INDEPENDENT MUSIC NETWORK NEWS LATE MARCH 2015 Hi Everyone I’m sending out an IMNN now because I’ll be away for the holidays and there are quite a few notices. There are a couple of PD & Conference notices right at the end because they caused problems with the formatting, so please make sure you scroll to the end, just to check. In the last email, I started a conversation about primary school rock bands and there has been a considerable amount of interest. I’ll put my findings in the Network Meetings section, as I hope this will become a network. I hope you’ve had a great term so far. Best wishes Anne Trigg Music Specialist, Takari Primary School ===================================== CONTENTS ===================================== Network Meetings Professional Learning Conferences News In the Classroom Awards/Grants/Opportunities Resources and Teaching Gig Guide About the IMNN (for those wishing to have notices included, etc.) Extra bit at the end (more PDs & conferences.) ===================================== NETWORK MEETINGS ===================================== PRIMARY SCHOOL ROCK BANDS I’ve had nearly a dozen responses regarding primary school rock bands, four of which are from the country. If you have a primary school rock band or are interested in starting one, please let me know and I’ll add you to the conversation. It would be also good to start an online chat page, so if you’re good at setting up something like this, we’d love it if you could offer your services – thanks. I went last time and it was fabulous. 4 full on days of PD with more than 500 music educators. They have international speakers as well as leaders from Australia. You could extend your stay there to have a little holiday and claim it back on tax (the work part anyway.) This is the website. https://mmc.eq.edu.au/Aboutus/Pages/Aboutus.aspx I wrote to them asking if there might be a discount for peeps coming from WA. They wrote back saying $500+GST. However, this discount will only be available to registrations of 4 or more from WA so I suggest if there are separate delegates from different schools that they organise to choose one school to register from. I'm going! Covering 16 diverse categories, the winning songs reflect the extraordinary depth and breadth of WA songwriting talent, featuring a mix of established leaders in their respective genres plus revealing exciting discoveries and hot tips for artists with big futures. Collectively, the category winners have already achieved the following: winning numerous WA Music Awards and previous Song Of The Year category awards; topping iTunes charts; being finalists in the International Songwriting Competition; being nominated for a Deadly award; and dominating triple j and Unearthed airwaves (including Unearthed’s 2014 #1 Most Played track in Australia); plus many have fresh releases or new ones dropping very shortly. Yet for many category winners, their Song Of The Year win is no doubt the first of many accolades to come. As the 2014 Grand Prize Winner, KUČKA walks away with $3,000 cash, recording time at the hit-making Albert Studios in Sydney, the opportunity for a publishing deal with Perfect Pitch Publishing, two days recording at Sonic Lolly, mastering provided by William Bowden of King Willy Sound (Grammy award recipient for mastering Goyte’s Somebody That I Used to Know), a BerkleeOnline music course, 500 CDs pressed by DiskBank, a RØDE Microphones package, plus more. The song is repeated 4 times, each time getting a little softer. This is a great way to review dynamics. Review with your students: Music can be loud and soft. When you sing “John Jacob Jingleheimer” always sing the tra-la-lala-la-la-la forte which means loud. Sing “John Jacob Jingleheimer” softer each time you sing it. On the board write: pp pianissimo very soft p piano soft mp mezzo piano medium soft mf mezzo forte medium loud f forte loud ff fortissimo very loud Explain that these words tell about dynamics, or how loud or soft the music is. Explain that when you sing “John Jacob Jingleheimer” sometimes you will be singing forte and sometimes piano. Teach the song by rote. Have 5 students come to the front of the room. Give the first student the f, the second the mf, the third the mf, the fourth the mp, the fifth the p, and the last one an f. The last f (or ff) is for the “la la la la” in the song. The student with the f (or ff) is to hold up his card each time the class sings the “la la la la” part. The first time you sing the song, the student with the f will hold up his card, and the class sings the song “forte”. When you get to the “la la la la” part, the child with the f (or ff) holds up his card and you