Page Two March 29, 2015 AWordfromthePastor… Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Today Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, which begins with the commemoration of Christ’s triumphal entrance into Jerusalem - the city that he loved - in order to accomplish his Paschal Mystery – the passage from death to life. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis encouraged us, in his very irst homily (two years ago this week), “to walk in thepresenceoftheLord, withtheLord’sCross;tobuildtheChurchontheLord’sbloodwhichwaspouredouton the Cross; and to profess the one glory: Christ cruci ied.” On this Palm (Passion) Sunday, we will begin each Mass with a solemn entrance into the Church. Allow me say a word about the different days and liturgies of Holy Week: Monday of Holy Week – Those who can are encouraged to attend the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, celebrated by Archbishop John J. Myers at 8PM. During this elaborate Liturgy, the Holy Oils (Oil of Catechumens and Oil of the Sick) that will be used in the parishes of the Archdiocese for the coming year will be blessed, while the Oil of Chrism (used at baptisms, confirmations and ordinations) will be consecrated. As a sign of communion and filial obedience, all the priests present will renew their promise of obedience to their bishop. It is one of the most beautiful liturgies held at the Cathedral, and I would certainly especially commend those who have never visited our Cathedral-Basilica to participate. If you wish to attend but need a ride to the Cathedral, please call the rectory as soon as possible and we will try to accommodate your need. Holy Thursday – The Mass of the Lord’s Supper, commemorating the institution of the sacred priesthood and Christ’s example of humble service (washing of the feet) will be celebrated at 7:30PM. This Mass marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum, which the Church considers as one long liturgy, ending with the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night (it is for this reason that there is no final blessing neither at this Mass, nor on Good Friday’s liturgies). At the end of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Blessed Sacrament will be carried processionally to the Convent Chapel. The Chapel will remain open for private adoration and prayer throughout the evening and night, until Morning Prayer which will be prayed together in the Main Church at 8AM on Good Friday (in lieu of the morning Masses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, we will pray Morning Prayer – from the Church’s Liturgy of the Hours – daily at 8AM). Good Friday – This will be a day of silence, penance and reflection. I would therefore greatly encourage us all to take a day-off from work in order to be better able to participate in the Church’s liturgies. A reminder that Good Friday is a day of Fasting and Abstinence. Those who are in good health are also encouraged to observe the “Paschal Fast” which ends with the celebration of the Easter Vigil (it is a good way to prepare ourselves to share more deeply in the Lord’s resurrection). Permits have graciously been granted by the Township of Belleville for a Living Station of the Cross that will be held in English and Spanish beginning at 10AM on the Parish grounds, continuing on the streets in the vicinity, and ending on the side of the rectory around 12 Noon. The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion will be held at 3PM in English and at 7:30PM in Spanish. Please plan on attending one of these two liturgies, in which we will have the opportunity to reflect on our own cross in our life and ask the Lord to help us carry it. We will also be encouraged to participate in the annual Good Friday Collection for the Church in the Holy Land (see Page Six of this bulletin). This year, more than ever before, we need to show our solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters who continue to witness to their Faith in spite of the cost. Holy Saturday – The Holy Easter Vigil begins at 8PM. I heartily invite all our parishioners to attend this liturgy, during which a large number of catechumens and children will be baptized. Come prepared for a powerful and longer liturgy, which is also called, “the Mother of all Vigils.” It would be the most fitting way to welcome our brothers and sisters who will become fully-fledged members of our parish during this most holy night, when Christ destroyed death forever. And of course, make sure to invite all your family and friends who have become distant from the Church to join us for the Easter Sunday Masses. The Lord has died for them too, but of what use is Christ’s victory over death for them, if this news still hasn’t reached them? Easter Sunday – We will have a full schedule of Masses, and we surely hope to see you, as we exchange the annual Easter Greeting, “He is Risen … He is Truly Risen.” Make sure to teach the children on the greatness of this glorious day, coming to Mass nicely dressed, on time, and with a desire to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection. A blessed Holy Week to all, Fr. Ivan Sciberras [email protected] Page Three FINANCE Due to early transmittal of today’s bulletin the collection amount for March 22nd will be announced in the April 5th bulletin. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK. . . Our students participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon. More than one thousand dollars was raised to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Thank you to all the families who participated and thank you to Mrs. Reese who coordinated the Math-A-Thon. During this season of Lent , our students are learning that acts of giving and helping others are so very important. Jesus, The Master Teacher, throughout His life exemplified this. An activity such as the Math-A-Thon is one way our students put the teachings of Jesus into practice. This weekend the church celebrates Palm Sunday and Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. He is greeted by crowds waving palm branches as they recognize the significance of His ministry. At St. Peter’s, as part of a Catholic School community, our students are privileged to study and reflect on the words and deeds of Jesus every day. We wish you a Blessed Palm Sunday. “Hosanna to the son of David. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest heaven”. Our hearts, minds and prayers are also e specially aware of the Holy Land. Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Christians in the Holy Land. Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives. As a pontifical collection requested by Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on Good Friday, you are supporting Christians in the Holy Land. Franciscans and others in the Holy Land are housing and feeding the poor, providing religious formation and education, maintaining shrines and parishes, and conducting pastoral ministry. For more information, visit MyFranciscan.org/good-Friday. The Good Friday Collection is requested by the Holy Father. Please be as generous as your abundance allows.
