Please join Helga Nowotny, a pioneer in the social studies and
theory of science, founding member and former president of
the European Research Council, for a talk about “The Cunning
of Uncertainty.” Nowotny has published path-breaking work on
transdisciplinary research, and the social context in which
knowledge is produced and how it is subsequently used by
society. She is the author of more than 300 articles in scientific
journals and author, co-author or editor of 20 books, most
recently “Naked Genes: Reinventing the Human in the Molecular
Age,” (with Giuseppe Testa), MIT Press, 2011. She has a Ph.D.
in sociology from Columbia and doctorate in jurisprudence from
University of Vienna. She is also a professor emerita of social
studies of science from the ETH Zurich in Switzerland, whose
researchers have included 21 Nobel Laureates. There will be a
public reception at 3:00 p.m., followed by the lecture at 3:30 p.m.

Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy, and senior research associate with the
J. Paul Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.
Heinrich Meier, a political philosopher and director of the Carl Friedrich von
Siemens Foundation, Germany, professor with the University of Munich and visiting
professor with the Committee on Social Thought with the University of Chicago.
