About the Workshop

Sunday 5-7PM our first meeting at the studio (at that time Albert will give
out important information on en plein air painting, portability for both:
pastels and oils, an explanation of sunny and grey day lighting conditions
and an overall view of the week’s schedule, including maps to various
painting locations) followed by our first workshop dinner-individual checks
please.

Our daily schedule for Monday through Friday
Morning 9AM till noon Paint Along or demonstration by Albert
Afternoon 2-5PM paint on location with help at the easel.
Evening 7-9PM daily studio critique plus career building

Saturday 9AM-12PM an in-depth personal farewell critique for each
individual artist. The object being you can work better after the week is
ended.

How is this Mentoring Program different from Albert’s
typical 5-day painting workshop program?
This 6-day program starts with our first half-day meeting on SUNDAY 5:007:00PM at the Gandolfo Studio, followed by our first dinner at REDS Restaurant
and ends with an individual in-depth farewell critique on SATURDAY at noon.
Each day participants will paint together at designated locations that Mr. Handell
knows intimately. As you paint alongside Mr. Handell, he will show you stepby-step how he starts and works through a painting till finish. You will see for
yourself what and how he emphasizes what is important, what “un-essentials” he
leaves out (which is also very important) and how he keeps to the theme of the
painting till finished. If you wish, you will be able to paint the same subjects he
does, which gives you a realization of painting that is unique.
In the afternoon he will give help at each artist’s easel.
Each evening participants will meet to review the day’s painting, have nightly
critiques, and receive suggestions for the next day’s painting, and all careerbuilding information will be kept to the evenings.
Career Building – Discussed and Explained in Detail in the evening sessions:
Mr. Handell will first explain how he has built his own career and give you
important insights and information on how to build yours. He will then answer all
individual questions and give you insights from his extensive experience as an
artist, judge and juror of many national exhibitions, which will give you an idea
and help as to where you should exhibit. You might be surprised by the insights
revealed.

Who is this workshop for?
The mentoring program is designed for those who want an “after workshop” experience;
it is open to anyone who has either taken a workshop with Mr. Handell, or has taken at
least one workshop with an artist who gives painting workshops in pastels or oils.
How to Sign Up
Enrollment is strictly limited and spaces for the program will fill up quickly, so
don’t hesitate to reserve your space at this time. This program will be closed after
the 14th artist signs up, and a waiting list will be started.
To sign up, a non-refundable deposit of $175 is required to register.

A receipt will be sent to you for your tuition deposit. We will appreciate receiving
the $800.00 balance on your tuition two months before the first day of
the program, February 10, 2016. Receiving the full tuition two months prior to the
program will help us from overbooking.

Goodrow Lane is the road on the north side of West Route 89A between
Rodeo Drive and Coffee Pot Drive. It doesn't look like much of a road but it
has a street sign, so look for it. Veer left where it says "No Outlet." Look
for number 220 on the right, just past Schimberg Lane (on your right also.)
There are two little driveways, either of which you may use. Extra parking
is along Schimberg Lane.

Coming from the north, and immediately before Rodeo Drive, turn right
into the REDS parking lot. If you miss the turn, turn right on Rodeo.
Immediately after this turn, REDS is on your right.
**Both studio and restaurant are located within a short distance of each

Albert will demonstrate oils during the week
The Week

Each morning we will all meet on location or at the studio at 9AM, and
paint until noon. Every morning, Albert will paint along with you.

From noon to 2:00PM: Lunch and travel to and set-up for the afternoon
painting session.

From 2PM to 5:00 PM, we will paint on location. In the afternoons, Mr.
Handell will paint along with you for the first hour or so and then will give
individual help at the easel (optional). Our painting subject matter will vary
from Sedona’s beautiful red rock mesas and buttes, the quiet slickrock
banks of Oak Creek, the area’s graceful sycamore and cottonwood trees,
to wide-open breathtaking vistas and skies.

5-7PM Supper

In the evenings from 7:00 until 9:00 PM, we will meet at the studio for
our daily critique and suggestions for the next day’s painting. Mr. Handell
will also present eye-opening career building information at that
time. Our daily schedule can vary slightly from day-to-day.

