The Board of Trustees meets once a month
on the 2nd Wednesday. The odd numbered
months: 1-January, 3-March, 5-May, 7-July,
9-September, 11-November the meetings are 7 p.m.
in Lakeside Lodge. On the even numbered months:
2-February, 4-April, 6-June, 8-August, 10-October,
12-December, the meetings are held at 10 a.m. in
Lakeside Lodge. Workshops are held as needed, on
the last Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m. in the
Association office, all residents welcome.

President’s Corner
Welcome everyone, it is a busy
time in the Knoll as many of you
know we are under new management
and with that transition comes a rush
of activity. My fellow Trustees and I
have been working on many old issues
as well as some new projects. I will
provide an overview and leave the
details to our manager Russell.
• Most importantly we are
launching the Leisure Knoll
website shortly. This will be an
excellent tool for community
communication. Our
management team will have
email addressed so everyone
will be able to contact Russell
and receive a response within
24 hours.
• We are working on a ROBO
calling system that will enable
management to notify all
residents with just one phone
call in cases of emergencies or
important information that we
want to get out to everyone.
• The BOT is continuing to
review the new office project
and the options. FHW
Engineers and our accountant
will be attending our next
open meeting to discuss these
options and the projected final
costs. We were projecting a
spring start but that has been
delayed.
• The putting green project is
moving forward, Russell will
give you more information
during his management report.
• We had a town hall meeting
on February 10th, 12 to 15
residents talked to Vinny,
Lucille and Russell about
community concerns
including Gate security,
Emergency procedures and
night rover patrol. The BOT
and management are working
on several recommendation
from that meeting. We are
planning another Town hall
meeting.
• The BOT would like to
announce that we are
looking to form an insurance
committee, anyone interested
should contact Russell. We
have a wealth of knowledge in
this community and we should
tap into it for help where we
can.
In closing I think we as a board and
community are moving in a positive
direction and we should all be looking
forward to a great spring and summer
season.

Community Manager’s Report
The Board of trustees requested that as part of my
initial “projects” I find more ways to communicate with
homeowners. To that end we are creating a new Leisure
Knoll website! The Leisure Knoll website will be full of
information and will be an excellent way for management
and the Board of Trustees (BOT) to keep everyone updated.
This will be for important community news as well as to
inform everyone about activities throughout the community.
As we put the finishing touches on the initial launch of the
website, we will begin to “get the word out” about how
homeowners can login to it. Through this new site, we will
begin to explore its many features. You can begin to explore
the website at www.leisureknollatmanchester.com. (It will
be in a constant state of improvement/updating).
Management has also contracted with a phone service
provider to install an Alert phone calling system that will
allow management/BOT to send important messages to all
resident with just one call! These “alert calls” will be limited
to emergencies and important community information.
For either of these communication tools to be
effective, the management staff needs to have your contact
information. Current phone numbers and email addresses
are the key to the success of these programs. Most residents
have provided management with updated phone numbers
within the past several months, so we are confident we
will reach most with our “alert call” when it’s necessary.
You will have to provide your email address to be able to
login into the new website. Please be aware your contact
information is NOT shared with any outside third party
at any time.

interactive beginning!

