SACUA members and selected committee chairs. The training
will probably take place during a four-day period in late
May.

of mandatory retirement; Department of Public Safety

The report from the Legal Services Task Force is
expected to be submitted to SACUA within the next two weeks.
The U of M Flint faculty is considering unionizing. It
is not clear that they will be able to establish a
bargaining unit independent of the Ann Arbor and Dearborn
faculty.
FACULTY GOVERNANCE ISSUES
Thorson will contact the committee chairs to see if
they would like student support for their committees next
year.
The charge to the Academic Affairs Advisory Committee
(aaac) was discussed. The Provost would like to see aaac
take on a significant issue. A SACUA member suggested aaac
focus on the consequences of the elimination of mandatory
retirement.
Some key issues related to the elimination of mandatory
retirement include: tenure, morale, impact on junior
faculty and hiring of new faculty. SACUA should involve
many different committees in the undertaking of such issues.
Another key issue is the assessment of teaching and
administrative work. Academic assessment could be
considered as a possible central theme for 1993-94.
It was suggested that Senate Assembly decide this
spring whether or how to expand the pool of candidates from
which SACUA nominees are selected. Thorson will prepare a
list of ideas that have been suggested to be reviewed at the
next SACUA meeting.
OLD BUSINESS
t i v e dinner hosted by President

Appeals and the Michigan Union Board of Representatives and
for chairs of the Student Relations Committee and Tenure
Committee.
