of the world. Numeracy skills are the basic mathematical skill sets required by any pupil in primary and secondary education. These numeracy skills are designed to help with the more advanced levels of mathematics that pupils will encounter during their school lives and also into their adulthood. During Term 1 OLSH Year 7 students work on consolidating and extending their whole number skills. This is done through games, group work and targeted computer usage. The girls will extend this knowledge to rational numbers (fractions, decimals, etc) during Term 2. Looking at the History of Number encourages the girls to appreciate the beauty and complexity of our own number system. During Term 3 the girls discover different strategies that help to solve problems. This is done with concrete materials and often involves group work. Term 4 is spent looking at Numeracy in the Kitchen and how Maths and Art are related. We also spend time focusing on weaknesses identified in Naplan and extending the students who have achieved in the top bands. “W hen we did group work, if you were not sure how to do something, a friend would help you understand” - Sophia, Year 7 “I enjoy doing times tables quizzes, it helps me to remember them” Charlotte, Year 7 “I enjoy doing the number group work. It is challenging and I like working with a partner”, - Grace, Year 7 Mrs Sue Hamilton Numeracy OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER 36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033 PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465 P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: [email protected] w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au LEADER OF LEARNING—INNOVATION, TEACHING AND LEARNING Dear Parents, We like to keep you updated on how we are stretching the minds of the students here at OLSH through innovative ways. This week I’d like to show you the 3D printer that the College has invested in to align with the industry skills required today. The main benefits of this resource is to enable students to problem solve and to design, therefore fostering creative and critical thinkers. This technology will enable students to test the aesthetic, ergonomic and functional properties of their designs with a solid model rather than just a virtual model. I look forward to sharing with you, later in the year, some of the students’ design projects. Parents can also often find themselves lacking in information about Mobile Phones for their children and whether the benefits outweigh the risks. Mobile phones can be a fun way for your children to interact and stay “connected”. There are many benefits to having a mobile device such as the variety of applications, social networking, instant messenger and so on. However, all of these things also come with risks, so I have included for you some advice on how to stay in control with your child's smartphone. This information has been obtained from http://www.thinkuknow.org.au/. If you have any further questions please contact me at [email protected] Mrs Anna-Louise Jones Leader of Learning—Innovation, Teaching and Learning OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER 36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033 PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465 P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: [email protected] w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au HOW TO STAY IN CONTROL - MOBILES What are the risks? Many parents may be concerned about the large bills that young people can create on their mobile phones, but there are other risks associated with the use of mobile phones. Mobile phones can be used for up-skirting or down-blousing which are covert means of taking photos of the female anatomy. Similar to this is the practice of young people taking sexualised photos of themselves and sending them to their current partner. This is, in fact, creating child pornography if the person is under the age of 18 and it is a Commonwealth offence. This has also been referred to as “sexting” Mobile phones can also be the medium in which cyber-bullying takes place. This might involve sending insulting or threatening text messages, sending unpleasant picture messages or using mobile devices to spread hurtful rumours. Smart phones allow users to download apps for a variety of purposes. Some of these may be inappropriate for your child and there are some steps you and your child can take to use apps safely and responsibly. For more information, check out our page on app safety. How can young people stay in control? Phone numbers should only be given to friends and you should never give out someone else's number without their permission. Think twice before taking an inappropriate photo of yourself or someone else on your mobile phone. Ask someone before taking a photo of them with your mobile phone. Don't use your mobile phone as a tool to use for cyber-bullying. If you receive an inappropriate image on your mobile don't send it around to your friends, delete it. Think carefully before downloading an app. http://www.thinkuknow.org.au/ OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER 36 Addison Street, Kensington NSW 2033 PO Box 837 Kensington NSW 1465 P(02)9662 4088 F(02)9663 5252 E: [email protected] w: www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au YEAR 12 EXCURSION TO KELLOGS On Friday 6th March Year 12 Food Technology visited the Kelloggs Factory at Botany to discover how food manufacturing is used to create Kelloggs Corn Flakes.
