TENANTS REGARDING SNOW AND ICE
REMOVAL
Please be advised Section 181 of the
Highway Traffic Act reads:
No person shall deposit snow or ice on
a roadway without permission in
writing so to do from the Ministry or
the road authority responsible for the
maintenance of the road. R.S.O. 1990,
c. H.8, s. 181.
Please be further advised that under
By-Law 6-88 “USE OF THE STREETS,
HIGHWAYS AND SIDEWALKS AND
PREMISES ADJACENT THERETO”:
• The owners and occupants of
buildings within the Town of
Deseronto shall clear away and
remove snow and ice from any

sidewalks on the highways in front of, alongside or at the rear of such
buildings within 24 hours of the accumulation thereof.
The owners and occupants of buildings within the Town of Deseronto shall
clear away and remove all snow and ice from the roofs of any buildings
which may be located in such a position that if snow and ice were to fall it
would land on or near the highway or sidewalk, such removal to be
effected within 24 hours of the accumulation thereof.
The obligations under the previous two paragraphs are joint and severable
obligations of all owners and occupants.
Where snow and ice are not cleared away from the roofs of unoccupied
buildings as required, or where snow and ice are not cleared away from the
sidewalks in front of or alongside, at the rear of any buildings or vacant
lands, the Corporation of the Town of Deseronto may do so and may collect

TOWN OF DESERONTO WINTER PARKING
RESTRICTIONS
Winter parking is becoming an ever
growing concern; many incidents of
vehicles parked on town streets during
prohibited hours are being reported to
the Town. The Town’s By-Law and other
relevant departments will be actively
addressing this issue over the coming
weeks which may result in the issuing of
fines and/or towing of vehicles.
Please be advised that under By-Law 6-97
winter parking restrictions are in effect as
follows:
Section 25(5): No person, shall on any
highway, park any vehicle; between the
hours of 12:00 midnight and 8:00 a.m. from December 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015.
Section 40: No person shall park a vehicle in such a manner as to interfere with necessary civic services such as road
repairing, snow ploughing or snow removal that already is in progress, nor park a vehicle at any place where

Turn off all lights, except one inside and one outside, so
that both you and hydro crews outside know that power
has been restored.
Don't open your freezer or fridge unless it is absolutely
necessary. A full freezer will keep food frozen for 24 to 36
hours if the door remains closed.
Never use charcoal or gas barbecues, camping heating
equipment, or home generators indoors. They give off
carbon monoxide. Because you can't smell or see it, carbon monoxide can cause health problems and is life
threatening.
Use proper candle holders. Never leave lit candles unattended and keep out of reach of children. Always
extinguish candles before going to bed.
Listen to your battery-powered or crank radio for information on the outage and advice from authorities.
Make sure your home has a working carbon monoxide detector. If it is hard-wired to the house's electrical
supply, ensure it has a battery-powered back-up.
Protect sensitive electrical appliances such as TVs, computer, and DVD players with a surge-protecting power
bar.
2015 Dog Licences
2015 dog tags are now available All dog owners are required to purchase an annual licence/tag for their dog(s). The
fee for a dog licence is $15.00/dog until March 31st 2015. As of March 31st 2015, the fee for dog licences increases
to $20.00/dog. Dog licences can be purchased from the Town Hall located at 331 Main St.
Stoop & Scoop By-Law
With spring on the horizon, the Town would like to remind residents of Deseronto’s Dog Control By-law #14-03: No
owner shall allow his dog to defecate on any property, including a public park, other than the property of its owner
or other private property by permission, UNLESS the droppings are cleaned up.

