RARE KRITIS SUNG AT EVENT ORGANISED
BY SANSKRIT COLLEGE
SPORTS DAY AT CALIBRE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Calibre International School celebrated
its 9th annual sports meet on Feb 1 at CSI
School for the Deaf, San Thome. Students
from all classes enthusiastically participated in numerous track and field events. Dr.
R. N. Krishna, founder and correspondent
of Boston International School, Chennai,
Karthick Gopinathan, international fencing champion and S.S.Aakash, a promising
young swimmer were the special invitees.
The event commenced with the hoisting
of the school flag after which the meet was
declared open. Oath taking and lighting
of the torch followed after which students
participated in a march past and drill. The
highlight of the sports meet was the pyramid formation and display of yoga postures
by students of classes VI - X. Other events
included figure marching (students make
set patterns like geometric shapes and
concentric circles) and a zumba dance performed by the KG and primary students.
The overall championship was won by the
White House and the best athlete awards
were given to Ilyas Bhagat of class X and
Gayatryy Dhandapani of class VII.
ANNUAL DAY AT CHETTINAD VIDYALAYA
Kumara Rani’s Chettinad Vidyalaya
celebrated their 29th annual day on Jan
29 at the school auditorium. After the
welcome address by the correspondent
and secretary Dr. Meena Muthiah, the
event was inaugurated by the chief guest
Dr. V. R. Devika, managing trustee of The
Aseema Trust.
Children participated in several
unique programmes - ‘The Korean Fantasy’ number transported the audience
straight to Korea, the space jam dance
was a tribute to the Mars Orbiter Mission
(Mangalyan) and the Krishna Leela portrayed the naughty and playful Krishna
dancing with the gopikas. There were also
three interludes - one was about royal
philanthropists, the second was about the
accomplishments of great men and their
mothers and the third depicted the dream
of the national poet Bharathiyar. The
event ended with a dance by the
KG students on Goddess Lakshmi and
her manifestation.
A musical evening ‘Samskrita Sangeetha Sandhya’ organised by the students of The Sanskrit College, Mylapore
was held at the college premises on Jan 18. The chief
guest, Dr. N. V. Deviprasad talked about the contribution of
Sanskrit to music in his inaugural address. T. V. Ramanathan, president of the college trust, V. Srikanth, secretary
of the college trust, Dr. N. V. Devi Prasad, principal, B. S.
Srikanth, acharya/teacher of the courses, H. Subramanian,
manager of the college office and other staff members were
felicitated. Vidwan and alumni member Tanjore Srinivasan
and R. Natraj, retired IPS officer were special invitees.
A lecture demonstration of ‘Rare kritis of Muthuswami
Dikshitar’ by Dr. Uma Srinivasan followed the inaugural
address. The event ended with vocal concerts by V. Mohan,
disciple of guru Maharajapuram S. Ramachandran and V.
Navaneet Krishnan, disciple of Padma Narayanaswamy.
The audience were treated to some rare kritis in Sanskrit,
Tamil, Telugu and Manipravalam.
ENERGY CONSERVATION WEEK
OBSERVED
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)
celebrated ‘Oil and Energy Conservation Fortnight’ by
conducting competitions at Achariya Bala Siksha Mandir (nursery/primary School) at Eldams Road. Children
participated in drawing and colouring competitions, essay
writing and poster/slogan making competitions. Prizes
were then distributed to the winners.
WALKATHON TO RAISE CANCER
AWARENESS HELD
Care and Welfare Foundation, an NGO, organised an
early morning cancer awareness walkathon - ‘Walk Beyond Cancer’ at Marina Beach on Feb 1 to commemorate
World Cancer Day. More than 100 volunteers and students
from several city colleges walked from the Lighthouse to
the Labour statue. They were also joined by many people

