ATTENTION
Effective May 2015 the Town of Wawota will begin Curbside Recycling through Regens Disposal Ltd.
All residents will receive a blue cart, similar to the current carts being used for waste disposal. This will be a biweekly service, with pickup every second Monday. All acceptable recycling material will be placed in one cart.
Acceptable recyclable material includes paper fiber materials, containers, and glass.
The Town of Wawota is excited to offer single stream recycling to our residents as it allows for simple and
responsible recycling.
The cost of this service will be approximately $7.00 to $10.00 per month. With successful recycling, future waste
disposal service may also be changed to bi-weekly pickup which would reduce residential costs.
The community green bins currently being used for recycling will be removed most likely the week of April 27, 2015.
At this time each residential cart will be delivered. The first curbside recycling pickup will be Monday, May 11, 2015.
Regens Disposal Ltd. will be contacting all commercial property owners to discuss their recycling options.
In the near future, all Town of Wawota residents will be receiving more information on Curbside Recycling directly
from Regens Disposal Ltd. If you have any questions or concerns after you have reviewed this information, please
contact the Town Office or Regens Disposal Ltd. at 1-855-202-7209.

WANDERING THOUGHTS
(as we see them)
Yikes – read where the deadline is one day early for the next two weeks – best get our act together! An early
delivery should also cause some confusion – News-in-a-Minute apologizes for any disruption caused in your
schedule by this temporary change!
The Ladies’ World Curling finished on the weekend with Canada having to settle for the silver. They did have a
“good run” – 2008 was the last time Canada claimed the gold. With the time change, some “diehard fans” did
stay up ‘til 3 a.m. to catch the final – yes, they walk amongst us!
The Forum was a “hub of activity” on the weekend. The 2nd Annual Sled Hockey Tournament took place on
Friday evening and Saturday – hear reports there were 18 teams entered – the average age of players was from
10 years to 6 x that age! Organizers surpassed their goal of doubling last year’s success.
Then on Sunday night, the Flyers played host to the Bienfait Coalers in Game #4 of the best of 7 Big Six League
finals. It’s great to see such good crowds at these games – there isn’t a lot of hockey left at this time of year so
travelling many kms to a playoff game is not uncommon.
Reading any local paper that carries any agricultural news, we see lots of bull sales being advertised – and that’s
NO BULL! Farmers are at last getting good returns for their product – even though we consumers complain as
we check the prices at the counter.
We took in the Annual 4-H Steak Night on Saturday – a delicious meal and evening of great entertainment. The
highlight we found most amusing was the “budding auctioneer” as he accepted bids of which table would get
their supper first! Job well done – organizers and participants!
And the weather! For those who are counting, how many snowfalls have we had since the crows came back?
Or should we say, how many more can we expect? One forecaster was heard to have said that we won’t really
have spring to appreciate ‘til June – he was asked to leave town!!
On the subject of the weather, while we were getting this early edition ready for print, the
snowflakes seem to be getting bigger and heavier … and wetter. Big question – should
we shovel/snowblow this latest snowfall or just let the sun do our work for us?
Be sure to mark April 8th on your calendar – the 3rd Annual Lions Fish, Fly &
Fry. This event has almost doubled in popularity in its two year history, so
this year is expected to be no different!
While on the topic of fish – three “acquaintances” from the north recently returned from a fishing expedition from
“farther north”. Of course we expected the usual fish stories – but when they told us they had a 30 lb plus on the
line but couldn’t get it through the hole. Our question … “How big was the hole?” We were threatened!!
BEWARE …. Next Wednesday is April Fool’s Day !!
As well as people playing pranks on one another on April Fools' Day, elaborate practical jokes have appeared on
radio and TV stations, newspapers, web sites, and have been performed by large corporations. In one famous
prank from 1957, the BBC broadcast a film in their Panorama current affairs series purporting to show Swiss
farmers picking freshly-grown spaghetti, in what they called the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest. The BBC were later
flooded with requests to purchase a spaghetti plant, forcing them to declare the film a hoax on the news the next
day.
You asked ??
Question: Why doesn’t the Department of Highways mark the worst (deepest) potholes as
well as the others?
Answer: They only have stakes for markers that are 24 inches long!

WHAT IS IT ?
(Last week we printed a picture of an item on display in
the museum. History of item:
This is a Porcelain Bedpan – used in hospitals and
for bed-ridden patients - used late in the 19th into
the 20th century. Very old utensils, before the late
nineteenth century, were made of metals such as
pewter, brass and some urinals were made of
glass. Porcelain, china, and even pottery were used
in the late nineteenth century. Even empty these
are quite heavy. The spout is to facilitate washing it
out.
This Bedpan was donated to the museum by Doris
Fisk in 1981 and can be viewed in the medical
display on the 2nd floor of the museum.
(This week we are printing a picture of an item on
display in the museum. It is also displayed in the
doorway of the Museum. If you know what this item is, or
if you have used it, tell us about it. Information about
this item will be in next week’s NiaM.

It is not what they read but what they remember

THANK YOU
A HUGE ‘thank you!” to the current staff of Deer View
Lodge and the Medical Clinic for organizing the
Retirement Party at the Drop In held in my honour. I
greatly appreciated my family and co-workers coming
to help me celebrate my retirement. Thank you so
much for all the wonderful cards and gifts I received.
A special thank you to Marg Shire for all of her input.
Also, a special thank you to the ones that travelled a
distance and to the ones that attended after their shift
of work. I was especially delighted to have my very
first co-workers Eunice Rogers and Marie Jensen
attend.
I started working over 35 years ago in Wawota
Hospital and finished my career working in DVL. I
have many fond memories of the patients I helped
care for over the years. It has been a privilege to have
worked with numerous co-workers from every
department of both the Hospital and DVL. My working
career was greatly enriched by the kindness and
support from these people. It was wonderful seeing
everybody again and enjoyed a great visit. I miss
spending time with all of you.

ALONG THE FLYERS’ BLUE LINE
The Flyers travelled to Bienfait on the 19th to
play Game #3 of the Big Six League
Championship. The host team got off to a “jump
start” – scoring three unanswered goals in less
than four minutes. The Flyers “soon rallied”
however not enough to win – final score 5 – 4.
Games #4 was played at the Forum on Sunday
evening with another good attendance. The
Flyers couldn’t seem to get by the Bienfait
goalie even though they tried 44 times – final
score was 3 – 1 for the visitors.
50/50 winner was Jason Pryce collecting $590 –
he generously gave $90 back to the Flyers –
thank you Jason.
Stay tuned for the Game #5 results…
A FISHY TALE
Once upon a time there was a brilliant sturgeon
on the staff of the Community Health Fishility.
In fact he was one of its flounders. Wiser than
salmon, a fin fellow, he would never shrimp from
his responsibilities. In sort, he was happy and
successful and always whistled a happy tuna.
Then one day, a patient – a mere whipper
snapper – told the sturgeon that his medical
theories were full of abalone. He trouted all
over town telling people that the sturgeon’s
treatments had made him more eel than before.
Finally, he conched the sturgeon with a
malpractice suit.
The sturgeon realized he was in a real pickerel.
The board demanded his oyster and chased him
off the staff. But because the case smelt to high
heaven, the judge finally denied the plaintiff’s
clam, whereupon the board tried to hire the
sturgeon back. Alas, he had started hitting the
bottlenose pretty hard and the end of our shad
tale is that the sturgeon finally wound up on
squid roe.
Buoy! Isn’t that a fine kettle
of you-know-what?
