senior leadership team with increasing responsibilities as schools become increasingly autonomous.
Our BA (Hons) Leadership and Management takes your existing learning and experience and helps you to translate it into credentials that are recognised
universally, as well as providing a unique platform from which to move on to the next stage of your own personal career development.
The Audience
This programme is aimed at School Business Managers, Head Teachers, Administrators, Finance staff, and school senior leaders.

Leadership
Being able to lead, develop and support individuals and teams is vital in
enabling others to maximise their contribution, and for achievement of a
school’s vision. This is the focus of this module. It aims to consolidate and
develop your understanding of the theories and principles of effective
leadership and examine the differences between management and
leadership of schools. Emphasis will be placed upon leadership competences
as outlined in the School Business Management Competence Framework.
The module will begin with a one day study block and be followed by 10
on-line sessions. Assessment will be individually negotiated and linked to
your specific school context.
Contemporary Management Practice
This module is intended to develop your ability to analyse your school with
particular emphasis on understanding contemporary issues in effective
school management and associated organisational behaviour and
subsequent ability to propose and implement recommendations for change.
The module will begin with a one day study block and be followed by 10
on-line sessions. Assessment will be by means of a co-designed case study
focusing on contemporary management issues faced within the school
environment.

The Programme
Working in partnership with education professionals, Newcastle Business
School at Northumbria University has developed the BA (Hons) Leadership
and Management, an innovative work-related degree programme designed
to build upon your skills as a School Business Manager.
For anyone having completed appropriate level four or five awards you
would complete the following programme.

Learners who successfully complete this 12 month programme will be
awarded a BA (Hons) Leadership and Management.
Induction to Northumbria University and Academic Practice
Development
The first day will focus upon introducing you to your fellow learners and the
programme team, give a detailed introduction to the learning resources
available, introduce modules and assessment and provide supportive
guidance in relation to academic practice and how to effectively complete
assessment and achieve your highest possible potential. You will be also be
able to meet and get to know fellow learners.
Professional Project
This final integrative project will draw on existing and prior learning from and
allow you to complete an individually negotiated study in a contemporary
school leadership or management topic. We will introduce the project in day
two of induction and you will then be individually supervised throughout
the year.
Understanding Strategy
This module is intended to develop your awareness and critical evaluation of
strategic analysis and management by assessing the impact of the external
environment on schools and the wider education sector. The module will
develop your understanding of the changing education and government
reform environment and develop your ability to respond through
formulating appropriate school strategies. The module will begin with a one
day study block and be followed by 10 on-line sessions. Assessment will be
individually negotiated and linked to your school context.