D ’ S O U Z A
It is that time of the year when we at
KutcheriBuzz (www.kutcheribuzz.com) travel
south, to the temple town of Chidambaram.
Our assignment is to cover the dance festival where
artistes from across the country and outside
offer their anjali to Lord Nataraja on the occasion
of Sivaratri.
In recent times, our reportage has been close because
of the nature of this festival and the increasing interest
there is in it.
A major departure this year in Chidambaram is taking
place - the Dikshitars, the priest community had decided
to host the dances themselves and elbowed out a private
Trust which has organized the festival for over
three decades.
It began here as a simple affair - a few short recitals
on the occasion of Sivaratri in the inner prakaram of this
magnificent temple, an attempt to encourage artistes to
perform in temples.
Soon, the festival in Chidambaram, and then those
organized at Nagapattinam and Thanjavur went on to
create a Natyanjali circuit. A circuit that allowed
dancers to perform at multiple temple venues in one or
two evenings. It also helped local hosts to invite local as
well as touring dancers to feature in their events.
The Natyanjali then has got a life of its own.
They are far from simple festivals. Each host now attempts to present a grand spectacle, local area businesses
are roped in to bolster the funds and guests include politicians, community leaders and patrons of the arts.
While in some temples, the anjali is for a few hours
on Sivaratri, at others it is spread across five evenings.
Clearly, the Natyanjali has now got a life of
its own.
BIRTHDAY TITHIPUJA OF SRI RAMAKRISHNA
The 180th birthday Tithipuja of Sri Ramakrishna will be
celebrated with a special puja and homan from Feb 20 - 22.
Events on Feb 20 include a reading from ‘The Gospel of
Sri Ramakrishna’ in Tamil and English, 108 portrigal of
Sri Ramakrishna in Tamil, vishnu saharasranamam chanting
and a display of 180 sayings of Sri Ramakrishna by 180 young
devotees. On Feb 21, a book and DVD on Swami Vivekananda
Telemovie in Tamil will be released by Krishnaswamy
Associates Pvt. Ltd. On Feb 22, bhajans, special talks and a
concert by Mambalam Sisters have been organised.

For the nth time, the
civic body cleared up the
stalls of all the hawkers on
South Mada Street, Mylapore
this past week. The workers
brought lorries, crowbars and
spades to get the job done.
The hawkers though were
back in business that very
evening.
Similar drives have been
executed in the past but noth-
ing much has come of it.
Many Mylaporeans want
to live with these hawkers
since they offer all that families want for their kitchen.
Others say the stalls add to
the chaos on this street.
Long ago, the hawkers
alongside the temple tank
here were cleared and many
were given bunk shops along
the Chitrakulam - these
bunks got leased or were
bought by other small

of co-existence. It is a hassle to navigate ( this street) but
they ( vegetable hawkers) form the character of the street
now. One-way ( traffic system) should be the way to go.

Senior stage, film and TV actor
V. S. Raghavan who spent many years in
Mylapore passed
away recently.
Born in Vembakkam village,
near Kanchipuram on
Feb 18,1925, where he
spent the early part of
his childhood, he came
to live in Mylapore
when he was three
and studied at P. S. High School. Subsequently
he studied at St. Columbus Higher Secondary
School, Chengalpattu, followed by two years
in Madras Christian College, Chennai. Raghavan started his career as a stage actor
and went on to become a character actor in films,
starting with Vairamali (1954). He has acted in
over 1000 films.
He has also acted in numerous television
serials. Raghavan started working in 1942, as a
sub-editor for Malathi magazine run by humourist
Thumilan (N. Ramaswamy) and after its closure
joined Jupiter Press. At the press, a group of fellow employees used to do amateur stage plays,
which led him to act in some plays including
some Hindi plays. Earlier, he had acted in YMIA Fine Arts’
theatre group’s play Vairamalai, written by
Thottakara Viswanathan, staged at the YMCA,
and when the production adapted the stage play to
a film, he essayed the same role in it, thus making
his film debut in 1954. In the same year, he made his debut as a dramatist and started the Indian National Artists (INA)
with four other friends - Mali, Vadiraj, Nataraj
and K. Balachander, the well-known film maker
who passed away recently. The INA staged plays
at reputed sabhas in Chennai and across the state.
The silver jubilee function of INA theatres was
celebrated in the presence of the then chief minister, M. G. Ramachandran.
He was popular for his role in the TV serial
“Anni” made by K. Balachander. The notable films he starred in include Kadalikka
Neramillayi, Savale Samali, Karnan, Iru Kodugal,
Kalyana Raman and Hey Ram.
He was awarded with various titles by the
government of Tamilnadu and the Tamil film
Industry including the title of “Kalaimamani”. He also produced many TV serials.

