Provost’s Distinguished Lecture Series The Cunning of Uncertainty Helga Nowotny Former president and founding member of the European Research Council and professor emerita of social studies of sciences with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Tuesday, April 7, 2015 3:30–5:00 p.m. Fulton Center, 6th Floor Boardroom Arizona State University at the Tempe campus Please join Helga Nowotny, a pioneer in the social studies and theory of science, founding member and former president of the European Research Council, for a talk about “The Cunning of Uncertainty.” Nowotny has published path-breaking work on transdisciplinary research, and the social context in which knowledge is produced and how it is subsequently used by society. She is the author of more than 300 articles in scientific journals and author, co-author or editor of 20 books, most recently “Naked Genes: Reinventing the Human in the Molecular Age,” (with Giuseppe Testa), MIT Press, 2011. She has a Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia and doctorate in jurisprudence from University of Vienna. She is also a professor emerita of social studies of science from the ETH Zurich in Switzerland, whose researchers have included 21 Nobel Laureates. There will be a public reception at 3:00 p.m., followed by the lecture at 3:30 p.m. Seating is limited. Paul Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.