2015 Property Tax Billing & Installment Notice
The 2015 interim tax bills was issued to all property owners in February 2015.
The first installment was due on February 27th, 2015.
The second installment is due April 30th, 2015.
If you do not receive a copy of your 2015 interim bill, please contact Town Hall. Failure to receive your tax notice
does not prevent you from incurring penalty charges for late payment.
Preauthorized Payment Plans provide you the option to pay your property taxes in 12 monthly installments
automatically withdrawn from your bank account on the 30th of each month. An alternative plan allows for the four
regular installments to be automatically withdrawn on the noted due dates. Please contact Town Hall should you
wish to enroll in one of our Preauthorized Payment Plans.

Notice to all residents. The Town Hall has an afterhours
mail slot located to the right of the front door for
residents who cannot make it in during regular office
hours (please do not leave cash when leaving payments
– cheque, or money order only please). The Deseronto
Town Hall is located at 331 Main St. Hours of Operation:
Mon-Fri 8:30am – 4:30pm
Not Receiving the Newsletter in your Post Office Box?
If you aren’t receiving the Deseronto Newsletter in your
P.O. Box, check with the Post Office to make sure you
don’t have the “No Flyer Option” selected. If you have
selected the “No Flyer Option” at the Post Office you
won’t receive the Newsletter.

DESERONTO ARCHIVES - Made in Deseronto
The Archives has recently been in contact with Silvy Embury of Lethbridge,
who sent us some photographs of an iron which belonged to her
grandmother, Helen Boyle.
On the back of the iron is an information panel which records details of the
iron’s manufacture, including the fact that it was made in Deseronto by the
Redi-Heat Electric Company Ltd.
There is not a lot of information in the Archives about Redi-Heat, but there
is an advertisement for the company in the May 28th, 1948 issue of
the Deseronto Post newspaper:
The February 4th, 1948 edition of the Post (held in the Archives on
microfilm) notes that the company was originally based in Belleville, from
1921, and had been in Deseronto since 1932. The firm was based in the
building which originally housed the head office of the Rathbun Company,
on the east side of Mill Street, south of Water Street. In the Rathbun era,
the building looked like this:

COMMUNITY CARE FOR
SOUTH HASTINGS (CCSH)
Happy (almost) Spring!
2014 was a busy year for us at CCSH
– we moved – twice! First we moved
our Thrift Store one door over (now
at 297 Main St) and then after a lot of hard work and
some very beautiful renovations, we moved our office into
the old thrift store location at 293 Main St. We are still in
the process of unpacking, but we couldn’t be happier!
These moves were made possible by a long list of staff,
contractors, helpers and volunteers. Thank you all!!!
CCSH is a Not for Profit Agency that provides vital services
to seniors and to adults with physical disabilities allowing
them to remain in their homes with dignity and respect in Deseronto and Tyendinaga Township. All of the programs

and services we offer could not run without the
dedication of all our hard working volunteers. One of
our fundraising programs, the Thrift Store, always
needs help to sort the amazing donations we receive
and to keep our shop running smoothly. The Thrift
Store is open Tues.-Sat. We have two working shifts
each day 10:00am – 1:00pm and 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Do
you have a donation for us? Please drop off all
donations to the new Thrift Store location at 297 Main
St. We have received a lot of amazing items that have
gone to benefit the community through our little store.
Clothing of all seasons and sizes, books large and small,
knickknacks, puzzles, sheets and blankets always can
always be sold very easily. Please do not drop off large
items like couches, chairs, child safety items, any electronics, computer parts or monitors, TV’s, old luggage pieces,
broken electronics or yard sale items. Please also keep in mind that torn, ripped and stained clothing, broken or
cracked items will just end up in the landfill, but at our cost. To help us cover the cost of disposal fees we would
gladly accept donations of garbage bag tags, or the money to help purchase them. Thank you, as always, to our hard
working volunteers for their dedication and for the continued generosity of our donators without which our store
would not operate! Please stop by the new store to check out our amazing Fall and Winter clothing! We are
refreshing the store almost daily to bring you a better selection. Our changeover to our spring and summer clothing
will be happening soon! Stop by the store to see what our hard working volunteers have ready to sell today.
