For Immediate Release ABNS & ABSNC 330.995.9172 [email protected] ABNS President Maria Shirey Honored for Contributions to Specialty Nurse Certification AURORA, Ohio, (March 25, 2015)—The American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) honored Maria Shirey, PhD, MBA, RN, NEA‐BC, ANEF, FACHE, FAAN, the organization’s current President, as part of its Legacy Leader recognition program. The American Association of Critical‐Care Nurses Certification Corp. (AACN) nominated Shirey for her significant contributions to the specialty nurse certification industry. In the nomination form, AACN noted the many roles she has served in during the course of her distinguished career including a nursing expert, leader, educator, researcher, executive, speaker and author. Throughout her career, Dr. Shirey has been a champion for healthy and safe work environments that enhance the ability of healthcare professionals to provide safe and quality patient care. “It has been my honor to support and advocate for the important mission and goals of our industry,” Shirey said. “I have had the pleasure of working with dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers who share my passion for the community.” She was one of the earliest earners of the CCRN credential in the United States and also became certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in advanced nursing executive practice. Dr. Shirey’s volunteer service within the industry is well documented. She served two consecutive terms as Chair of the AACN Certification Corporation Board of Directors. She has also served on the ABNS Board of Directors in the roles of President‐Elect and currently as President.
