Community Outreach Partner
Courting Kids
For more than 20 years, Courting Kids has worked with
one goal in mind: teaching inner city youth the game
of tennis, while having fun! Due to the success of the
program Courting Kids is now not only available to inner
city youth on the Charleston peninsula, but to West
Ashley and Johns Island youth as well.
Courting Kids works with tennis instructors from
the Charleston Tennis Center, local pros and even
collegiate players to teach youth ages 5 – 17 the
fundamentals of tennis, the importance of teamwork
and leading an active life. The program also empowers
participants to build self-esteem and aim for personal
successes. By providing low cost tennis lessons,
Courting Kids hopes to reach youth who otherwise
wouldn’t have the opportunity to learn this lifelong sport,
and some of the group volunteers as part of the Family
Circle Cup Ball crew.
Participants who attend regularly learn and improve
their tennis skills with many going on to play in high
school, and even some at the collegiate level. In
addition, participants who play consistently at an
above average level can become part of the Courting
Kids Future Stars programs that provides them with
specialized instruction to increase their skills.
For the third consecutive year, the Family Circle Cup
has chosen Courting Kids as its official community
outreach partner. The tournament makes an annual
contribution of cash and donations totaling $50,000
in support for this important charity, including tickets
for Courting Kids participants to attend the Family
Circle Cup. In 2013, additional funds will be raised for
Courting Kids during the Family Circle Cup with contest
with a chance to win tickets to the US Open.
The Family Circle Cup is proud to support Courting Kids
and their efforts to teach the youth of Charleston tennis.

Family Circle Tennis Center
Since opening in the spring of 2001, the Family
Circle Tennis Center has consistently brought first
class entertainment to the Charleston community on a
year-round basis. Beyond the Family Circle Cup, this
facility has hosted a number of key events that have
brought worldwide exposure to Daniel Island, the City
of Charleston, and the State of South Carolina.
The Family Circle Tennis Center is constantly
welcoming new members to their tennis community.
Within the FCTC there are more than three hundred
memberships, totaling five hundred players. Among
those players there are around one hundred tennis
teams that use FCTC as home base. The center
offers thirteen clay courts and four hard courts. All
of these courts are lighted for night play. Members
also receive reserved seating during the Cup and
can enjoy many tournaments and tennis socials
throughout the year.
Members can also enjoy the fully stocked pro shop
featuring Nike, Adidas and much more brand name
apparel and equipment. Additionally, the Tennis
Center offers racquet stringing services and there are
locker rooms for the member’s convenience.
The FCTC runs many different tournaments
each year. This year the facility is hosting the 11th
annual Dunlop Junior Tennis Championship. Other
tournaments on site include, Daniel Island Challenge,
Quickstart Jr. Tournaments, South Carolina Combo
Championship and the Holiday Classic.
Offering more than just tennis, the Family Circle
Tennis Center is the perfect venue for activities
including concerts, camps, cultural festivals, and other
athletic events. Many top musical acts have appeared
in Family Circle Stadium, which has received glowing
reviews as Charleston’s premier outdoor arena and is
considered the perfect setting for a concert under the
stars.
6
In 2009 the Instinctive Tennis Academy (ITA)
arrived at Family Circle Tennis Center. The ITA
provides FCTC with programming for all ages. The
academy offers, 10 and under academy, utilizing our
permanent thirty six foot courts. There are separate
junior, advanced junior and adult academies. The
Elite Junior Academy trains top level juniors with
academics on site. They also offer a variety of clinics
and camps on site for beginners to advanced juniors.
The ITA is the #1 Tennis Academy in Charleston,
SC. They offer an eye-coach eye-hand training
system. The academy sees over 250 students on a
weekly basis.