sing forte. Each time you repeat the song, you sing it a little softer and the child holding the dynamic symbol holds it up. Fun and a great way to review and reinforce teaching of dynamic terms and symbols. The dynamic symbols are included for you to copy in the Musicplay 2 teacher's guide. If you have the Musicplay 2 Digital Resources, there is an assessment slide given at the end of the PPT. For information on the Digital Resources visit www.musicplay.ca [email protected] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE QUEST 2015 WINNERS ANNOUNCEMENT Fairbridge Festival is delighted to announce the winners of The Quest 2015: 12-15 age category SHANNON WHITE - Song-writing for Castles Crumble (John Curtin College of the Arts) ELLA EDWARDS-SMITH - Performance for Coffee (St Mary's Anglican Girls School) TND - Encouragement Award for Hold on Tight (Tom Broadbent, Ned Broadbent, Darcy Steven from Cornerstone Christian College and St Stephen’s School ) 16-18 age category ISLA IMOGEN - Song-writing for Story of a Friend (Great Southern Grammar) CARLA GENEVE - Performance for The Last Tiger (Albany Senior High School) MITCHELL MARTIN - Encouragement Award for Don't You See (Bunbury Catholic College) Congratulations go to all the finalists for making the judges' job a very tough one indeed! In an Australian first, Travel Beyond Group has designed a dedicated travel portal available to members of AMIN’s associated state and territory bodies (WAM Members) which offers discounted Virgin Australia fares (domestically and internationally), heavily discounted accommodation rates and ground requirements. Highlights include: • Savings on all Virgin Australia fare classes between 7% - 20% • Discounted rates and reduced excess on Car Hire • Multiple drivers, flexible driver age below 25 (over the age of 21 and full licence required) • Online portal to book hotels and apartments at best rate including Quest, Mantra, Oaks, Accor, IHG, Starwood, Crown and other boutique properties both in Australia and internationally for groups under 10 • Discounted Virgin Australia Lounge memberships • Excess Baggage allowances continue with Virgin Australia and QANTAS • Free wi-fi and onsite parking at selected hotels and apartments. “Last year AMIN surveyed its members about what discounts and benefits they would like us to negotiate for them to complement the excess baggage deal we negotiated with Virgin Australia in 2011” said AMIN Chair Patrick Donovan. “Well you asked for it – you got it! After discussion with the key travel companies we are thrilled to partner with Travel Beyond Group as our preferred supplier to cut red tape and costs for touring bands. We are particularly thrilled with the 7% discount off the cheapest Virgin Australia flight prices, which will complement the excess baggage discounts and encourage Australian bands to tour more often.’’ “Travel Beyond Group are delighted to be selected as the preferred travel partner of AMIN,’’ said Wonitta Atkins, Business Solutions Manager for the Travel Beyond Group. “The portal is simple to use and offers a travel solution not seen previously in the music industry. We are really excited to be a part of this ‘game changer’ for the industry and look forward to continuing to support local music.’’ The first portal will be set up on the Music Victoria site by March 23 for its annual membership drive, with WAM's following soon afterwards. WAM Members will use their membership numbers to self- register on the portal where all available fares can be seen so the best available deals can be bought. Musicians can book their entire tour on the portal and will be provided with a detailed itinerary. You will need to be a member of WAM to access the deals. And don't forget the new great buy-now-pay-later option! YOUTHOPIA PROGRAM: Youth program director Liz Newell says: My chief responsibility is to provide engaging, thrilling opportunities for discovery. It’s safe to say the 2015 Fairbridge Festival Youth Program offers plenty of opportunities for discoveries of the excellent kind. The catch is, I can’t tell you what they are, because then they wouldn’t really be your discoveries - would they? These are names I’ve only discovered recently myself, and the thrill of having done so still hasn’t faded. Here's a few highlights: Oh Pep! is an utterly excellent pop-folk quartet who were named the 2014 Folk Alliance Australia Youth Performer of the Year. Joining us from Melbourne-via-Margaret River is Rowena Wise. Currently, she’s one gorgeous voice and super-sweet ukulele skills, and she’s also just 20 years old. Fairbridge is your chance to say you “saw her when...”