Friday evening, we will meet at a local restaurant for our final farewell
dinner (individual checks)

Saturday morning from 9AM till noon, we have a final in depth, very
informative critique which will help you with your painting after the week
ends. If you can, please bring 6 or 8 images; either prints or computer
images (or originals) of works done before the workshop and everything
painted during the week.

How to Get to Sedona, Arizona
Sedona is 2 hours (121 miles) by car from the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport (PHX).
It’s an easy drive, mostly in Interstate 17.
By the way, if you are renting a car, know that it is expensive to rent a car at the
Phoenix airport. It is much cheaper to rent one in Sedona or Cottonwood. You
can take a shuttle from Phoenix to Sedona or Cottonwood to pick up a car.

What Art Supplies Should The Pastel Artist Bring?
If you are painting in pastel, bring all the pastels that you have and the pastel
papers that you like to paint on – plus a few lightweight drawing boards i.e.,
made of foam core or gator board or any lightweight material. Albert likes to use
The Kitty Wallis Sanded Paper in both white and their Belgium Mist grey tone,
they both come in, and he prefers the 12×18” pad of eight sheets, but if you wish
to work on a smaller size, these pads are also available in 9×12” sheets. These
are very handy pads for pasteling on location, and can be purchased from
Dakota Art Supplies (they only sell pastel supplies) at 888.345.0067. Albert also
paints with pastel on U-Art sanded papers 500-p and 600-p, grits.
If you are an experienced pastelist, bring the pastels you already have.
In addition to Unison pastels, Mr. Handell uses a combination of pastels by
Schmincke, Rembrandt, Sennelier and Nu-Pastel.
Suggested Pastel Sanded Paper
Kitty Wallis sanded pastel papers come in 12 x 18” pads with 8 individual sheets
per pad. These papers are available in both Belgian Mist grey and white. These
are very handy pads for pasteling on location, and can be purchased from
Dakota Art Supplies (they only sell pastel supplies) at 888.345.0067. Mr. Handell
has painted many landscapes on the12 x 18” format and he thinks it’s an ideal
size for landscapes. If for some reason you wish to pastel on these papers but on
a smaller size they also have pads that are 9 x12”.
If you wish to work on other pastel papers, be sure to bring them to the
workshop.

What Art Supplies Should The Oil Painter Bring?
If you are painting in oils, bring the colors that you are accustomed to painting
with, plus at least 12 or more canvas or canvas panels to paint on. Albert likes to
paint on the Source Tek Panels, telephone them at 800.587.5462 or visit their
website: www.canvaspanels.com. They have Claussen Linen glued to light
weight Birch plywood – in different sizes. They are strong and lightweight. The
recommended sizes are 9×12”,11×14”, 12×16”, or 14×18”. Or 16×20” Choose
the sizes that you are most comfortable painting on.
Can I Ship My Art Supplies To The Workshop?
Yes, you can ship your art supplies to Sky Ranch Lodge. For this you will need to
contact the office at the Conference Center, or if you are staying at a different
location, please contact them directly for this need.
Albert Handell’s Pallet Of Oil Colors
Mr. Handell paints in oil during the winter months in the studio. He uses
Turpenoid as his paint medium, especially at the beginning, since these works
are larger and call for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th painting sessions. He will then use
Winsor Newton Liquin, very sparingly as his paint medium. He applies paint
combing both brush and knife applications of color. His Oil Palette is listed below:













If you are an experienced oil painter, bring any materials with which you would
normally paint.
Brushes
A large assortment of brushes is recommended. Two or three of each size:
numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. Your choice of brights*, flats (sable), rounds, or filberts
(bristle)*.
Mr. Handell also uses:

Richeson # 9629 signature #’s 10 & 12,
Langnickel Royal Sable # 5590 #’s 8, 10 & 12,
DaVinci Maestro series 7000 # 10, 12,14 (white bristle filbert)
Mediums



No medium; use odorless turpentine (Turpenoid) used by Mr. Handell for
his alla prima painting (one session paintings).
Liquin by Windsor Newton -Mr. Handell uses for glazing purposes and for
paintings that take multiple sessions to complete.
A general all around paint medium, which many artists use, is a mixture of
1/3 Damar varnish, 1/3 linseed oil, 1/3 turpentine or turpentine substitute.