Champions Review
Rosie Casals (1973)
Casals has the distinction of being the tournament’s
first winner, and her winner’s check of $30,000 was the
biggest single check won by any female professional
tennis player in 1973. Her match against Nancy Richey
in the final was the first women’s tennis match seen on
the NBC network.
Conchita Martinez (1994-95)
Martinez won the singles Championship four years
after her 1990 debut. The following year, she became
one of only six players to win the title again as
defending Champion. Martinez is also one of eight
women who have won the Family Circle Cup more
than once.
Chris Evert (1974-78, 1981, 1984 and 1985)
In 1974, Evert made a spectacular debut beginning a
string of victories that led to five consecutive singles
titles (1974-1978), a record that still stands today.
She then won another three titles in 1981, 1984 &
1985, bringing the count to eight. Evert has amassed
numerous Cup records including most titles won, most
matches won, most consecutive singles matches won,
fewest games in a singles final and most consecutive
sets won.
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (1996)
At the 1996 Cup, Sanchez-Vicario became the third
woman in the tournament’s history to win both the
singles and doubles title. She holds the tournament
record for most consecutive years seeded (14) and
most consecutive years played (16).
Tracy Austin (1979-80)
Austin followed Evert with back-to-back titles in 1979
and 1980. When she won the coveted trophy in 1979,
Austin became, and remains today, the youngest
Family Circle Cup Champion at 16 years, 4 months.
Martina Navratilova (1982-83, 1988, 1990)
Navratilova won the first of her four Family Circle
Cup singles titles in 1982. That year, she became the
second player to win both the singles and doubles title
in the same year.
Steffi Graf (1986-87, 1989, 1993)
In 1986, fans caught a glimpse into the future of Graf’s
tennis career when she beat reigning Champion Chris
Evert to win the singles title. It marked her first pro title
in her career. Graf won the Cup again in 1987, 1989
and 1993.
Gabriela Sabatini (1991-92)
This young Argentine followed Graf to earn the coveted
Cup title. Sabatini, who made her professional debut
at the Cup in 1985, won the crown in 1991 and then
again in 1992.
Martina Hingis (1997, 1999)
Nicknamed the “Swiss Miss”, Hingis won her first Cup
title in 1997. On the first day of the tournament, she
became the youngest No.1 ranked player at 16 years,
6 months, and 1 day. Her final against Monica Seles
in 1997 was the first Championship to be decided by
a third set tiebreak. Playing 31 games, the final match
broke an existing record of most games in a singles
final (27).
Amanda Coetzer (1998)
Coetzer scored the biggest victory of her career when
she captured the 1998 singles Championship. She
battled through some tough matches, but with the
victory, set a record as the lowest seeded winner in
the tournament’s history. (No. 4 seed)
Mary Pierce (2000)
Pierce captured her first Cup title over Arantxa SanchezVicario, dropping only 11 games. Losing only one game
in the finals, Pierce tied the record for the shortest singles
final (56 minutes), which has since been replaced in 2010,
fewest games played in a singles final (13), and fewest
games lost in a tournament (12).

Champions Review
Jennifer Capriati (2001)
At her first Cup final in 1990, Capriati found herself opposite
legend Martina Navratilova, the oldest Cup finalist. Despite
a loss, Capriati set numerous tournament records, including
youngest finalist (14 years, 9 days). In 2001, Capriati
captured the title over Martina Hingis in three-sets.
Iva Majoli (2002)
For the first time on the WTA, a Tier I final was decided
between two unseeded players. Majoli defeated Patty
Schnyder, becoming the first unseeded player to win
the Cup Singles Championship.
Justine Henin (2003, 2005)
Henin’s victory at the 2003 Cup over World No. 1 Serena
Williams excited sports fans everywhere. After capturing
the 2005 title over Dementieva, Henin became the fourth
lowest-ranked Tier I winner, at No. 43.
Venus Williams (2004)
Defeating two-time Champion Conchita Martinez in
the final, Williams became one of five women to win the
Cup in a debut appearance.
Nadia Petrova (2006)
Petrova defeated Patty Schnyder in a three-set battle
claiming her first Tier I victory and the American clay
court sweep.
Jelena Jankovic (2007)
Jankovic notched the third and most impressive WTA title of
her career defeating Dinara Safina in two sets.
Serena Williams (2008, 2012)
Williams defeated No. 9 seed Vera Zvonareva in a
fierce final to claim the 35th Anniversary Family Circle
Cup title. Four years later, Willaims returned to the
Family Circle Cup to cruise to victory again in a short,
58-minute final def. Lucie Safrova 6-0, 6-1.
17
Sabine Lisicki (2009)
History was made as Sabine Lisicki notched the first
WTA singles title of her career, defeating Caroline
Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4. Lisicki, the No. 16 seed, joined
Conchita Martinez in becoming the lowest seeded
player to reach the finals, also setting a mark as the
lowest seeded champion. Both Lisicki and Wozniacki
reached the Cup final in their tournament debut.
Samantha Stosur (2010)
Stosur set records as she stormed to her second WTA
title, defeating Vera Zvonareva 6-0, 6-3 in the final in
just 52 minutes. No. 4 seeded Stosur became the first
Australian to win the singles title at the Cup.
Caroline Wozniacki (2011)
Wozniacki's third trip to the Family Circle Cup was the
luck she needed as she won this Premier title for the
first time, surviving some tough early challenges, but
easing past Elena Vesnina in the final, 6-2, 6-3.

Media Tennis Tournament
The popular Family Circle Cup Media Tennis Tournament is a long-standing tradition started by Bud
Collins as the Venerable Chartreuse Gallagher Press Tournament, which ran for 25 years beginning
in the early days of this event on Hilton Head Island. While the format and trophies have changed
through the years, the event remains a great social outing for the working media who spend a week
tirelessly covering this event.
A long-standing tradition continued as the Family Circle Cup held their annual Media Tennis
Tournament on semi-final Saturday, a tradition that started some 40 years ago.