POLICY RESOLUTION NO.
DEFINING “Curb Your Dog” POLICY
WHEREAS, the Governing Documents empower the
Board of Trustees (the “Board”) to manage the affairs and
business of Leisure Knoll at Manchester Association, Inc.
(the “Association”); and
WHEREAS, the Association’s Board of Trustees is
empowered “to make, and enforce compliance with, such
reasonable Rules and Regulations relative to the operation,
use and occupancy of the common areas and Association
facilities, and to amend the same from time to time, as when
approved by appropriate Board resolutions shall be binding
on the owners and occupants of units, their successors and
assigns”.
WHEREAS, has heretofore adopted a RULE that
“Pets must be curbed”; and
WHEREAS, the definition of the Rule has been
questioned as it related to dogs, so the Board has determined
it appropriate to clarify the policy which is the basis of the
Rule;
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED that the
RULE that “Pets must be curbed” as it relates to “curbing
your dog” shall more specifically mean and be construed
as follows:
“Keep your dog under control and out of trouble... i.e.;
keep your dog(s) leashed and/or confined to your property
and keep them from being a nuisance, or causing trouble
or causing damage to property of others or injury to others.
Under no circumstances, shall dogs be allowed to roam at
large. All dogs shall be walked on a fixed leash not to exceed
10 feet in length. All dogs shall be walked on sidewalks or
paved roads or driveways and/or parking areas. Dogs shall
not be left alone outside unattended, even if on the property
of the dog’s owner.
It also means to pick up your dog’s poo when they are
out on your property. The dog owner shall be responsible
for immediately cleaning up after the dog and repairing
any property damage of any kind that is caused by your
dog. When your dog defecates (aka “poops”) it should be
in the street off the grass, and not on your neighbor’s lawn
or grass on the curbside of the sidewalk, commonly known
as the “devils strip”.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Association
shall publish and give notice of the foregoing definition to
all homeowners; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that nothing in this
Resolution shall prevent the Board from exercising any
and all rights and remedies available to it by law, in equity
and/or pursuant to the governing documents, to enforce any
reasonable rule(s) relating to pet control or to impose fines
for violation of the Association’s rules.

I hereby certify that the foregoing was duly adopted
at a regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of Leisure
Knoll at Manchester Association, Inc. held on this 14th
day of July, 2009.

Art Appreciation Club
There are two dates to mark on your
calendar. One is May 5, when there will
be a membership meeting in the PAC at
1:30. The second date is June 2, when there
will be a trip to the Guggenheim Museum on Fifth Avenue
in New York City.
You will be able to sign up for this trip at our May 5
meeting. Cost and time of leaving will be in the May issue
of the Knoll News.
The Guggenheim Museum is internationally acclaimed.
It is a significant architectural icon of the Twentieth Century
as well as a cultural center, educational institution, and the
heart of an international network of museums. Visitors can
experience special exhibitions of modern and contemporary
art, lectures by artists and critics, performances and film
screenings, and daily tours of the galleries led by museum
educators.
You may be able to select one or more of these,
depending on scheduling and time allotted in the museum.
More information on specific exhibitions on display in
June will be in the May issue of the Knoll News.

Leisure Knoll Art Class invites all community residents
to, Artists in Action, a free art class hosted at the PAC from
9:00 am to 1:00 pm on April 13th. Complimentary coffee,
tea and light refreshments will be served, yet all attendees
should bring a lunch for the luncheon social during the class.
Residents who would like to have some fun with
paints, pencils, or any medium are encouraged to attend.
We ask that all attending artists bring their own supplies,
this includes materials and canvas; however, easels will
be provided. A reference painting will be on display, and
we hope to see every artist’s personal interpretation of the
work. We encourage anyone interested in art to attend; no
experience is necessary.

cartridges? The Computer Club has a receptacle in the mail
room in Timberland Hall. Please bring your used cartridges
down and place them in the receptacle or, if they are too
large, please just place them on the floor in front of the
box. Officers of the club regularly check the area for the
cartridges. We recycle the cartridges and use the monies
for the used cartridges for supplies for our computer room.
Our meetings are held in Lakeside Lodge and start at
10 am. We usually wrap up in an hour. Coffee and cake/
cookies are provided before and during the meeting for all
to enjoy. Why not come out, bring a friend and enjoy our
informative meetings?

about the best type of fishing tackle for use in our lake. May
we suggest light freshwater rods and reels seem to work best
and are the easiest to use. The reader further inquired about
which is the best form of tackle. Use whatever you’ve been
using, spin, bait casting or fly.
Ray Pickwoad is busy working with his committee to
plan the Kid’s Fishing Tournament for July. Donations and
suggestions are always welcome.