He passed away on Jan 24 at the age of 90.
He is survived by his two sons
K. R. Sreenivasan and K. R. Krishna and their

Ganesan Shankar, aged 58 years and a senior
civil engineer and consultant passed away
on Jan 2, 2015.
He was a resident of
Mandaveli.
He studied in Delhi,
following in the steps
of his father, T. R.
Ganesan who was also
a senior civil engineer
and who had worked
on some big projects
like the Thungabadra river dam project in Karnataka and whose family also resides in Mandaveli.
Shankar specialised in the construction of
roads and bridges and worked for many years
in the Middle East. He had also worked for the
World Bank on its projects and in recent times,
was based in war-torn Afghanistan.
He headed the south India projects for Louis
Berger, a Delhi-based American company.
His family resides near the Mandaveli MTC

P. S. Muthuveeru, aged 62 and a resident of
Narasimhapuram, Mylapore passed away recently. He retired as Addl.
Commissioner of Commercial and Sales Tax,
Govt, of Tamil Nadu.
He joined the state as a
tax officer and went on
to become the No.2 officer in this department,
working in many places
in Tamil Nadu.
His family said he supported many social
welfare projects privately with the support of
well-wishers.

P. S. Ramachandran (72 years) passed away
on Dec 18, 2014. He retired as senior marketing

R. Gurusubramaniam, aged 91, passed away
on Jan 18 at his residence in Mylapore. He was a resident of
Mylapore since 1959. He was born in
Thirukkuvalai village in Nagai district
in 1924 to G. Radhakrishna Iyer and
Rajalakshmi. He joined
All India Radio, Trichy
in 1946 and retired as a
Programme Executive, All India Radio,
Chennai in 1982. His family said he was passionate about Carnatic music. He is survived by his son G. Baskaran
(Doordarshan, Chennai) and daughter Rajeswari

Lalitha Lakshminarayanan, wife of
K. G. Lakshminarayanan (better known as Artist
Ravi) passed away on
January 9. She was
94 years old and is survived by the families
of her two sons and six
daughters.
A longtime resident
of Pitchu Pillai Street
in Mylapore (from
1940 - 1980), she
continued to live for a few months every year in
Mylapore till 1996. Her family said she
regularly visited the temples in the area.

REMEMBERING S. KRISHNAMURTHY IYER
Dedicated patron of
Sri Sankara Gurukulam
The birth centenary celebrations of S. Krishnamurthy Iyer was held at Sankara
Gurukulam, Abhiramapuram
on Jan 26. Krishnamurthy, a
long time resident of C. P. Ramaswamy Street, is the first
son of Thethiyur Subramanya
Sastrigal - the founder of Sri
Sankara Gurukulam.
The gurukulam was
started by Krishnamurthy’s
father in 1947 to propagate
the teachings of Sri Adi
Shankara. After his father’s
demise, Krishnamurthy took
over and managed the affairs
of the gurukulam along with
his brother from 1954 - 2007. He was a Sri Vidya Upasaka and offered daily poojas
to Adi Shankara, Sri Chakra
and other deities for more
than 50 years. He served in
the postal department and refused the offer of a promotion
and transfer to Hyderabad
to take care of gurukulam as
S. Krishnamurthy Iyer
Thethiyur Subramanya Sastrigal
advised by the Mahaperiyava
of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. He had the opportunity to
host the gurus of both Sringeri Sharada Peetham and
Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam on
several occasions during their
visit to Chennai. He also
supervised the renovation of
the gurukulam in 1980.

in 1986 told the gathering of
devotees that Krishnamurthy
was a Karmayogi and lived
like a rishi with no attachments to worldly affairs. He
has inspired innumerable
spiritual aspirants across
generations, especially
youngsters, to follow the
teachings of Adi Shankara
and lead a dharmic life. The gurukulam is now
being run by Thethiyur Subramanya Sastrigal’s extended

PILGRIM’S IMPRESSION
A Hindu going on a
pilgrimage to the
Annai Velankanni
shrine in Nagapattinam may not be something new. But one
pilgrim from Mylapore
chose to put to use her
painting skill. Writer S Usha, (who writes under the
name - Vidya Subramaniam) took a close
look at the altar, got back home and did a
water colour work of art. She says she was
impressed with the visual and sat down
to do it. Entirely self taught, Usha, who
recently retired from the Tamil Nadu Govt.
Social Welfare Department, has more than
a hundred novels in Tamil to her credit and
writes a popular blog ‘Kathai In Kathai’.
One of her novels ‘Uppu Kanakku’ on the
Salt Satyagraha has been translated

The birth centenary of Prof. V. V. Sadagopan was celebrated by his family and rasikas
at Bhavans, Mylapore on Sunday last. Sadagopan was a multifaceted person Carnatic music composer and artiste, music researcher, teacher and film actor.
Though the Sunday meet had a small attendance, the anecdotal talks helped rasikas
get a better idea of Sadagopan. Speakers included vidwan T K Murthy,
Prof. Va. Ve. Su, Sujatha Vijayaraghavan, Vamanan and Dr. Venkatakrishnan.
