Our Clergy Letter this month is from Heather Cooper
Dear Friends,
As I write this the season of Lent approaches, as you read it we will be in the middle of Lent.
What does Lent mean for us?
For many it’s just about giving something up - chocolate, biscuits, coffee ( that I would find REALLY hard!).
However, more seriously, Lent is a time of preparation for Easter. Historically the Church used this
time to prepare candidates for baptism and entry into the Church on Easter Day.
It was a time for teaching and self - reflection and preparation for a big step in life.
Whether we are believers or not, we all have times in our life when preparation is important. Think
of the hours of hard work and revision young people put in to prepare for GCSEs and A-levels. The
hours of practice a musician or actor needs to perfect their craft. The same can be said of any sport
or skill. Preparation matters.
What about life?
Parents try to prepare their children for adult life, but at some point we all have to take
responsibility for our own lives, our own choices and decisions. In a busy and pressured society
with all the demands of caring for family, working or looking for work, keeping a home, it seems as
if there is little time to prepare for anything?
Sometimes it is good to create some space in our lives to reflect on who we are, what we do, the
choices we are making or that face us. It is good to take time to reflect on the things that have made
us the people we are today.
This month I am going to a reunion at the school I went to. This year the school celebrates its 50th
anniversary. It will be interesting to meet up with people I haven’t seen since we left school in the
1970s and see what everyone has made of their lives in the nearly 40 years since we left.
It is occasions such as special birthdays, anniversaries, landmark events such as a new baby, that
give us reason to pause and reflect.
Every year the Church marks the season of Lent which offers us time for reflection and time to take
stock. May this year offer you all space for yourselves - just to reflect on your life today, and maybe
give thanks to God for the gift of life.
Every blessing,
Heather Cooper

New Year, New Songs,
New Singers, New You?
Did You Know, Pewsey Male Voice Choir was
formed in 2006 and now has over 20 members.
As the name suggests, our members are from the
Pewsey area. We perform around 4 concerts a year
to give something to our local community and
charities. We are a sociable group and amongst
other activities, we are planning to attend a music
workshop at;
The Bruce Arms Easton Royal in June.
As 2014 gives way to 2015, the choir's focus
switches away from the Christmas and seasonal
songs to the new programme for the coming year.
Picking up new songs and learning them from
scratch is always such an exciting and challenging
time for everyone in the choir that it makes this
the ideal time for new recruits to join up ... you will
be on exactly the same page as the rest of us!
Oh,,, and you know how good singing is for your
general health and wellbeing don't you? ... so why
not make a New Year's Resolution that we will
help you keep!
If any of this whets your whistle, please visit our website: http://pewseymvc.org.uk/ for further details

The vast majority of dog owners are very careful to clear up
after their dogs and they are to be applauded for that. HOWEVER there are a few thoughtless and inconsiderate owners

On the subject of rubbish please put your domestic rubbish in

Mr Turner
Focusing on JMW Turner's later years, Mike Leigh directs
this beautifully drawn portrait of the
artist's eccentric and complicated life, and brings to life
the spirit of the Romantic age in which he
lived. Timothy Spall delivers a majestic performance ,
conveying both Turner's quicksilver
intelligence and his coarseness of manner, in possibly
the best performance of his long and varied
career.

The 33rd Marlborough Brandt Lent Lecture
Thursday 5 March 2015 8.00pm
Baroness Cox, Founder
CEO Humanitarian
Aid Relief Trust
The Memorial Hall, Marlborough College
(by kind permission of the Master)
Admission free – retiring collection for MBG and HART
The focus of Baroness Hart’s lecture will be on the work of HART, supporting partners on frontlines of faith and freedom, who always inspire with their indomitable courage, resilience, resourcefulness and amazing 'multiplier effect' of
the relatively meagre resources HART is able to provide.
“I would like to 'invite' the audience to 'travel with me' to meet some of these inspirational
people in countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Nigeria, Burma and the virtually unknown
little land of Nagorno Karabakh.
We work with people in conflict or post-conflict regions who are largely off the radar screen
of international media and major aid organisations suffering oppression and persecution whatever their faith tradition.
Often they are trapped behind closed borders suffering from repressive regimes who deny
access to major aid organisations, so we spend some of our time crossing borders nofficially
- and shamelessly to provide aid and advocacy for people who are unreached, unhelped and
unheard."
Baroness Cox
Volunteer Deputy Director Required for the Marlborough Brandt Group
The Marlborough Brandt Group is heading in a new direction. The arrival of piped water and electricity supplies to
Marlborough’s linked community of Gunjur in the Gambia allows us to shift our focus to supporting new business
start-ups and helping existing businesses there to grow.
In future our current director Nick Maurice will concentrate on supporting our business advisers and partners in
Gunjur. This leaves a gap in our resources and opens up what we believe is a tremendously interesting and
rewarding volunteering opportunity.
We are looking for a Deputy Director to work alongside Nick. Our ideal applicant is likely to be a self-starter with a
background in management and with a real interest and / or experience in engaging with people of different
cultures. If you have these qualities and could fit two rewarding days a week into your current commitments we
would very much like to hear from you.
To find out more about this opportunity please go to www.mbg.org. For an informal chat about the position contact
the office 01672 861116. Please send your CV to Nick Maurice [email protected] by 30 April 2015.