No one else in popular American music has recorded for
so long and at a high level of excellence as Tony Bennett. In the last ten years alone he has sold ten million records.
The essence of his longevity and high artistic
achievement was imbued in him in his loving childhood
home in the Astoria section of Queens where he was born
on August 3,1926.
His father died when Tony was ten and his mother
Anna raised him and his older brother and sister, John and
Mary. He attended the High School of Industrial Arts in
Manhattan where he continued nurturing his two passions,
singing and painting.
On the radio he developed a love of music - hearing
Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong and Jimmy Durante. As a
teenager Tony sang while waiting on tables and then enlisted
in the army during the second world war. While in Europe
he performed with military bands.
He later had vocal studies at the American Theater Wing
School. The first time Tony sang in a nightclub was in 1946

More than twenty years ago we met Tony at the Ocean
County Mall. He was greeting people at the mall while his
paintings were on display. My wife and I were awed by his
talent. What a thrill to meet such a great performer and at
the same time to see his artwork.
He has performed and cranked out hits during his sixty
year career. His duet albums with current artists is a tribute
to him and his style. He was a performer at the last Grammy
Awards show. He continues to amaze us and we just can’t
wait to see what he has in store for us in the future.

Hopefully, by the time everyone is reading this, we are
actually experiencing some Spring-like weather. I have had
enough snow and freezing temperatures to last me a lifetime
this past winter. The cruelest April Fools Joke I could think
of would be another snowstorm!
Easter is upon us, and it is time again to remember
what Jesus did for us. He died for our sins, rose from the
dead, and, in turn, gave us the opportunity of eternal life in
Heaven. God loved the world so much that he gave us his
one and only Son. Anyone who believes in him will not die
but will have eternal life.
Well, before I forget, let me remind you of our upcoming
events in April:
• Pride & Priest Dinner April 14th at Doolan’s Shore
House in Spring Lake.
• Flea Market at the PAC on the 18th. We will be
supplying the refreshments and of course helping
vendors bring in their products as usual.
• Applebee’s Pancake Breakfast April 25th 8-10 AM

• Finally, on the first weekend in May we will hold
our P.I.D. Drive for God’s special children chaired
by Dan Spina. Dan is looking for volunteers,
so please put aside an hour to help with this
worthwhile cause.
I would like to thank everyone that supported our Lou
Mattera Seminarian Fund. I hope that many of you had
a chance to attend our Founder’s Day Event where we
awarded scholarships to several Seminarians to help them
on their road to the Priesthood.
Our Baby Bottle Boom-A-Rang project was a huge
success. The funds we raised from the Baby Bottle program
goes to a number of different Right-to-Life Organizations
such as The Open Door, Birthright and Providence House.
I would like to congratulate John Torchen as being
selected Knight of the Month for March. At the present time,
he is holding down two positions on the board and is very
active with St. Johns Church while volunteering his time in
the community to help those less fortunate. John is a big guy
with a big heart always willing to give rather than receive.
Vinny Spera stepped down as Chancellor of the Council
because the Board Trustees felt it was a conflict of interest.
I am sure that he will continue to volunteer as he had in
the past and will always be a valuable asset to our Council.
Vinny is not only a Brother Knight but also a friend, and
if he serves the Board as well as he did our Council, only
good things are in store for the Community.
I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter and an
enjoyable Spring. Hope to see you all at the upcoming events
and please make an extra effort to attend our meetings on
the 2nd Thursday 7:00 PM at The Lakeside Lodge now that
winter is over. May God Bless You All.

