400 people gathered at CSI St. Luke’s Church, Mandaveli to celebrate Palm Sunday on
March 29. It is believed that on this day, Jesus rode a donkey into Jerusalem and the
people sang songs and waved small branches to welcome him. Thereafter, events led to
his condemnation and death on a cross. A procession was held from Mandaveli market to
the church with people dressed in colourful costumes and the entire scene was re-enacted.
Holy Week services continued through this week at all local churches and will end with
Easter Sunday.

Every family who lives in the temple zone wants to
feed the multitude. In the name of the lord. If they can’t
feed in iblical numbers then they certainly turn out tiffinlunch-tiffin for to relatives who are here for the fest.

It was too early for such a big spread so we chose
paneer soda, paid for at Kalathis. Outside this iconic shop,
a stall for traditional cool drinks had been set up.
Walking down Mandaveli, we spotted families standing at the gates of apartments, offering buttermilk and
lemon juice.
Food also makes a festival. You don’t have to feel
awkward in reaching for a paper plate and standing in
the queue.
But there is the yuck side to all this.
There are people who gorge on sambhar sadham, down
some buttermilk, grab biscuits and the ladoos too. Real
big stomachs these.
And there are people who dump food waste and plates
all over. Padmini Rajagopal says there is way too much
food and water handed out. Govind Balasubramaniam

This is an idea that has
been introduced by ‘relish
nutrition’. Relish produces
milkshakes, juices and nut
milks in their production
facility at Alwarpet. The
founders are Ganesh and
Sowmya and their partner

in banking. But he has always
had a passion for food and his
dream was to open a health
food business.
Sowmya and Ganesh got
hooked onto milkshakes during
their life abroad. When they
sampled the shakes available
here in India, they were sorely
disappointed. ‘We felt that the
milkshakes here were very
low on nutritional value, high
on junk. So we decided to take
this up as our project’. And
thus relish nutrition was born.
Most of the milkshakes are made of seasonal fruit, a binder
(banana), nuts, seeds and milk. The products are organic and
are made fresh based on demand. In addition to this, relish
also offers cold-pressed fruit juices and nut milks. Cold pressing of the juices extracts the juice from the fruits without heating them and hence preserves the nutritional value of the fruits.
Relish initially supplied the
milkshakes to gyms as an ‘after
workout’ product. But since
the shelf life of the shakes was
very low, if the patrons of the
gyms didn’t show up for their
workout, the products would
go waste. This made them look
into alternate ways of selling
their product.
So they adopted idea of subscription to sell their shakes
- the lowest offered is 12
products, to be delivered daily
or weekly. There is a lot of flexibility about ordering – all they
need is 30 minutes notice and
you can have your milkshake
delivered to you.
Says Sowmya ‘the milkshakes are very filling. And
they have enough nutrition
and calories to replace a meal.
Also, we start our daily
deliveries as early as 6.30
a.m. So, our milkshakes
have become the breakfast
of choice for a lot of our
customers. Mothers also
use the milkshakes as
an after school snack for
their children or the nut
milk to add to their cereal
for breakfast. It is a tasty
healthy food delivered at
your door step.’
Moreover, the regular
milk in the shakes can
be replaced by their nut
milks, thereby making
it suitable for vegans or
people who are lactoseintolerant too ! Slurp away

n It is hard to digest this shocking news. How can we forget
our beloved AG Miss.
Right from the early 1970s from the time she was staying at
Balaji Nagar, Royapettah till recently at Sriram Nagar….she was
an allrounder in Vidya Mandir.
Conducting the morning prayers, taking classes - not just
maths but science too.
It was way back in1972-’73 that she was our 3rd std. science
miss, beautifully describing the life cycle of a housefly, butterfly
and frog not only with wonderful chalk sketches but with “abhinayam” too. Probably the Nrithyodaya genes ran in her blood
(she is the niece of the legendary film maker doyen of South
Indian cinema K. Subrahmanyam).
Again, teaching us the probability theory (with wonderful examples of marbles/tops….goli and bambaram…) and set theory
(Union and Intersections) with examples from Hindu mythology….something different and innovative…..
The Friday morning prayer with a Sanskrit sloka specially
composed for Vidya Mandir in higher and lower octaves…sung in
unison is worth mentioning. Quadratic equations and Integration,
Indices and Matrices, Co-ordinate geometry, Differential equation
and derivatives, Pythagoras (‘Adhu Piththa Goraas illa…Pai tho
goras….darbaiyai pottu posikkinaalum……kku varaadhu Eppo
ungalukkellam ind aruma theriyaadhu, veli naadu pona appa
puriyum). .’
Her wonderful choreography for Inter House dramatics or
schoolday functions and the one-to-one talk during her leisure
hours inside the staff room…
I will not pray for her soul to rest in peace for she is immortal
and is always with us…..forever.

TANGEDCO office located near liquor shop,
drain; shift it please
The photo of our local TANGEDCO office shows that it is located near
Thirumylai station, opposite a drain and next to a TASMAC shop and bar.
It is also situated on the first floor - so elders have to climb the steep
steps which makes it difficult for them.
Such an important office is located at such an unclean and unapproachable place. How can TANGEDCO do this? They must shift it.

Biomethanation plant set up
in R. A. Puram

A bio-methanation plant
has been set up near the
Amma Canteen on Kamaraj
Road, R. A. Puram.
This plant takes as input
vegetable, fruit and other biodegradable waste and produces a mix of gases which
consist of about 65% methane
and 35% other gases.
Chennai Corporation
has set up the plant at this
canteen and it is all set to
go. The plant has a capacity
of 15 cubic meter and it can
produce up to 525 cubic feet
of gas daily.
This, say engineers,
should be enough to run the
adjoining Amma canteen. The
output from the plant can replace up to 2 cylinders of LPG
which is presently being used

in the canteen for cooking.
Though the initial cost of
setting up the plant is high,
a little over Rs.16 lakhs, the
maintenance is simple and
the maintenance costs are
also nominal.
The plant takes up to 750
kg of segregated bio-degradable waste daily. At present,
the plans are to obtain the
waste from the nearby fruit
and vegetable markets, the
canteen itself and nearby restaurants. Garbage which is
collected from the public can
also be used, but it needs to
be segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable
waste first, and only the
biodegradable portion can be
used.
As of now, the plan is to
segregate the waste at the
premises itself, which would

Chennai Corporation engineers want people to help
source waste. The waste segregation has be done at home
and the biodegradable waste can be collected daily from
houses. How best to do this?
There are multiple uses of
this bio methanation plant.
Not only does it help save tax
payer money by reducing the
cost of running the Amma
canteen, but it also helps to
dispose degradable waste in an
efficient manner while nurturing the parks in the city.
Active community groups
like RAPRA may want to take
the lead.
require time and manpower.
It will be interesting to
observe the functioning of the
process. Especially the cycle
of sourcing waste, mainly
from the neighborhood.
PARKS TOO
BENEFIT
The waste left over
in the plant after gas
generation is very rich
in nutrients – its NPK
(Nitrogen, Phosphorus,
Potassium) value is very
high and can be used as a
fertilizer for the Corporation parks. Which means,
linking up with staff at
the civic body;s parks in
R A Puram will complete
the circle.