. For something completely – and I mean completely – different, we have Melbourne trio Kallidad. They describe themselves better than I ever could: “metal mariachi madness”. They wear skeleton face paint and play like every day is Dia de los Muertos. Nobody with a pulse should miss out. But this is a local festival first and foremost, and we happily embrace local talent – as everyone here already knows, there’s a lot of it. We have Koi Child, who are the recent amalgamation of two Fremantle bands, Kashikoi and Child’s Play, to deliver a funky jazz sound. The Katie J White Band join us from the Deep South – that’s Denmark – led by the stunning vocals of Katie herself. There’s also Raksha, who since winning Fairbridge’s own The Quest songwriting competition last year have been tightening their harmonies and tidying their tunes, not to mention we’ll be giving the winners of this year’s competition a shot onstage for the first time. I could go on, but as promised, I’m leaving the rest for you to discover. CHILDREN'S PROGRAM: Children's program director Milu Green says: Fairbridge Festival brings people together on common ground, with one goal…to escape the real world for just a weekend. A core component of our ongoing success is our Children's festival. It is recognised as one of Australia’s leading festivals within a festival, programmed specifically for our youngest audience. Kids encompass the excitement, curiosity and wonder that IS Fairbridge Festival. Here are my personal picks for this year’s program: Among living statues, puppet gnomes, hoola-hooping and a kooky jester, audiences will love Flying Heart Productions’ show, LOVE CASE SUIT NUT…the name says it all. Kids can get hands-on with Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, Camera Story Photography Workshops and of course the everengaging Paper Scissors Rock, the festival’s very own art space for children of all ages. The Woodshed is just like Grandpa’s workshop…nails, hammers and drills… any budding carpenter will feel at home here! Mic Conway’s National Junk Band will be bringing with them an abundance of musical junk instruments as well as their kids show, RUBBISH!, a highly original performance that promises to be gob-smackingly entertaining about “The Three Rs” : Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Kids in the Kitchen Cooking Classes are sure to fill those empty tummies and send children home with the skills to HOPEFULLY cook you breakfast in bed! I can guarantee this year’s children’s program will have kids bursting to tell classmates about THEIR Fairbridge Festival experience on that first day back at school. Big kids are welcome too, so please feel free to come and join the fun! ============================================================== INDEPENDENT MUSIC NETWORK NEWS If you have information you want published in the IMNN, you’ll need to send it to me in simple text as I do not include PDF’s – I need to be able to edit notices to fit – and I rarely include attachments. I am finding that even Word notices that are done in table form are messing things up. I will still be doing the IMNN in my spare time, so please understand that your notices may not get ‘out there’ before your event. It’s therefore a good idea to send me your info as soon as you have it. I don’t keep notices to re-use. If you want a notice repeated next time, try sending it to me in different words to keep people’s interest. My editorial policy is basically that if I think a notice will be of interest to readers, I’ll include it. Of course, not everything suits everyone, but you can always press delete or just email to ask me to unsubscribe you. The IMNN is sent out in good faith and I take no responsibility for the content. If the colours offend you – sorry. I use them so I can find my way around while I’m compiling the news and to stop myself getting bored with black & white. If you have changed your school details, please let me know, as it is handy to know which schools are receiving this. Also, if you find that you haven’t received the MNN for a few months, you’ve probably forgotten to send me a change of email address. Please feel free to forward this to colleagues who may not be on the mailing list, or better still, ask them to send me their email address. If you missed an IMNN or you want to find articles from previous newsletters, you can email me for a copy or go to the ASME WA website, www.asmewa.com.au, where the webmasters are kindly posting copies for your information. ===================================== And that’s ALMOST it for this time – I’ve put a couple of notices at the end because for some reason they mess up the formatting – so read on!