Preventing Your Cat from Getting Outside
Cats kept exclusively indoors live longer, healthier
lives than outdoor cats. If you allow your cat to go outside,
he might come into contact with wild animals who carry
parasites and disease, as well as other outdoor cats who may
fight with him, greatly increasing his risk of getting feline
leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus
(FIV). Your cat might encounter predators, like dogs, foxes
and coyotes, who could seriously harm or even kill him.
He might be hit by a motor vehicle. He might be exposed
to poisonous substances like lawn chemicals, antifreeze
and rat bait.
Keeping your cat indoors is the best way to prolong
his life. Of course, cats don’t understand that they’re safer
staying indoors, and some cats will do everything in their
power to escape. This is especially true of indoor cats with
a history of going outside.
Your cat can learn to be happy indoors if you
provide him with an enriched environment and give him
opportunities to be by himself. However, if you have a cat
who keeps trying to escape, it’s vital to make sure he isn’t
successful! Cat-proofing your exits and deterring him from
hanging around the doors are essential management steps
for you to take.
Another need a cat has that can affect his welfare as
an indoor cat—and affect whether he attempts to escape
outside—is alone time. We recognize this need
in ourselves but don’t always consider it when
thinking of our pets. But cats actually have a
greater need for personal space and alone time
than people do—it’s their nature. To meet an
indoor cat’s social needs, you’ll want to provide
him enough space to be comfortable and enough
perching and hiding places to be alone. If you
have more than one cat, you should also have
multiple feeding areas, and at least one more
litter box than the total number of cats you
have. (In other words, if you have three cats,
you should have at minimum of four litter
boxes). The boxes should be in different areas
rather than lined up next to each other. Your cats
should also have enough high perches so that
one is always available to everyone. Perches
can be purchased as indoor cat “trees,” but they can also
easily be created by emptying spaces on book shelves and
window shelves.
Lastly, use a pheromone diffuser in an area or areas
where your cat frequents. Synthetic versions of cat
pheromones that are released when cats rub their faces
on things (like Feliway) can reduce your cat’s anxiety. If
possible, use the diffuser until your cat’s escape attempts
diminish.
Outdoor Excursions
Creating a Secure Outdoor Enclosure
A secure outdoor enclosure allows your cat access to
the exciting sights, sounds and smells outdoors, enlarging
his home territory. Enclosures for cats should be completely
enclosed, such as a screened-in porch, or constructed so the
cat can’t climb up the walls and jump out. Walls should
be at least seven feet high and should not be accessible
to trees or climbing vines. In addition, the top of the wall
should be capped with a fence ledge that angles toward the
interior at least one foot, as an added deterrent for jumping
and climbing cats.

Lakeside Lodge at 10am. I am sorry to say that we are not
doing well with the Spring Season. I had to cancel a trip to
see Dirty Dancing; in Philadelphia Pa.
We have three trips scheduled; they are all in the month

Center in Philadelphia Pa.
Sun. May 24th 4pm, Atlantic City Ballet performs

NJ an afternoon of Opera and Broadway show tunes, while
being served wine and dinner.
I’m suggesting May 5th can be April’s trip and May 31st
can be June’s trip. This would be discussed at our March
meeting and we can go from there.
At our March meeting I asked for a nominating
committee to elect officers for next year. For personal
reasons I will be stepping down in June and Joan Preus
has already retired as Vice President.
If the club is to continue, we need new people, with
new ideas to keep it going.

Spring will be here shortly and all the
snow will be gone. It is about time that we
can start to enjoy better weather. Let me begin
by informing everyone that our veterans social has been
successful. Let me explain what it’s all about. The social
is a gift bingo game that my wife, Janet has once a month.
We are limited to approximately 40 people. The entrance
fee is $15.00 and in addition you need to bring a gift of
$15.00 value. However, you must call Janet in advance at
732-408-7701. This is due to the fact that she is limited to
the number of participants. Gifts are exchanged and money
could be won. So please watch the calendar and make sure
you register with Janet. For more information keep an eye
out on the creeper. All those who attended the previous
social bingo had a great time. So please come down and
enjoy. Some of the proceeds go to the Veterans Club for
their honor guard needs and for gift prizes. Don’t forget
that we are limited to 40 people, so make sure you register
by calling Janet at 732-408-7701.
Next will be our Memorial Day ceremony that we
will be having on Monday, May 25, 2015. Our ceremony
will start at 11am sharp. All members must wear your club
shirts. We will be having our own color guard along with
the Lakehurst naval color guard. We will be remembering
our fallen brothers in Leisure Knoll and will continue this
tradition on every Memorial Day. Members who have
grandchildren 10 years old and under, make sure you invite
them as well, because we want them to sing the National
Anthem as a group for our community. Remember, we
expect a big turnout. We will also be honoring all the
veterans who died for our country. We also had a trip to
Fort Dix for a simulation class of what our ground troops
go through as part of their training. Please see attached
pictures for some of the activities that we participated in. A
special thanks to our teachers at the base and big thank you
to our 1st VP Lew Jones for making it happen. Another trip
is planned for the fall. Make sure you attend our meetings
for an update of upcoming events. We want to thank the
recent winners of our 50/50 drawing at our last meeting,
Lew Jones and Jim Walker who donated their winning to
the honor guard fund.