NEWS FROM THE PLAIN
Walking Works!
Are you looking to the New Year as an opportunity to Increase
your physical activity and improve your health?
Inactivity now rivals smoking as one of the nation’s biggest health
problems and is responsible for 17% of early deaths in UK and 6%
globally.
Being inactive can increase the chance of
developing cancer, heart disease or having
a stroke by 25-30%!!
We could prevent 37,000 deaths a year simply by
walking regularly.
Yes, walking has been established as a key activity to conquer
many health and physical problems in addition to its beneficial effects upon mental well being.
Training Area Newsletter warns us that, in
addition to firing around the Larkhill Impact
Area, there was, unusually, live firing from
Salisbury Plain East on 3 rd and 5th February
firing, quite safely, across the Avon Valley
onto Larkhill. I doubt if anyone noticed
because the wind has been predominantly
from the north, taking the noise away from
us. Unfortunately their Newsletter always
arrives by mail too late to be included in the
next month’s Messenger.

ORGAN FUND UPDATE
We thought we should give you an update on the church organ as many of you will be wondering
what has happened.
First of all thank you to everyone who helped with the fund raising last year. We raised £5,700.
We are going to do the repairs in two phases. The first phase will be to replace the blower box,
mend the broken pedal, and refurbish the whole of the pedal board. Christopher Evans-Tipping has
been working hard in the background on behalf of the PCC, arranging for Organ Repair firms to
visit the church, and getting quotes. We have now accepted a quote and the firm have been asked to
carry out the work as soon as possible. We hope the work will be completed in the next few
months.
The cost of this work is between £3000 and £35000.(which we have The next phase will be a
complete restorative clean which will cost between £10,000 and £12,000. If we could raise £5,000
this year, Christopher would be in a position to apply for a grant for the rest. It would be great if we
were successful, so LET'S NOT STOP NOW. With all your help I don't see why we shouldn't match
last years total or even exceed it. If anyone has ideas for fundraising, or wants to hold an event
large or small, please just get in touch. EVERY £1 counts.
We will definitely be holding an auction again and also a HORSE RACE NIGHT. With many
thanks, Jackie and Pam.
NORTH NEWNTON
While preparing for Bishop Edward's visit to St James' in December, it was noticed
that the pulpit was unstable...we could see daylight between the slabs of stone! We have been lucky to
engage a stonemason, at short notice, to restore stability. Yet another reminder that these lovely churches need constant care...and money, to keep them going for our communities.
We have a vacant slot on the church rota for flowers and cleaning in August. Neither is arduous; simple
flowers and dusting / sweeping that can be done by one or several helpers. Might you volunteer...and,
perhaps, ask a friend? Please either put your name on the list in the church porch or contact Jennifer
851925. We'll be meeting at St James' on Saturday, 14th March at 10.30 for our spring clean and would
love anyone to join us to help; just bring your duster for a happy, productive morning!
Thank you to all who look after St James'.

WOODBOROUGH CHURCH NEWS
Our Rector held the first of our new “Families @ 4” services on 1st February – it was great fun with songs and
activities. A big thank you to all who helped both before and during the service, especially
for the exciting tea – it all went! The next service will be held on 12th April, the Sunday after Easter at
the usual time – please come and enjoy a fun half hour followed by a delicious tea. Everyone is welcome to come
and join in, not just those who live in Woodborough.
You will probably read this during Lent and we shall shortly be planning for Easter – nature is
helping, because there are Aconites and a few Crocus out in the Churchyard at the beginning of
February as I write; and there should be plenty of spring flowers available by Easter.
Your PCC has its next quarterly Meeting on 3rd March and the main points will be covered in the next
Messenger.
Please can you note in your diaries that our annual meetings, the APCM, is on Thursday 16th April at
