Health Alert: The Kitsap Public Health District has issued a health alert due to an outbreak of pertussis (whooping cough) infection. Pertussis is a serious disease that can strike at any age, but it is very serious for infants. The majority of pertussis cases have been reported in school-aged children, mostly in the Bainbridge Island and North Kitsap school districts. However, we have seen cases in other parts of the county and expect the number of cases to grow. Kitsap Public Health is requesting your assistance in helping to reduce the spread of pertussis. Here are some steps you can take: Stay home if you are sick; keep sick children home from school See a doctor if you or your child has a persistent cough and other symptoms of pertussis Cover your coughs and sneezes and wash your hands frequently Make sure your children have had the recommended doses of the pertussis vaccine (DTaP) Talk with your physician about the pertussis booster (Tdap) Please see the following links to learn more: Joint KPHD/CKSD Memo to Parents KPHD Community Health Alert CDC Information for Parents Fact Sheet / (Hoja informativa para los padres) Thank you for your help keeping children in our community safe and healthy!
