Bipartisan Criminal Justice Reform
America’s criminal justice system is a human, social, and financial
disaster. The U.S. is home to 5% of the world’s population, but
incarcerates more than a quarter of the world’s prisoners. More than two
million people are behind bars in the United States. As a nation, we spend
$80 billion per year on incarceration, but nearly half of those released
return to prison within three years of release.
The Bipartisan Criminal Justice Summit, co-hosted by Newt Gingrich, Pat
Nolan, Van Jones, and Donna Brazile, will be a key turning point in
launching the bipartisan movement to reduce the prison population in
America.
With Americans of all political backgrounds beginning to question our
failing prison system, the moment is ripe to capture the public imagination
with a bold vision for reform. The #cut50 Summit will elevate proven
reforms that are smarter, cheaper and more efficient as well as tools that
evaluate prison services and hold government agencies accountable.