NATURAL HIGH

It was the time before Disco, the Reagans, and glitz of
the next decade. We, with our “long beautiful hair”, sat with
friends listening to John Denver and the Doobie Brothers
and Roberta Flack. Our children were almost ready for
school; still creating funny little animals with Play-Doh,
and bouncing on their Hoppity-Hops. As a young mother,
I was trying my best to be as “natural” as possible in every
respect. No hair dye, no perfume, no underwires for me.
Hair spray was tossed out, and polyester was a no-no. Earth
Shoes were IN, and heels were OUT. People everywhere
were learning how to curb their use of water, electricity,
and gasoline. Conserve, Conserve, was the new motto. I
jumped on this bandwagon with gusto… determined to save
the planet. Only canvas bags for food shopping, and not
one scrap of paper went into the garbage. We used cloth
napkins only. Recycling was embraced, knowing this would
be a terrific way for my family to become environmentally
conscious. I couldn’t wait for “Earth Day”, and when
it finally arrived, we planted whatever perennial would
grow all the while embracing the dirt gathering under our
fingernails.
It was then that I decided to become Mother Earth in
my little corner of the world and teach my children how to
live more natural and down-to-earth lives. The dye was cast
(so to speak). Only unbleached flour in my kitchen. I even
struggled to make my own applesauce and granola bars;
hard work, but I persevered. Cholesterol was a brand-new
word in our vocabulary, and although I wasn’t sure exactly
what it meant, I knew one thing – no more bacon and eggs.
But, not to worry, we had wonderful substitutes…turkey
bacon and an exciting new product we called “Almost
Eggs” which poured right out of a neat little container, no
eggshells in sight! Encouraging young kids (and husbands)
to eat natural foods wasn’t easy, but I just knew that I could
sweet-talk them to get used to a different albeit somewhat
bland taste. After all, they would thank me in the future for
keeping them healthy and strong…right? Right.
Then Spring arrived, and it was time for Easter Baskets.
Was I ruffled or apprehensive? No! I simply marched
myself to the Health Food Store, and there in front of me
was a plethora of wonderful stuff – and it was all natural!
Gathering the goodies (in my canvas bag) was fun. It took
awhile, but I managed to substitute nearly everything one
would find in a “regular” Easter Basket, with all-natural

at hand feeling quite accomplished and very hip. The cost
was a bit excessive, but I convinced myself that it was
well worth it since I was protecting my kids’ stomachs and
arteries and colons.

time. But then something happened. Their questions came
non-stop: “Where were the real jellybeans, and what’s this
soy stuff?” “What happened to the big bunny?” “What is
carob anyway? It doesn’t taste anything like chocolate!
Where were the cream-filled eggs, and why are these hard,
sawdust granola bars in their place?” And…horrors of
all horrors…where in heaven’s name, were the PEEPS!
These kids would be neither convinced nor cajoled. The
Easter Bunny had failed them and I was at fault. It was the
beginning of the end.
As the months rolled by, I grew tired of the “Mother
Earth” routine. The fact is that cotton has to be ironed, plus
making applesauce from scratch resulted in tennis elbow.
One needed muscles to be natural, and in my case they
weren’t easy to come by. Bran-filled granola bars tasted like
sticks from the back yard, and turkey bacon was just plain
boring. Only one member of the family didn’t care - the
dog. Ah yes, I soon faced the fact that there’s no such thing
as a substitute for delicious, mouth-watering chocolate.
(Confession: I’d been hiding those little marshmallow
peeps in my night table drawer all along.) Finally, I had
to admit that:
A. Earth Shoes were not comfortable.
B. Underwires can be very uplifting.
C. Blondes have more fun.

Sudoku
Sudoku requires no calculation or arithmetic skills. It is essentially a game of placing numbers in
squares, using very simple rules of logic and deduction.
The objective of the game is to fill all the blank squares in a game with the correct numbers. There
are three very simple constraints to follow. In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game:
• Every row of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order
• Every column of 9 numbers must include all digits 1 through 9 in any order
• Every 3 by 3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all digits 1 through 9
Every Sudoku games begins with a number of squares already filled in, and the difficulty of each
game is largely a function of how many squares are filled in. The more squares that are known,
the easier it is to figure out which numbers go in the open squares. As you fill in squares correctly,
options for the remaining squares are narrowed and it becomes easier to fill them in.
